I mean, I wouldn’t press charges. But I’m not a 55 yo man and I’ve got no idea what his previous experience with violence is or how traumatic it was.

If you’re the kind of person that can’t handle his beer and is likely to go around laying hands on strangers you should probably either stop drinking or accept the consequences really. Ive managed 40 years and many beers without being charged with assault

I thought it was down to the person? Do CPS decide? Maybe I’ve been watching too many American shows.

I said I’d stop prattling but the way we ignore the law and expert advice in this country is beyond my understanding. Don’t get me wrong, like St Paul I am the worst sinner and hypocrite of them all but when I hear people say it’s ok to drive 45 down London road or not have insurance because the car isn’t worth much I’m flabbergasted

When Chris Whitty and Vallance explain how virus’s mutate and the dangers to public health and we ignore it and it’s fine cos I’ve not had Covid

I am maybe to in bed with authority and I do enjoy others different thought patterns and challenge but unless we start paying attention to those that know more than us we really are heading to hell in a handcart

And Pva you’re bang on I told you it was common assault, anyone can see that the legal definition of what this is was met in the video but still we’ll have friends on here say it wasn’t too bad or I’ve done worse or it’s the nanny state etc etc etc.

It’s not big or clever to put the fear of god into someone just for a laugh and if others think it is then like shmmee says expect some consequences.

The police could bring the charges rather than Whitty couldn't they?

Yeah clearly I have no idea how the criminal justice system works. I thought it was the person. Seems I’m wrong. Luckily I’ve never had to find out IRL.

Yep. They asked him at the time and he didn't want to press charges, but...

"Officers subsequently reviewed video footage which emerged after the incident and the matter was referred to the Public Order Crime Team. Enquiries continue."

Its more to do with the chance of getting a conviction if the person who was attacked doesn't want to get involved and may not give a statement or appear as a witness should it get that far.

Given that everything now seems to be filmed probably less of an issue than in the past.

Could be they often have to rely on testimony from the victim and if they don't want to press charges it's not worth their while pursuing. If they have footage from CCTV or whatever then they might have enough for a conviction without testimony and press on regardless. It's all about securing a conviction with the evidence they have.

Possibly also now a political thing in seeing to stamp down on anti-social/threatening behaviour so they can be seen to be 'tough'. Out of self-interest the politicians and even police may think it'd set a precedent if they let Whitty be harangued like that and would encourage others to do the same to them.

I have no skin in this game, I just had a sneak at this thread last night and the debate bored me but I had to drop in and lol at the dunking Pete got only to be proved absolutely spot on.

Won't be any contrition though, it'll be "police are stupid, nanny state, MSM" or some bollocks.

The main stupidity is letting himself be filmed doing it! Otherwise he'd have blended into the night. It's one of those where because of the profile, they're boxed into a corner where there's little choice but pressing charges really.

How are we all regarding July 19th? Looking great isnt it. Normality (or as close too).

We still got people cowering behind the sofa even with Whitty and Vallance saying were ok?

Irrelevant though isn't it cases?

The whole point was to stop hospitalisations and the NHS being overrun and of course minimise deaths

The jab works, we've got the info we need, we've jabbed millions more, if we don't crack on now we never will

I think speeding is a good comparison. Most here probably speed a bit (I know I do as my licence attests), and don’t think it’s much of a crime. But everyone I’d assume would accept if they got caught it’s a fair cop.

Not irrelevant for other countries not as vaccinated as we are though in regards to letting us in.

Not if that is what the experts are saying. I wonder what normal will look like. Johnson seems to be rolling back a bit on 'Freedom day' and dropping the odd hint that some things will be retained.

the delta variant is starting its course through a less vaccinated Europe so there will be a lot of stand off behaviour for a while before they get done with their 4th wave.

It's all along the lines of 'some very strong wording' though, which is the worst of all worlds! It's either OK, in which case tell us, or if some things are needed, it's pointless having the 95yo who hasn't been out do it, while Piers Corbyn refuses as it's voluntary.

we should allow freedom of choice and give advice on risks now. It’s absurd we are even discussing continuing measures

But the point being, if it's a risk just to you then crack on, if your action causes risk to other people, then you abdicate your freedom of choice.

That's where it's stupid having it voluntary, as the people who *would* be a risk to others would be the people not doing it! You either legislate for it, or don't bother with it in the first place. Plus 'strong advice' causes doubt rather than reassures. As messaging... it's piss poor, really.

It's the same line as 'we're not closing pubs, but don't go in them' at the beginning of all this - absolute stupidity as it harms, well, just about everybody and ultimately helps nobody.

But crossing the road is a risk. We need to fully unlock now. The at risk groups have had the option of vaccines - it’s always been an option to wear masks in Japan when there was concern on SARS and people took the choice they wished to do. We should do that here. I’d never wear one and others may choose to
