Match Thread Coventry City vs Sunderland (H) - Coventry Building Society Arena - Sat 31st October (3pm KO) (1 Viewer)

Wolfenden is one of our championship players and is injured, and I class Hamer as a championship player given he last played in the premier league 3 seasons ago.

I'd be tempted to play Yirenkyi right back, it's where he plays most for Ghana and Milan is struggling, I would have Gboho in over EMC, and as talented as Cherif is and Awoniyi has been poor, I'd have Awoniyi in there. At least then you have a Pinnock, Onyeka and Awoniyi spine that has decent PL experience. That would give you 6 players from the championship. You could throw in Tchaouna for Sakamoto, but that would feel harsh as he played well Saturday, but we need PL quality on the ball.

Injuries to Thomas and Amenda have fucked us, as we have to go with a back 4, otherwise it's Lati. It's a moot point anyway as Frank will play his favourites.
Yeah I could go with Yirenki at RB, he played well there when he was asked and MVE has been off it so far.
Gboho over EMC, yeah could give him a run out, haven't seen enough of him to judge, I put EMC in because although he hasnt played well when hes started games his last two cameos as sub have been promising.
Awoniyi in, started the season well but he's found himself out of the team because of his own ill discipline. Could start him but I'd make him work a bit harder to get back in and Cherif has done all right for me so far considering the service he's been getting.
Tchaouna for Sakamoto would be harh, he's played well since he's come in (defensively as well).
LAti, I think we can all agree on that one...

Name something BTA has done to deserve a starting place?
Constant harrying and harassing of Nottingham Forest defence, coupled with being part of a very fluid front three, played a huge part in our victory at Nottingham Forest. That was by far our best overall performance this season.

He also caused Newcastle a lot of problems, and was one of the better players against Spurs.

He's limited, but he's been one of our better performers so far.

He is a frustrating player, if he just has a slightly better first and second touch and a little more heads up when on the ball, he could be a real threat. He does bring energy, has a shot on him. Statistically he has two assists this season and he was unlucky when he hit the post v spurs so could have had a goal. He's far from perfect though so I can see why for some people he's a no. Who would you replace him with?

*Meant in response to original question 'Name something BTA has done to deserve a starting place?' from coop.

I would start Simms and give him a run of games, with Cherif the first sub and fuck Awonyi back off to Forest!!!! £9m on a bloke who can't run, can't head the ball and never seems to have any control of it or himself!! They really had our pants down there.

So you didn't watch the games before he sent off when he was really good at all those things?

He played against Hull, didn't score.
Played against Plymouth, scored but missed an absolute sitter from 2 yards with his head.
Played against Man City, missed a 1 on 1, didn't even hit the target.
Played 50 minutes against Brighton before stupidly getting sent off.

So, we can debate whether he was good in those games before he got sent off.

So. in Robbie's post where does he mention scoring?

Maybe you should read the post before you jump in.

Better luck next time.

Massive game on Saturday, need to have a bit of bollocks about us and get at them. No reason why we can't get a win.

Rushworth
Milan Thomas (if fit) Pinnock Mfuni
Onyeka Yirenkyi
Saka Rudoni Gboho
Cherif

I watch Sunderland the other night and they are very poor. If we can't beat them at home then we have problems. Time for onr or two changes which must include an extra creative man in midfield adding support for Rudoni.

We’ve made this even more of a high pressure, massive game than it already was.

FL can offset that a little - more so in the crowds - with a positive team selection.

Won’t happen but I’d go;

Rushworth
KKH Pinnock Mfuni JDS
Yirenyki Torp
Sakamoto Rudoni Gboho
Cherif (albeit tempted by Simms)

Two changes in defence isn’t great but MVE needs a break.
Torp not ideal against a physical team but I expect us to see more of a ball and I want some creativity in the middle.
Sakamoto was good last game and realistically he isn’t bringing LT in from the cold to start.
Cherif started brightly but faded massively last game - and it’s a lot of pressure on him - but FL won’t start Simms and I don’t want to see an unfit Awonyi.

We were crap the other night but so were Leeds, I wouldn’t look too much into that game, it was totally ruined by the storm.

Both teams see this as a must win. A draw is not good enough for either side.

Mve was fine against Fulham. Playing a central midfielder out of position at right back when right back is not a problem area is a very strange move.

I worry about our ability to keep the ball with a Yerenkyi and Onyeka midfield but it’s worth a go I believe.

I’d like the 2 new wingers to start. Similar to Cherif, if they aren’t good enough then we are in trouble. We already know the current wingers aren’t. Shame to lose Thomas as it would’ve been the right time to bring Mfuni in for Dasilva too.

Rushworth
MVE Thomas Pinnock Mfuni
Onyeka Yerenkyi
Tchouana Rudi Gboho
Cherif

What I'd give for Lampard just to put that team out, honestly. Just let them play together.

I’m the same but we aren’t keeping the ball with Grimes in there so it’s worth a shot

We are all just hoping these new lads are better than what we have. If it doesn’t work, then Lampard would be vindicated and attention would turn to our poor recruitment.

I dont think we should concern ourselves with trying to keep the ball in midfield, I think we should concentrate on making life as difficult as possible for the opposition when they're in possesion, and getting it to our more attack minded players ASAP once we've won it back.
My main concern is which of these more atrack minded players currently looks like they can get hold of the ball and make something happen?

But I agree, Id definitely give Onyeka and Yirenkyi a go.

There is no way they are worse, I just cant see it. We need to get these players on the pitch and let them form some sort of understanding. And in CM an Onyeka type would offer so much more than Grimes as Grimes simply can't Grimes at this level.

didn't realise it had to be made so obvious, but hell, he DIDN'T score either!!!!
yeah and playing up front is not all about scoring, how many goals did Brobby score for Sunderland last season? Was he a bad signing?

Robbie, i'll buy you a clue for xmas mate

That 11, if nothing else, has size, pace and physical attributes throughout

Yeah the wingers haven’t covered themselves in glory but at least they should both have more pace than EMC/BTA/Sakamoto and that should help our sit deep game plan (as would a more agricultural CM)

Forget all your permutations of what you'd do, what do you think the team will be? Need to get over the Grimes thing, he's starting, Frank likes him, so for now we get behind him as I'm pretty sure the negativity isn't helping.

My biggest worry is whether Bobby is fit or not.

I think it’ll be same again injuries allowing.

If he’s checking Sky Blues Talk and bothered that someone called a Warthog isn’t picking him then we really are fucked!

The team will be mostly the same with Mfuni, Awoniyi and potentially a different winger.

You can't keep giving away possession in this league as you get punished and unfortunately Onyeka gives the ball away all the time . We heard this from Brentford fans when he was signed that he's great running around hassling players but he can't pass to a team mate

He looked fuming on Saturday didn’t he? I think there’ll be changes.

Hope so I’m just not sure. Cherif BTA Grimes Rudi seem undroppable. The back line seems settled. Maybe Saka for a RW. Maybe a Yirenkyi for Onyeka but again I can see why he’d stick with those. All depends on training this week I guess. I’m hoping the wingers and a CM can give him something to think about.

Don’t think Cherif and BTA are unstoppable at all? I expect Awoniyi will get a start soon enough. And I assume BTA is only playing because of whatever is going on which the frenchies

We will not be able to dominate possesion in this league and we shouldn't try.
We should be winning the ball back and getting it to our forwards ASAP, in the majority of games we havent been putting enough pressure on the opposition in possession.

And to say Onyeka can't pass to a team mate is hyperbole, last game I looked he had 77% completion rate, which isnt great, but its not as bad as people are making out.

What I think it will be (not what I want it to be)

Rushworth
MVE
Thomas*
Pinnock
Dasilva
Grimes
Onyeka
BTA
Rudi
EMC
Awoniyi

*if fit, of course.
