Man City basically nicked Sturridge for peanuts. Kirkland wasn't nicked as such, went for half decent money. Can't think of any 'youth' players as such that have been released and gone onto better things.

A few I could name that are currently coaching/managing but in my time as a supporter (since Mid-90s) I would have to say Roland Nilsson, absolutely class player, seemed to be level headed and on the straight and narrow, plus hasn't done too badly when managing Scandanavian teams.

Personally I think not owning the ground regardless of FFP is bad, the club must be missing out on hundreds of thousands of pounds if not more on non football events. I hope if any take over goes through that something can be done about it!
