Match Thread Everton vs Coventry City (A) - Hill Dickinson Stadium - Fri 6th November (8pm KO) (3 Viewers)

The titanic is a fantastic hotel. Prices not that bad in truth and the food is pretty reasonably priced

The pub struck gold by being there. I went in once before the ground was fully built and I went in the club shop just as it was opening

Liverpool is great - I love it. Stop in the hope street hotel as well sometimes when going to a concert over the road.
We stayed at the Titanic in 2015 not long after it opened, we were up there for the Mathew St Festival, the West Ham team were also staying there as they were playing Liverpool.
Found myself having Sunday morning coffee on the terrace with Slaven Bilic, Arron Cresswell & Mark Noble etc 🤔 well on the next table anyway, they were all in good spirits as they’d unexpectedly won 3 v 0.

As you say it’s a fantastic city & the Titanic a fantastic hotel & very reasonable considering how nice it is, we go to Liverpool every year for Grand National weekend but we haven’t stayed there since as we prefer to stay more central.

Spot on, for a hotel as posh as that, the Titanic is very reasonably priced, both for food and drink, it`s just too far out of the centre for me. James Rodriguez lived had a suite there whilst he was at Everton and you`d quite often see him in the bar or restaurant with his entourage, he was a really sound guy, happy to talk o everyone and have his photo taken.( Pity fat boy Benitez held a grunge from their time at Real Madrid together ! )

Around by the Hope St hotel is by far my favourite area to eat and drink, you`ve got the beautiful Georgian architecture, set in the shadow of the Anglican Cathedral.

There`s some of Liverpool`s finest back street pubs all within walking distance - The Belvedere, Ye Cracke, The Roscoe Head, The Blackburne Arms, The Cambridge and that`s without venturing into the likes of The Philharmonic.

Then you`ve got all the new stuff that`s sprung up over the past few years, you could spend a whole weekend eating and drinking in that area and not have to leave.

It`s mad to think, that only twenty years ago around there was full of prossies and smackheads, dingy bedsits and generally wasn`t a safe place to be after dark !
You can add the grapes to that list, also Peter Kavanaghs, don't get more quirky than there!
Yeah round the Georgian is my favourite for pubs. Roscoe, White Heart, ye crack, shandon, grapes, mayflower, then pouges and stuff edge of town. Peter kavanghs also a belter but normally a bit far out for a run.

I'm doing other side of town this time. Ship & mitre, shinanigans, lion tavern etc. then walk to the ground

what’s the strange Irish bar opposite hope street hotel that looks - clearly deliberately - it’s from the 70’s
I`ve not been in, as it`s very new, but it`s called the Shandon Bells or something like that.

There`s a few pubs like this sprung up, that are brand new, but made to look " old ".

There`s a another new pub, that`s been made to look old in Hope Street, just over the road from the Philharmonic, tucked away in back alley alongside the Casa bar - The Engineer.
Was in there the other week. Nice TBF, show the football and good pint. Very much on the novelty old boozer trend.

I'm up here as well and these places are all great. The back room at the Vines is really nice as well. Just a short walk from Lime St. The Monro and St Peters Tavern (the old Alma de Cuba) on Duke Street both have a decent beer selection and the Red Lion on Slater St is a really good pub. Newest one which I haven't been to yet is the Queen's Arms on Victoria Street. Think it's the same guys who have this. Hoping to nip here on Friday as will be round by Dale Street. Denbigh Castle is also a decent boozer but think it is a bit of an Evertonian favourite.

Edited for you.

I rarely see past Lark lane - but that's where the wife grew up. Has a mug telling us all she's a posh scouser....its all very odd behaviour for a grown woman :ROFLMAO:.

Slightly off track, but I'll take the opportunity for a small rant.......Liverpool has had so much investment and being proper spoilt over the last few decades....I seem to recall it all started after the European City of Culture back in the 80's. Cities like ours, despite being one of the countries most famous medieval Cities gets pretty much fook all !!

I do love Liverpool and my Dad's family are from north Liverpool and had pubs around Goodison back in the day...but feck me, Id just like to see little old Coventry get a bit of the treatment and investment that Liverpool has had !! And despite that favourable treatment, we still have that bizarre and strange take on being scouse and not English! (In my wifes words...."that's the red shite who say that daft stuff").

Yes, the same guy - Rob Gutton, who used to run clubs back in the day. The pubs are a bit samey with lots of animals heads and the like but decent beers and some pies sometimes. Newest one I believe is one on Bold Street if you want something nearer and are getting the train from Central - although the Central - Sandhills line will be clogged up and if not raining as others have suggested drink around the business end of town and walk it in around 20 mins - The Lion is a cracking boozer still independent, next to the Railway. City Wine Bar if you fancy wine instead of beer!

To improve Coventry City centre, you need Coventry people to come in and use it. Sadly many don’t, they go to South Warks or get on the train to Brum and they seem to be the ones with the disposable. It leaves CV1 with a combination of hardened drinking old timers, students and the asylum crowd that walk in from the surrounds like Hillfields. The first group are slaughtered by 7 pm, the second group who are mainly Oriental are more civilised and use the places for food or a coffee and a warm meeting place and the last lot wander around with pushchairs and kids with very little to spend and certainly not in the pubs.

That has been a catch 22 situation for a long time. Until the environment improves significantly and the retail offering is attractive then there is no chance of attracting people either money to spend.

Instead, apart from some cosmetic changes, it seems to get worse year on year.

City centre South is now going to be largely residential and has come 20 years too late to have a positive impact.

In the 90’s we used to get to Lime St early and there was a pub across the road that looked closed, but you used to go round the back and go in and it was packed.
Plenty of guys with the old head bags selling stuff,
And if you wanted anything just give them 20 mins and they’d get it.
Very friendly in there too, can’t remember the name though.
Great times!!
Just thought was it the Punch and Judy?

Was it the Penny Farthing? Next door to Royal Court? It felt like midnight at midday in there!

I agree to a point.

The rejuvenation actually started bizarrely with Michael Hestletine ( if you`re old enough ) for some reason taking the city under his wing and with a load of European money and government grants, bringing the Albert Dock back to life and also reclaiming a massive council tip alongside the River Mersey and turning it into the Garden Festival, which is now the Festival Gardens housing estate.

That was the spring board for everything that came after.

The reason I use bizarre, is that Michael Hestletine was the Secretary for State ( I think ) in Thatchers government and she was hell bent on destroying Liverpool because of Derek Hatton and his Militant mob who ran the city council.

For some reason, as you say, certain cities seem to have been forgotten, Coventry being one, but there`s so many more too, Burnley, Bolton, Blackburn, Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Preston, Carlisle and they`re just off the top of my head !

To this day no one really knows why Hestletine took Liverpool under his wing, as he had no connection with the place and it must`ve certainly caused him bother both career wise and personally with Thatcher, but of he hadn`t, it could`ve been a completely different story.

Moral of the story, sometimes it just takes something so leftfield, you`d never ever think it would happen, to make things actually happen.

Showing your age there !

Got shut down after " Operation Chicken " ( that seriously was the name of the Police Op - imagine the outcry now if they used that name ! ) in the early 2000`s.

Rent boys, sometimes under age, were picking clients up in there and in the toilets at Lime Station over the road and they then take them onto the twisty stairwells of the NCP car par park at the back of the pub and do their business on the stairwells. ( they used the stairwells, as they could hear people in advance coming up or down the stairs ).

This focused attention on the pub, which up until then had largely got away with the fact that you could almost buy anything you wanted in there.

When the police raided it as part of the Operation, they also found a load of guns and drugs too, that was the end of the old Penny Farthing.

It was more like a cave than a pub, it`s been properly done up since then and is a theatre bar and eatery for the Royal Court next door.

I don't know that level of detail!! I arrived here in 1991, so it must have been after that! Also that mad pub underneath the Empire was still there - Legs of Man? All these places were mildly terrifying for a young student with a non-scouse accent!!!

Ah yes - sorry I meant the garden festival. Still got all the souvenirs from that. Spent days of my life around that garden festival/show!..it was class!I For some reason I thought that was part of the European city of culture....

A quick glimpse on their board and most of them expect to smash us 3/4 -0 and for them to move up to 4th place!!!!
Not sure we will be quite that easy, but reckon a 1-1 would be good.
