Championship thread 25/26! (3 Viewers)

Depending on how long it takes to prove (if they have done this to many clubs in the run of 19 games or whatever it is unbeaten) could that mean the teams they beat be rewarded with 3 points? Could that mean we get an extra 3 points? They beat us at the CBS and probably had Inspector Clouseau in the Ryton bushes

So you are allowed to spy just not within 72 hours of the game? Somewhat of a conflicting message that.

Anyway, im adding the 5 points dropped against them to our total. So we did hit 100 points 🥳

I can’t get my head around why Soton would need or want to spy. Theyve literally played them twice. We could all probably pick Boros team and formation. Crazy
Set pieces? Quite possible Boro would have been working on a new one for this game.

Interesting to see how the EFL deal with this.

100% impacts the sporting integrity of the match especially to the level committed (knowing all the Boro first team due to the mics picking up the manager’s voice).

With how much the match is worth, don’t think a points deduction or a fine is enough for Boro as this will still impact the tie.

Maybe Southamptons manager should be banned from the touchline? Or maybe even reviewing their place in the tie.

Shameful behaviour from a club who already have a major advantage with the parachute payments and if they can prove they’ve been doing it all season, then serious consequences imo need to be provided

Absolutely I mean how many teams down the bottom have they played and 'beat' who could of got 3 points to go towards safety?

If there’s evidence from other clubs then why wasn’t it reported? It’s illegal.

I'd imagine there wasn't evidence originally but other clubs may now have gone back and checked.
And because a whistleblower has allegedly said it's happened against other teams. So it's a case of now he's been caught once there might be more evidence coming to light.

Surely every game since the manager took over will need to be looked into. If it is all true Boro and Wrexham will have special grievances but also every other team in the championship will question their result v soton. I’m sure both Boro and Wrexham legal teams being briefed as of now. Equally their fa cup run needs to be looked at…did these shenanigans prevent Arsenal from having a chance at a treble?
Can’t see how this can be investigated in a sort space of time…likely to run over the whole close season.
Not sure how the efl will respond if allegations proven. What punishment will fit the crime; fine, fine and points deduction next season (is this possible if promoted through playoffs), demotion by at least one division?

I imagine knowledge of set pieces and strategies taken by which players would be a very decent advantage.

As would the key factor of knowing if we were playing a 5 man (3 CB) defence or a 4 man (2 CB) as they tend to have different strengths. For example against yourselves we got it wrong IMHO by playing a 4 man defence, (with Ayling part of the 4 as well when he's much more effective in a 5.)

With a 4 man defence we can then overload the midfield and dominate that area of play. The solution to that for opponents of ours is to then put more emphasis on pinging long balls to bigger target men further ahead, making the most of quick play down the wings when this isn't an option, to effectively take the midfield out of the equation wherever possible which you did against us, without spying may I add. Their defence then compacts into the centre to create a denser wall of players facing where most of our attacks will come from.

If we play a 5 man defence then this is obviously more solid, but especially in Hackney's absence, we lose a little of our well known strength in midfield. Our opponents then know that it isn't a complete "no go zone" through the centre as much as it was previously. In terms of our attacks, opponents also know to dispatch their best ball-winning and tackling players down the flanks as the likes of Bangura and Silvera can break with speed down these and are more likely to get utilised.

Of course a lot more advantage would be gained if knowing how fit Hackney was to play in advance, or whether we had other injuries that had flared up (such as Bangura as mentioend), how likely Casteldine was to start instead of Gilbert if not as the two require different marking strategies, etc.

Lastly, a little advantage could also be gained if penalties were seen being taken and more importantly the identities of any players other than Tommy Conway tending to take them, though I think this strategy would have been more prevalent before the second leg for obvious reasons.

Typical playoff 1dt leg game that last night really

I can't see the EFL making a decision before the play offs are finished, they will probably be hoping the cheating cunts don't win them & then they will get a minor sanction. The problems will start for the EFL if they win the play offs. I think they should be kicked out the play offs & Middlesboro go into the final.

Gibson won't let it go either. He's a bit a prick to be honest but in this case I wouldn't blame him.

Fingers crossed.

Fine them £110m. If they get promoted they have to cope with Championship-level revenue; if they don’t they go pop.

What, realistically, do we think could happen?

Surely if there's multiple allegations from over the course of the season, they can't investigate them all overnight. Do they make a decision purely on the Boro issue and then look at the rest after the two legs?

Is there any precedent for this type of thing?
Yes large fine

That cheating wanker has just won the last three manager of the month awards, needs to be stripped of those too.

Yes large fine
This tie is potentially worth a lot of money. I think the issue with a fine, is that if Southampton win, they’ll get more money back from the Wembley match. I think personally it needs to be stronger as a fine doesn’t help Middlesboro or bring any sporting integrity back into the tie.

Its a strong option but we’ve seen teams taken out of cup competitions for less

Give an example

They have to be kicked out of the playoffs. A fair semi isn’t possible now and there’s doubts over the results that got them there. Anything else is no punishment at all.
Id have a fair semi if they were kicked out

He went after Derby through the courts for their financial trickery.
There is some real needle as well, when I was living up there Derby played at The Riverside in the height of Gibson pursuing them in the courts and there was some real bother before and after the game in the town centre

Personally I think knowing breaking the explicit rules of the league on a matter of fairness and integrity is as big a matter. Especially when Swindon can at least claim that it was accidental.

Would ask tho whats your thoughts on how it should be dealt with?
Fine them and move on
