The problem with a points deduction next season is if they get promoted they won't be under the jurisdiction of the EFL. Their get out clause would be to give them less than 8 points this season. It would still be the same ties for the playoffs.

anything more than 6 points this season would be ridiculous anyway

That would be a way out for the EFL, dock them points now, not enough to take them out of the playoffs but it would send a message to other clubs that a points deduction is likely for a similar offence
