Match Thread Bristol City FC - Coventry City [LC] Match Thread - Tuesday 13th Aug

Really couldn't give a rats about the result

Still going though

With Sheaf out for a number of weeks to come, and with no incoming midfielder on the horizon, I would hope that Torp and Eccles would be paired together.

I’m no fan of Eccles, and it does concern me slightly that despite playing over 100 games, he does not (yet) seem to have been someone to take a game by the scruff of the neck and impose himself on it. It’s time he stepped up to take some seniority.

Although, given how people rave about his passing, and the seeming inability of being able to keep a clean sheet with him as Centre Back (1 clean sheet in all his starts), how about trying Binks as a number 6? Might as well use this game as a free hit to try something different

I would play the bench with some starters from yesterday. We need the best 11 ready for next Friday against Oxford in the league. The players won’t be at it if they play Sat, Tues and then Fri. Fully expect Robins to make plenty of changes.

Dovin
Latibeaudiere - Kitching - Binks - JDS
Allen - Eccles
BTA - Palmer - EMC
Tavares

Win and we get the chance of a big team in the next round.

Would love Newcastle, West Ham or Everton home or away.

Always a good away day to be fair and great half time entertainment if it’s the same as last season

Brilliant ground. It was great before but they've done a good job of redeveloping it. Kept it's charm but modern and compact.

Bristol is a great city, shame the ground is a big walk from the town.

Very friendly bunch
Had just been on the OTIB forum. Knowledgeable, and not full of angry folk trying to score internet points. Actually talk about the forthcoming game, plus observations on the opposition, together with historic games between the clubs.

Agree with the observation that with Oxford on Friday we will field a mainly second string team. Bristol will have a longer recovery time (I assume) before their next match so will play a slightly stronger side. Will be interesting to see how the "second choice" players perform.
As Eccles alluded to, we are playing a different game plan this season with wingers and a smaller central midfield. That turned out to be a bit of a disaster at Stoke. Bristol, with a fitter squad, on paper, are better than Stoke.
We need to turn up and tweak the tactics.

Hope we play the reserves and go out tbh, couldn't give 2 fucks

League has to be priority

Absolute same, couldn’t give a shit about cups this season, okay maybe there’s something “magical” about certain competitions like the FA cup but to me it’s about getting promotion. Wouldn’t usually care either way but I feel like this season I’d rather go out early and get rests/coaching into the squad rather than have to play an extra load of games.

Had we put in a decent performance against Stoke I'd have said play the back-ups and give them a chance to say they should be involved.

But we didn't and we need to put that performance out of our system so I'd play the same starting XI. If they put in a similar showing as Saturday thern big chances for Friday, especially in midfield. Torp and Allen must be close to being dropped.

Having said that with a league game on Fri we need to use all the subs available and give the main players 60mins at the most, then give squad players so game time in the legs. IMO result isn't that important - we need to use this game as an opportunity to work out the things that went wrong Saturday.

Totally agree but I would give minutes to players like Wright , BTA , DaSilva ,Kitching and even Tavares

We have a league game vs Bristol C coming up after Oxford. So we play them a couple of times in quick succession. If I had to choose between the 2 games vs Bristol C, I'd obviously priortise winning the league match over the cup game. It would also be wise not to show all our cards in the cup game and beat them in the league. Also with the Oxford game coming up on Friday, I think we definitely need to rotate the players.

Weren't there a recent season when this was played the weekend before the start of season (covid perhaps)?

Better to go back to that.
Yeah we played MK Dons away and won 1-0 which was our first competitive game back since we won at Ipswich in March 2020

First year in League One we also we played Dagenham in the League Cup before the season started a few days later - Won 1-0 Kilbane last min penalty, was an awful match and half the away end was almost embarrassed that we won

Whilst I can understand not being as bothered if we get beat, I certainly can't wrap my head around wanting us to lose either - Success breeds success and it really annoyed me last season that if we held on against Wimbledon we'd have got an away day at Stamford Bridge out of it

I am going, I wasn't going to bother considering in years gone by he has played a glorified U23s side in this stage of the competition but got suckered in by being off work, a £10 ticket for 30pts, a decent away day and the fact that now we have got more of a squad these days we will hopefully make more of a fist of it as opposed to our usual 1st round exits with a whimper

Bristol City usually a sticky game for us, can see it going penalties

I obviously hope we prioritise the Oxford game and rest players accordingly, but i still want us to win. Can't understand wanting your team to lose tbh.

Play the strongest team here, it’s not like any of them will be fatigued after that shitshow yesterday. They need another game to get shit sorted out, so this should be used for that

What and then be knackered for Friday?

While I wouldn’t necessarily play the strongest possible team, I wouldn’t play a bunch of kids either. As said before, it doesn’t help to get the mentality we want in the squad if we decide to start chucking games this early on.

Wilson
Burroughs Lati Kitching DaSilva
Allen Howley
Tavares Palmer EMC
Asante

For me

Game 1 of asking robins to go for a 4-4-2. Think we should mix it to allow fitness for some and rotation. Happy to go out but want to see the game plan.

Dolvin
Da Silva - Kitching - Lati - Burroughs
EMC - Eccles - Torp- Raphel
Wright - BTA

Play fringe players don't want any injuries but I would play with two forwards.
