Match Thread Coventry City vs Aston Villa [LC] (H) - Coventry Building Society Arena - Wed 16th September (8pm KO) (33 Viewers)

Overall a much better performance. A lot more physical presence , impetus and belief.
Its so hard to play against these very good players. We have now had three good spells in last three games.
Its just the other teams can outlast us and lets be clear have stronger squads and purpose and method.
I really do not see how you can say any of that first line at all

Yet another game where we just looked shit scared. Panicking on the ball, no cohesion, no leadership on the pitch or from the sidelines. No real desire or quality to go forward, many running around aimlessly not seeming to know their roles. So weak in 50/50s and second balls, and naive to all the dark arts. Desperately frustrating to watch.

We might well go down this year but can we not spend 9 months uttering tedious bilge about the half arsed championship dross that would have made all the difference had we signed them. Once we’ve stopped that can we progress to stopping the witless testicles about how we should have signed endless past it chancers that we couldn’t afford. And lastly can no one ever mention Xhaka ever again
Writing was on the wall when we had people begging for Harrison Burrows

Which one of you arsewipes called in saying we may as well have kept Brad Collins?

And while I’m at it, which thick twat said that was Simms last game, when Awonyi is literally banned for the next 2?

you see some daft things on here but CWR after a game is something else

It was poor mate, let's be honest.

Shamble again really. We’re so naive tactically. Trying to ply PL football without PL players instead of finding a system that works. Lampard desperately needs help setting a defence up because we aren’t going to win the ball high up with this press or dominate possession. Need one of his famous pivots but honestly not sure he’s got it in him to make us solid enough to draw or win games at this level and we don’t have the cash for quality needed to play how he wants.

Torp Yirenkyi Mfuni and Gboho all good. Cherif clearly has potential. CBs are utter garbage and forcing Lats to play RB and us to watch it are human rights violations.

No transfer window on coaching staff. I’d be scouring the place for a defence coach and paying whatever is needed to get them in.
There were positives. The players you mention. Unfortunately defensively we don’t have the options to improve I don’t think. So we’ve got to try and create some chaos like we did for a couple of spells with good energy tonight. It’s a slim shaft of light and weve got to be more clinical when we do force mistakes. We’re always going to concede though which will just be too big a problem to overcome over a season

Youre in a minority, but I agree, thought there were more positives tonight than Sunday, but when you defend corners like that its irrelevant, youre fucked.

People say we need to be clinical but we out scored out xG tonight. We need to create better chances.

I don’t feel as negative as maybe the general consensus of this forum. At the moment we can be really good but only in spells, we probably are not good enough, but I do think we will nick a game by one goal at some point and build on it.

We look okay going forward but it’s so obvious any time we build some momentum on the attack we will concede. At the moment we are so easy to score against.

Thought Torp played the role Grimes should be playing how it should be played, and fantastic goal. Thought Mfuni was impressive for the most part, just guilty of trying to do too much, wouldn’t be against him playing at centre back. Hamer was almost like his old self but again only in snippets.

The thing I find most disappointing is when we go more than a goal down we just seem to down tools, maybe that’s the disparity in quality but I can take losing if we fight.

On to forest, which for the record I think we will struggle to get a result at too, but I am still hopeful and still a lot of football to play.

"Really good in spells" is doing some seriously heavy lifting.

Id say we have looked OK in spells.

Would Amenda have made a difference?
Irrelevant really because we need to get used to life without for at least a couple of months I reckon
Yeah that looked bad, he struggled to get off the pitch. Doubt it's a minor calf strain. I've got nightmares of a prolonged period of Pinnock and Thomas at CB. Might be worth giving Mfuni a go at CB.

That guy was totally brain dead

Disappointing result but it wasn't an awful performance overall, poor defensively but we have some real ballers on the team now, if we work out a system that best utilises them so they grow in confidence and have more playing time together I think we could have an exciting team. Yirenki has to be a starter, his energy adds a lot.

Watched the highlights on YouTube. I might be reading too much into it but Torp is the only player who looked like he cared even a little when they scored their third. Came away very impressed with him tonight, played like he really gives a shit and showed a lot of application and ability.

Said the same to my mate, that's a serious calf strain and in all likelihood 3 months out

I heard him too, what a melt he was

Some positives but a lot of negative. Felt like we had absolute no game plan after their third went in and our players just gave up. Very little fight in the team.
If we defend like that every week wel do well to beat Derby’s record

That’s a fair assessment, and I’m by no means saying it’s good enough, but whenever we have started to look like making something happen we inevitably concede and then fall to pieces. To me feels if we weren’t so fragile at the back we could grow into games and make something happen.

Maybe I am just trying to look at it positively to cope

Its the same as last year, we would always outscore or outgun opposition early on and if not we would concede. We have always been brittle under lampard

I'm not taking the piss but do you literally sit on here all day and night? rarely do i browse a thread you've not commented on a few minutes ago

No mate, sometimes I dont post when Im at the Wolves games

Lots of players being singled out; in some cases fairly (Pinnock) in others I don’t necessarily agree (Hamer).

But regardless, if we had MVE at RB, Tomori at CB and Gyokeres back up front. Do we win that game? We have more of a chance but probably not.

Individuals aside, we have no apparent game plan; best evidenced by a half press which on several occasions left absolute gaping holes in our midfield.

We had wingers tucking way too far in, we had an over reliance on a diagonal pass which only worked once, a keeper who (I assume) was told to play quickly but with only 1-2 players available (and he can’t throw), less punt it forwards than Saturday but it still happened.

And a lack of movement.

What’s the plan?
