There would, and they'd be mental.

But the best way is to keep to the facts. So far, this Peru variant is a 'might' and a 'maybe'. Consistency says we have to trust our medical advisors as, well, they're the medical experts. It doesn't mean they'll automatically be right, but they've got a damned site better chance of being right than the rest of us!

The last thing we need is a mask war to be honest.

If people want to wear one then that is absolutely fine, equally if others don't then that is also fine.

Cannot see it playing out like that though.

They've revised the Pfizer efficacy down by a third, haven't they?

They’ve just reintroduced compulsory mask wearing in indoor situations as cases are rising fast. Just as we’re dropping ours and they’re way ahead of us in vaccinations as a percentage of population. Still, Boris lad knows best. There’s also Israeli studies that show the Pfizer vaccine to be less effective than other vaccines against the delta variant.

That did make me smile to be fair. I’ve said before hospitalisations have been amended down once, possibly twice recently, which is good. I accept models are always based on imperfect data but ultimately saying they were wrong due to incorrect assumptions isn’t too bad is it ?!

I could also flip it the other way with everyone saying we should follow the scientific advice and when the government do, people still complain.

So much of this is calculated guesswork as there’s so many variables (not least guessing people’s behaviours !), hence the range of models

Of course the models constantly need reassessing to be as accurate as possible.

But there were a lot of people a year ago who didn't want the models changed because it made the figures even worse. So it's all well and good saying to change the model but you have to agree with it whether the outcome is good or bad. It's supposed to be about accurate information to make informed decisions, not whether or not the new model supports whichever stance you happen to prefer.

*this isn't a comment aimed at you personally btw.

Might be me but i reckon we're going to see far more intimidation of people choosing to wear masks from a minority of denier knobheads than the other way round but we shall see.

Of course it'd be great if everyone just let everyone else make their own choice and left it at that but we all know that's not going to happen. Far too much "everyone must think what I think" these days,

You think people who aren't wearing masks will be more confrontal to those wearing them, than people who are wearing them towards those who aren't?

Interesting take, but either way, I hope people will respect each others wishes.

We’ve been remarkably short of culture war bollocks this pandemic, sad divorcee Fox and the other grifters like P Corbz aside.

We aren’t America. I’m confident we won’t start being pricks IRL about masks. Bit of good old fashioned British tutting at most.

They sure can. But I'm mid-30s, booked my jabs on the very first day of eligibility and bought my second dose forward, and I still won't be fully vaccinated until mid-August. Now I'm told there might be three million new cases by that point, once restrictions end. I'm sure I'd live, and I'm grateful to have a vaccine at all, but it's not exactly how I envisaged things going.

Yup.

Pfizer vaccine efficacy drops in Israel as delta variant spreads

Health authorities in Israel will consider whether to recommend a third booster shot
www.telegraph.co.uk

tbf, I think that puts it alongside the Oxford one, rather than being worse.

Yeah and at around the level that the yearly flu jab is. It still seems to be doing a great job against deaths etc but if we keep letting cases rise things will always increase

Yeah, and of course 94% efficacy would have crushed the thing right down, if most of the young'uns got that one, as there wouldn't have been a virus to spread, to risk breaking through to those where it manages to evade the vaccine protection.

What it is showing is that until we vaccinate the world, we're doing a little tap dance constantly!

I do wish the prophets of absolute doom would fuck off and stop conflating. The vaccine efficacy against INFECTION is down to 64% from an exceptional 95%. It is still a significant level of protection.

When there was talk of developing a vaccine, I think the general hope / expectation was at least something that protected against death.

The vaccines actually were better than expected but for some reason the goalposts have moved, and now there is an outcry when it turns out that you might have a relatively benign illness even if vaccinated.

They were acting like idiots, but really. No one would get charged for that if the victim was just an average citizen. The estate agent has lost his job too.

The cost of taking that to court, should have been restorative justice. A full apology and warning.

As I've said before it's because the evidence is there to increase the chance of getting a conviction. Average man isn't going to have cameras pointed at him all the time, although is becoming far more common.

I also said it's to make a statement out of self interest. The politicians and police know that if they let this slide the chances of them being accosted in a similar manner increases, so throw the book at these and spare yourself some aggro

I agree it's over the top, but this is the way it is.

37 deaths

Would 100000 lead to 150 or more?

Let’s see what happens. Happy to trust chief medical officer
