Despite working as a web developer I'm still having to go in to the office every day, 2 people have started coughing regularly now we're having to wear masks when we walk around the office. I'm only really putting it on here to get a bit of frustration out. We could all easily work from home. Fucking nuts.

I couldn’t, but a lot probably could

Why are they summoning you in? Especially with new directives.

The coughers need a test and to go home if it's dry! Although I've had a bit of a cough for... a month? and it ain't Covid, but I guess might worry a stranger if I was in an office with them...

My place is treating the guidance as “guidance” and saying they can still have people in because they’re COVID safe (they’re not). Luckily we haven’t started bringing people back from last time so not much different. But now I’m living with my Dad who is vulnerable I’m very edgy about being asked to go back in right now.

Yeah, Mrs Wisdom will still have to go in, I suspect, because of the guidance rule.

It's a bit silly really, that she's compelled to go in. her job does need some on-site work, but I'd have thought the sensible compromise is reserve those days for her to go in, if she needs to, rather than drag her in for no reason at all.

Being on the dark side of things, I suspect it won't be too long before she's compelled not to go in my government, anyway...

Err....how come I can go the pub with 5 other mates from 5 other households here in Liverpool but the geordies cannot?

Just trying to get my head around whether the tories are just trying to kill more scousers or whether they're geordie baiting?

No rhyme. No reason. No fucking idea.

That 0.4% is around 1.3 million people in the US.

260k people in the UK.

24 million people globally.

it’s an astronomical amount of people who would die and as someone else has pointed out, that’s assuming the healthcare systems don’t get overwhelmed.

And why? Because people can’t wear a mask and watch more Netflix?

We have skype, FaceTime, free international calls Via WhatsApp or Viber, iPads, group messages, pretty much unlimited video content, games consoles, live sports, food delivery services at the touch of a button. Our lives are literally better than 99% of literally everybody who has ever fucking lived on this planet to date and we complain and struggle to make small sacrifices for 1/80th of our lives so that we can move on and beat this shit.

It drives me fucking mad
To be fair BSB isn't saying he's not going to wear a mask and watch more Netflix.

I don't think piling on at someone who is having mental health issues related to the unending shitness of it all is a good look either tbh.

To be fair I think his post is nothing to with anyone's mental health. BSB asked the what the justification for the restrictions on a virus that may have a 0.40% mortality rate and RK was extrapolating the figures based on that.

Looked at the map for the first time in a while: ArcGIS Web Application

Are there specific differences between what Cov and Warwick Uni have done on the return? In the map above, a big hotspot in Cov is Canon Park & University. Yet around central Coventry and east of the city centre, no particular evidence of a student related surge.

Not sure if it's still true now but read a council report on student accommodation a few years back that said Warwick Uni students were more likely to be in halls and close to the uni where Cov Uni students were spread around the city in private accommodation.

Sounds about right. Always been the case that Warwick faces Warwickshire more than Cov, so the students socialise in Cov less as well IIRC.

Looking at that map you can see how universities are really driving some of the high figures we are seeing.

Looked at Manchester and the real hot spots are the Oxford Road strip and Fallowfield.

It's not really like that anymore, the Cov Uni students now largely inhabit the many newly build student halls in the city centre where as the Warwich students have started to move in to places like Canley etc.

Yeah, was gonna mention Manc as being up here I thought that might be hotspot, it's pretty stark.

You clearly spend most of your time sniffing round these places by the sound of it.

RK was being a bit of a cock imo, assuming that people are bitching because they have to wear a mask when they can binge watch Netflix. I asked the question because the restrictions have made my job more stressful than usual (read: unworkable) but have also removed things I could do out of it. That’s how it’s been for a lot of others but especially teachers so to write it off in churlish fashion is a bit out of order.

I wasn't piling on at anyone for mental health issues at all - I was responding to BSB's 0.4% number where the implication was that this is an insignificant number and so therefore why are we having these restrictions. It's also not about whether the under 20s are going to get sick from it, it's about their parents and their grandparents or other people they pass it on to.

Usually enjoy your posts and agree with a lot of what you say but not really sure why you've came at me there...

No one is saying you guys in the teaching profession have it easy and none of use in society as a whole are having it easy but I don't think anyone was piling on. A statistic was mention and that was then expanded on.

The current restrictions are needed and I think there is a chance that we may have needed to go harder with them. I think the issues with teaching and schools are a different issue to the restrictions. The government fannied about so much instead of putting in plans to properly reopen schools.

Lot's of people are bitching about wearing masks, and lots of people are also complaining about a lot of the other restrictions and "new normal" conditions that are going to be around until we have a vaccine. One look at twitter or instagram and everyone is complaining about civil liberties and asking "how long are we going to go on living like this for it's ridiculous". Simple...until there's a vaccine.

Sorry if you think I was being a bit of a cock, but I stand by everything I say. The reason you can't go back to teaching the way it used to be is because these kids could go home and pass this virus onto other people, their families, grandparents, etc. People are still contagious when they are assymptomatic. I assume being an experienced teacher you are not in the super low risk category you describe either. These kids could give it to yourself. No doubt it's tough and I feel for you, but to swipe it away as 0.4% death rate is dangerous IMO and gives excuses to idiots who choose to dismiss this pandemic because it doesn't suit the privileged lifestyle they have become accustomed to.
