Match Thread Coventry City vs Fulham (H) - Coventry Building Society Arena - Sat 24th October (3pm KO) (2 Viewers)

After calming down from last night that was one of those games if you draw 0-0 it is seen as a decent point

But if you play the way we played and you lose you should rightfully expect severe criticism because we didn’t even try and have a go

Like @Evo1883 said it was like we were scared

The ultimate playing with a wimper
What is really unforgivable is the way we failed to react after going a goal down.
It was embarrassing.
There's no fight or passion in this team

I didn't actually notice at the time as I was too depressed but why the actually fuck is Dasilva not helping Rudoni (an AM) engage a tricky player like Bobb. Suicidally shit that is.

Think he was originally trying to block/cut out angle of a pass to one of their players but agree, poor, should never have happened and we were punished but a great goal

It’s an unforgiving league

Ps probably a Bobby Thomas special off the line if he’s still on the pitch though

People need to see the goal again, obviously. More tragic defending by Dasilva who’s still living off his goal. He ends up behind Oscar Bobb. Awful.
If it was da Silva who got turned inside out by bobb there is no way you would be focusing on the guy behind him lol

Why the hell does he actively move behind him!!??
Yeh really bizarre defensive movement. No instinct on where the danger was at all. Almost the opposite in fact, I think a Sunday leaguer would anticipate it better than that.

There's an argument for Mfuni to go there to get more quality in the 11, although Thomas and Amenda being injured probably puts an end to that unless we want Lati at CB 😐

Am i alone in wondering why we play with 2 wingers and one CF? Even on the rare occasion when we get a cross in, we are out numbered and it comes to nothing when on the attack unless its a set piece where the CBs go up. Surely 2 up front is worth a go?
I think Rudoni in those situations is supposed to become the second striker. We've seen him ghosting into the area to score headers in the past.

Thanks for posting that, very interesting. In fairness I'd probably guess he was playing left wing from looking at that, albeit it's notable how few times he is getting beyond about 22 yards out and essentially never getting to the bye-line in a wide position.

What app was that from please as would be interested in taking a look at some of the other players to see what that shows.

Edited to add just saw a stat that BTA only had 18 touches. That’s a lot of running about for so few touches. Symptomatic of how we get consistently overrun in the middle of the park and struggle to link defence to attack.

Was Rushworths position questionable too. Hugging his near post. With acres of space on the right hand side.

Feel a bit for JDS really.

I also didn’t notice his poor reaction / positioning for the goal and it’s fair to call that out.

But how we’ve ended up with our LB as our main outlet is a bit odd. Especially as most of the times he got the ball there wasn’t a LW in front of him, the inside pass wasn’t always on - predominantly as Grimes / Yirenyki are positionally all over the place - and Rudoni was often is only option.

We know he’s technically one of our better players and it worked last year, but I felt he was over utilised yesterday and often isolated.

I have done thanks. Super interesting and hope the club analysts take a good look at this stuff, pretty certain they do. No great surprise we get over-run through midfield as it’s clear how much focus goes on width. Remarkably little central activity shown in the middle of the pitch. Grimes covers defensive half then spends most of his time in the centre circle, Yirenkyi covers both ends of the right side and it looks like if you overlay all the heat maps, there is very little activity in the opposing half on the left side of the pitch but away from the bye line. Onyeka sits deeper than Yirenkyi.

Awoniyi plays further up the pitch than Cherif and Rudi spends most time wide, often switching sides.

Would be interesting to see what a professional football analyst would make of it - as someone used to analysing data in other areas, it looks like we’ve got to put more focus on getting players to join in more in central positions in the opposing half otherwise it’s inevitable our sole CF will continue to be isolated and we have zero chance successfully pressing as the ball will just keep coming back quickly through breaks straight down the middle.

I know Lamps likes his width, but given our central defence is decent at defending crosses, I’d be inclined to try playing a bit narrower and trying to get more bodies forward in central areas . It was notable how well both Sunderland and Leeds did that today, it was like a basketball match at times!

One thing I noticed yesterday from the MOTD highlights was one of the chances they created. A CB has the ball and literally passes it straight down the middle of the pitch and bypasses our entire midfield. No need for creating fancy angles or runs to pull players out of positions. Just literally passing it in a straight line down the centre of the pitch where our midfielders had left a gaping hole.
