For how much tho?Fine them and move on
If They win the tie, the Wembley tickets alone would cover it and then some.

they aren’t winning the tie based on what they’ve seen in training ffsFor how much tho?

There are still some Derby fans who blame Boro/Gibson for them going into administration and getting relegated. Obviously, their overspending and attempts to cover it up were nothing to do with it.There is some real needle as well, when I was living up there Derby played at The Riverside in the height of Gibson pursuing them in the courts and there was some real bother before and after the game in the town centre
Derby fucked about and found out, they loved Mel Morris when they were getting in the play-offs every season yet only started to call out their shady dealings when the money dried up and the net closed in, same with Chansiri at Sheff W to an extentThere are still some Derby fans who blame Boro/Gibson for them going into administration and getting relegated. Yeah no chanceI think you’re right…but it surely won’t happen?
Saying about Swindon, weren’t they denied promotion after winning the play offs in the early 90s for something?Personally would argue Swindon this year in the cup.
But what do you think should be done to at least even the playing field after one side has broken EFL rules?
The problem for the EFL is if they don't do enough they will be open to litigation from Middlesbrough and if they do litigation from Southampton. If the game goes ahead today there would be too much money at stake to cancel the return game. Supporters have paid for travel and maybe making a weekend of it.I suspect EFL are hoping Boro beat Saints over 2 legs, otherwise this is going to cause a huge problem for the league.
No, I would say it would have been better to have someone like Columbo in the bushes. If it was Clouseau, he would have forgot to take the lens cap off the camera and there would be no evidence.Depending on how long it takes to prove (if they have done this to many clubs in the run of 19 games or whatever it is unbeaten) could that mean the teams they beat be rewarded with 3 points? Could that mean we get an extra 3 points? They beat us at the CBS and probably had Inspector Clouseau in the Ryton bushes
Then went home after and attacked by Cato because Clouseau needs to be kept on his toes at all timesNo, I would say it would have been better to have someone like Columbo in the bushes. If it was Clouseau, he would have forgot to take the lens cap off the camera and there would be no evidence.
We will see. It's a new rule that hasn't been tested. To me it should have the same consequences at least. Kicked out of the playoffs and also a big fine.Fielding ineligible players is a much bigger offense
I'd award the game (not the tie) 3-0 to Middlesbrough; this can even be done retrospectively, as it's being played today. Game forfeit, essentially.Interesting to see how the EFL deal with this.
Well if it’s an EFL rule there will be an already prescribed sanction.I'd award the game (not the tie) 3-0 to Middlesbrough; this can even be done retrospectively, as it's being played today. Game forfeit, essentially.
Then, if further wrong-doing comes to light, that can be dealt with further down the line, with demotion if appropriate.
Long bans for any in the Southampton management team implicated.
This has to be dealt with very seriously, as others have said, it challenges the integrity of the competition.
Fielding an ineligible player, more often than not is an administration error - yet is usually always met with a points, walkover (3-0) or expulsion penalty.Fielding ineligible players is a much bigger offense
They aren’t going to kick southampton out. This is their big pay pig. i could see a points deduction next year maybeFielding an ineligible player, more often than not is an administration error - yet is usually always met with a points or expulsion penalty.
In the case of Swindon this year, pretty sure theur incorrect team sheet had no bearing on the result, but they were still booted out.
Let's see the balls of the EFL .. .. (knowing full well they'll be ovaries though!)
If they go up via the playoffs can the efl sanction a points deduction in the prem? They aren’t going to kick southampton out. This is their big pay pig. i could see a points deduction next year maybe
No. This was the Leicester issue....If they go up via the playoffs can the efl sanction a points deduction in the prem?
There's a potential issue that if Saints get promoted then the EFL wouldn't be able to give them a points deduction next year. They aren’t going to kick southampton out. This is their big pay pig. i could see a points deduction next year maybe
A fine isn't remotely adequate. Even if it's a huge amount, do you still then allow the offender to benefit from promotion to the most lucrative league in the world?Fine them and move on
yes but anyone suggesting the game is void is gonna be disappointedThere's a potential issue that if Saints get promoted then the EFL wouldn't be able to give them a points deduction next year.
I personally think they'll wing it until the outcome of the playoffs is clearer.
ok so you think the match will be void?A fine isn't remotely adequate. Even if it's a huge amount, do you still then allow the offender to benefit from promotion to the most lucrative league in the world?
It's impossible to quantify any advantage gained on the field of play from the spying activities. It could be minimal, or it could be decisive. It doesn't matter - the nature of the offence is that it's deliberately scheming to break the rules with complete disregard for your sporting opponents. You shouldn't be able to buy your way out of it - there has to be a sporting punishment.
Agreed. Its impossible to prove how much of an advantage it actually was to be able to start working out permutations. Fine and a ticking off most likelyyes but anyone suggesting the game is void is gonna be disappointed
it really wouldn’t surprise me to see just a fine
Well it's already compromised. The EFL will have a wide range of possible sanctions and I hope they don't chicken out. Isn't there an independent panel involved?ok so you think the match will be void?
do you think the result will be void?Well it's already compromised. The EFL will have a wide range of possible sanctions and I hope they don't chicken out. Isn't there an indeoendent panel involved?
FFS I don't bloody know do I?do you think the result will be void?
lol so pooing my comments with no clue yourselfFFS I don't bloody know do I?
I agree. Some posters are saying they wouldn't have gained much advantage, but that's irrelevant. It's cheating and breaking very specific rules of the game. If proven, a fine alone would be ridiculous. We will see. It's a new rule that hasn't been tested. To me it should have the same consequences at least. Kicked out of the playoffs and also a big fine.
It's downright cheating with no defence.
The rule is you can spy all you want up to 72 hours before a match. Its not really a hardline stance on it. Therefore i dont think the punishment will be either.I agree. Got to wonder how much they exploited the "performance analyst" lad who they got to do the dirty work. I know that some clubs get away with paying peanuts to these types of employees, and I hope the buck stops with the real decision maker(s).Yeah first test of the rule created after Leeds .. if it’s a fine then it’s just maths for clubs… cheat, get fined, get promoted, £200m in our pocket… so is no real deterrent, is actually an invitation for more clubs to try .. ultimately it’s the managers responsibility and the ban should start there, unless he assumed analytics department employed mystic Meg!
The problem with a points deduction next season is if they get promoted they won't be under the jurisdiction of the EFL. Their get out clause would be to give them less than 8 points this season. It would still be the same ties for the playoffs. They aren’t going to kick southampton out. This is their big pay pig. i could see a points deduction next year maybe
anything more than 6 points this season would be ridiculous anywayThe problem with a points deduction next season is if they get promoted they won't be under the jurisdiction of the EFL.
