Am I the only one?

It was probably a fix we got Arsenal
Away !! But look what happened to others Villa got smashed - Spurs got well beaten - Man Utd lost

Teams has to gel we have seen this before - new players haven’t a clue how the others in their team play - will take time

Pundits have to support the big six or they will be off the air - they are paid to make statements about the top six and create interest for the plastic fans who watch the tv

Breathe in !!! Still pinching myself

There's a lot of points being missed by a lot of people.

Those of us old enough to remember the top flight days remember it well. It's a lot more fun winning games in the Championship than wondering where your next points are coming from in the Prem.

Here we go. Reality has hit home and it isn't fun. I would love us to stay up, but if we fail we go back to the Championship and enjoy winning games again

It isn’t a lot more fun at all. I wouldn’t have swamped one season in the championship for the top flight football I saw for 28 years

Yeah it’ll probably be a glum season, and the Championship is a great league.

10/10 times though I’d rather be a PL club, despite my thought on it not being half as fun as it used to be as a league.

I have said for the last few seasons that I wasn't overly bothered by us getting to the premiere league but if we don't then what are we striving for?
Now that we are here I want us to do well but the league itself, the plastic fans, the corruption, the dogy financials, the fireworks and bollocks before the games, sky's bullshit. Not really my thing.
I want us to win every game but the premiere league as a package doesn't appeal to me.
Saw a twitter post by a wolves fan this morning who'd come to a similar realisation after 8 years in the top flight.

In the last couple of seasons in the Prem (2000-ish) there were a lot of us thinking that the endless relegation battles would be replaced by us being an established Prem team in the Champ and we'd win more often than not and piss the league, getting back at the first or second attempt, and enjoying winning for once. Clearly didn't happen like that! Rinse and repeat after relegation to League One.
I'm really happy to be back in the Prem, and will not be judging our season on last Friday's result. Arsenal in the Charity Shield and against us play some of the best free-flowing football i have ever seen and were a real antidote to the dull continental offering served up in the World Cup.
As others have said elsewhere, it is the likes of Hull, Brighton, Forest, Palace and Fulham that we need to be beating to ensure our survival, and i can't wait to see that happen.

So here goes, I'm probably going to be shot down but I need to write this down, even if it is to make sense of it myself.

I'm just not feeling it this season. I have had the feeling well before the season started and I'm sitting here tonight feeling nostalgic for the Championship already. I guess some of it is fear of an awful season but this 9 year rise has been on has been a proper rollercoaster but there is just something more authentic about Championship, League 1 & 2.

This just feels sterlile, players arriving that we know are only here for the club to profit from and for them to step up to the next level. I don't want us to be Burnley and be stuck in a perpetual yo-yo and i don't fancy losing more than winning (had enough of that in the 1980s & 90s). For me the Championship I always felt we could beat anyone on their day and last season we virtually did. I just wanted Friday night out of the way (and it looked like the players did as well) and I have never felt like that about any City game.

Even watching the coverage on Sky on Friday, Wright, Neville and Carragher had and have no interest in our rise back or fortunes this season. It all seemed so soulless. Teams like us are flies in their gravy train of closed shop teams. I guess a bit of this is now being a little fish in a very large pond.

We will probably win a couple of home games and this feeling will go away but it's strange.
I don’t think supporting a club is really for you.

Unbelievable

Truth is, I have completely ignored the PL for years now, so in all honesty I need to get used to it all again. The gap between top teams and others since we last played in these league is now immense, all the talk(sport) is about the top 6 ( of which 2 teams sit in the bottom 3) and far less discussed about other teams, so that says enough.

However for us, It’s new so will take some getting used to, but can we just calm down, let matters settle and start to enjoy the ride, get behind the lads and keep the faith!

I don’t think supporting a club is really for you.

To be fair I think he put his points across well enough. We’ve already seen plenty of hysteria on here after one defeat

I remember the premier League days and wins in the top league simply means more.

Winning the league 2 playoffs, league 1 and championship were all amazing but it always felt like we were catching back up to where we should be.

Every week I checked that table last year it was more about omg we are nearly back rather than woooh what an amazing feeling of winning games.

We need to survive in prem. Then look to stabilise then Look to grow. It's about moving forwards not going backwards again to get wins that will feel a little cheap. If we go down I'll enjoy getting promoted again but it will be more about getting back on track than it will be enjoyment of beating a Portsmouth or a Bristol.

It's like a game called god of war. I played that mofo on hard difficulty all the way to the end when I met the final boss and could not beat him. I lowered the difficulty and completed the game. It felt hollow and not satisfying. That's what being in the lower leagues is like for me..

I’m just shocked that these pundits who get paid so much to cover one league have such a poor knowledge of half of the teams. They have one job!
This has been the most amazing thing to me. So many people in the industry who’s sole job is to be knowledgeable about the league - and they seem to have done no research on the 3 promoted sides.

To be fair, half of our fans can't spell the names of our players correctly (and I'm not even including Chewamani in that)

I know exactly where your coming from. We were the big fish in an average sized pond last year and played with the confidence of being top of the pile. now we are the new boys whos only aspiration is to stay up. We have become drunk with success recently and its very addictive, the realization that all we have now is a battle for survival and adopting a completely different style of play is depressing.

The fact is winning games of football is more fun than losing, so I can kind of see where you're coming from with some of what you say.

But I am very excited for the season and spending £120m is absolutely nuts and totally surreal in an exciting way, as is the chance to test ourselves against the very best and hopefully pick up some memorable wins along the way.

One thing I do slightly struggle with though and can't quite get my head around: Obviously the aim is to establish ourselves in the PL long term. Let's say we manage that... Then what? Like is being a Fulham fan enjoyable? Is it fun to finish 10th-13th every season? Genuinely no idea!
Back when we got relegated from the Prem, although it was massively disappointing my brother and I had been excited by the opportunity to become a yo-yo team. Thought we’d walk promotion back.

My reflection is we just enjoy having a club. One with its own ground. If we stay in the prem we get to see some of the best players in the world - or alternatively we have fun back at the top end of the Champ.

I literally watched the game, went to bed and been in Wales at the weekend so no time for the socials. It was tough, but now way... this is what we came for!

It was a realisation how tough its going to be, we did look way off the level hoofing the ball forwards, 2nd to every ball. The other teams winning was exactly what we didn't want either.

But we did grow into the game and 2nd half played a bit of football. Frank could have told them to the cows come home about what is needed, but nothing brings it home like seeing it for yourself.

I'm glad we did what we did against Arsenal, if that had been Sunderland away it would have been more worrying. Its a long season, we were always going to lose that. But now its a case of how do we bounce back.

Always thought there was a gap in the market for a quality pundit, who had all round knowledge. Neville etc are just above average, but some of these they get to speak on talksport and SSN are pathetic. You’d be better off getting fan podcasts on.

The thing I noticed over the weekend is the lack of VAR interventions. If that is a sign of a new interpretation of how it is to be used then the PL will be a more attractive proposition for me.

Ffs
One game, against the best team in the league, possibly the world...
And we lost 3-0 in what is EASILY our hardest game this entire season.

Personally I'm still buzzing to be back in the Premier League, and already can't wait for the next game.

If we have a season like Burnley though where we don't win after October, I'm guessing that could take the shine off...

I kind of see where the OG poster is coming from-the top division now is very different beast from the 1970’s & 80’s 1st Division and even the early Prem days of the 90’s/00’s.

We might have been a Yo-Yo team had we had parachute payments.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed travelling to see their club play in the wild away ends of Accrington, Port Vale and Fleetwood.

I have the very same enthusiasm for the away trips to Everton, Man City and Spurs.

Unlike most supporters on here for most of my life we’ve been in the top division. I think it’s where we should be. It’s certainly where we should aim to be.

As an older supporter-I think the sense of entitlement of performance and transfer spend is way over the top. We’ve broken our record transfer fee this summer 5 times. That’s as many as we have in the last 30 years.

I’ve got the mind set of enjoying the ride-like others have posted shitty getting beaten-whatever team but I’ll take losing at Arsenal over losing at home to Yeovil every single time.

Broken the transfer record 5 times this summer, but still nowhere near what a lot of Premier League teams are paying for players.

Nobody likes seeing their team lose, but this season won’t be like recent seasons where we have won the majority of our games. I agree enjoy the ride, enjoy watching the opposition. Nobody said it would be easy. You learn more from a defeat than a win. You only improve by testing yourself against better opposition.

We have earned the right to be back in the Premier League. We now have to earn the right to stay here.

You were always going to get jumped on and accused of 'moaning' or 'lacking a backbone' 😂. You should know better than to come on here making a sombre, genuine post about how you feel.

I understand the sentiment. Friday did feel all a bit sterile and soulless. Last few seasons have been great, an amazing journey, but on a personal level I think after 35 years of travelling away, I'm finding the spark has gone and I would have said the same had we not been promoted, but maybe that amplifies a bit in the PL with the overall experience. This might be my last season travelling away every game (or close to it, i do miss the odd midweek game). That's maybe my age, my lad is where I was in my late teens and is chomping at the bit.

There's no shortage of people wanting to go in my place so all good. But yeah, just finding away days can be a chore sometimes, Friday I was flat and didn't enjoy it half as much as I used to. Still love home games though, and really looking forward to the season, going to be fun.

I understand where the OP is coming from but I disagree. Being an underdog fighting against the odds has basically been the club's identity for a lot of the last 10-15 years, and it's not as though players weren't using us as stepping stones lower down the pyramid either. Basically every club in world football is in that position, just to different extremes.

Giving a bloody nose to one of the big dogs this season would feel pretty sweet.

Exactly - this is our usual safe space as fans! Backs against the wall, underdogs. CBS to be rocking - can’t wait.

If we are to get whipped, I'd rather be whipped by Arsenal than Yeovil

I can see I guess why people think like this but my best times supporting the club were always in the top flight.

We didn’t escape relegation every season it’s just an urban myth but they were far better times.

In the 80’s I pretty much went to every game and didn’t even live in Coventry for four years of it. Away support then was abysmal. You’d literally have 100 fans at Anfield to get pasted.

You still got to see the big teams though. A win at Highbury in the early 80’s was probably the best of the lot.

League one and league two were just nonsense and dreadful experiences. The league 2 season was shocking. Honestly even the championship felt low level as you just aren’t playing the best teams in the best grounds.

The expectation is low but there will be the occasional big result and it’s more exciting than beating a team in the championship

Other than the Northampton shambles I’ve been a season ticket holder since I was 7. I didn’t think I’d see us again here. I don’t think some fans will cope with defeat after defeat but I think it’s going to be great.

It is why I think winning the FA Cup for me was far more meaningful than for a Liverpool or Manchester United fan. They sort of just expect it. For Coventry fans it really was an achievement, a milestone.

We may not have had the success over the years but I have had the privilege of watching some really good players wearing the City shirt. As you said we were not just surviving every year in top flight. Most seasons with our best side out fully fit we could give anybody a decent game home or away.
