I thought I'd make a thread about ways we might be able to make or save a bit of money. It's tough out there at the moment, and there are quite a few small wins that can bring in some extra cash for very little time or effort.
I signed up to Sprive a month or so ago. It's basically a cashback app where the cashback you earn is paid straight off your mortgage. Between me and my wife, we've managed to knock about £40 off ours in the last five weeks, which should also save roughly another £28 in interest over the remaining mortgage term. That's literally just from buying a gift card through the app when we're about to do a Tesco shop, rather than paying on our debit card. Nothing more complicated than that. At the rate we've earned it so far, that's equivalent to roughly £400 a year being knocked off the mortgage, plus ~£300 in interest that those overpayments save over time. £700 of benefit from a year's worth of cashback isn't bad for effectively doing nothing differently!
I'm totally addicted to it now - Amazon, Tesco, Asda, Currys, they all have gift cards for it, and it's just shopping I'd normally do which will end up knocking a few months off my mortgage. If anyone wants to try it, my referral code is X2U1FL3K - you'll get boosted cashback for a week if you use it.
And that got me thinking about all the other little financial wins that are out there, because individually they don't sound like much, but they soon add up. Things like creating a 'sacrificial' current account that you can use to pick up the bank-switching bonuses out there without moving your actual day-to-day account (£200 is on offer at some places atm). I've also done radio research before. I got a tenner just for keeping a record of which radio stations I listened to for a week, which was basically talksport and CWR. Last year I also got £100 from the ONS for doing four 20-minute phone surveys spread across the year (they sent a letter out asking for people to do it for £25, and I replied and they signed me up for the year, so £25 for each of the four surveys).
I guess I'm not really talking about cutting back, or cancelling the things you enjoy, or spending hours chasing after pennies. It's more about those little bits of 'free money' that are available for minimal effort if you know where to look.
Does anybody have any other small wins like these? Things that don't take much time or effort, but can add up to a decent amount over the year?
