Arsenal ratings

Grimes won’t be in the team by Christmas, he’s just too slow. Love him, but it’s over.
This is the kind of comment that someone with no knowledge of the game makes.

He actually struggled because Onyeka was guilty of ball watching all the time and leaving spaces for Arsenal players to run into, and Yirenkyi was constantly out of position and actually had a nightmare debut.

Grimes was actually the only one trying to hold the centre of the midfield together.
If I was to be critical of him id say he gave the ball away too often, but then again our front 3 didn't make the runs to give him options.

Yirenki will need a fair bit of time to settle I think,he didn't look at the level last night tbh...big step up for a lot of our players and a huge step up for him from Danish football.

Simms limitations were exposed when he was replaced. He has zero pace. There’s no denying effort but if he’s first choice forward it’s a swift return to the championship
What do you mean his limitations were exposed when he was replaced? How can his limitations be exposed when he’s not on the pitch? 🧐

I think he struggled without a ten coming in behind to pick up on his hold up play. Onyeka and Caleb were like blue arsed flies.

I think games where we can compete a bit more and we play Rudi in behind him will be the ones for him.

Otherwise Awoniyi or Cherif up top with power and pace to unsettle higher quality teams on the transition.

Arsenal kept putting in accurate passes to their forwards and midfielder from the edge of the box both left and right and that were not getting cut out. They did not try to put in crosses for headers because I suppose our centre backs were going to be pretty dominant in the aerial battles. Most other teams won't be able to do that.

I don't think you can rate the players yesterday considering the gulf between the two teams

In football you tend to get what you pay for

With regards the midfield, Onyeki and Grimes cost 10 m quid together and were bought with the specific task of getting promoted in mind. Which they did.

Now we need a midfield to keep us up. Hamer and yenekyi cost nearly 30 m.and you have to allow for Hamer being worth more than we paid.

Those two have to be the defensive base sitting in front of the back four.

We will make a lot of mistakes and give the ball away much more this year. The level of athleticism across the PL is a big step up and I think his lack of speed will be regularly exposed in the fast transitions that will happen when we lose possession. He already struggled with this at times last year and that’s when we were dominating. He has a great first touch and metronomic passing ability but the games where we are able to play to those strengths will be few and far between. The midfield will need to be more dynamic than it was yesterday if we are going to stay up, and by Christmas, when everyone is fully up to speed, I think his place will be under pressure.

His limitations were exposed as the guy who replaced him had attributes he doesn’t

Feel like these are harsh ratings but we were miles off them in all aspects

Rushworth 4
JDS 5
Thomas 6
Amenda 6
MVE 4.5
Grimes 4 passenger
Onyeka 5
Caleb 4.5 all over the place in a bad way
Loum 5.5
BTA 4
Simms 6.5

Can’t say Awoniyi did much more than Simms though? Yes Awoniyi clearly stronger and faster but didn’t lead to anything did it?

Barely “exposed” Simms’ shortcomings.

Despite your claims to the contrary he isn’t good enough - no pace at this level isn’t good enough. We can’t have sentiment and just have to accept and move on

Should Simms be our starting centre forward if we want to stay in the Prem? Absolutely not.

But to draw such a conclusion on his ability at this level after one game, arguably one of his better performances considering we were playing one of the best teams in world football right now, feels hasty.

But respect your right to draw such a conclusion.

I have a feeling this time next week we will feel a lot better - only for the Man City away experience the week after I am really looking forward as never been to Man City but nervous how we turn up for it

Hamer - (need to play more than 10 minutes for a score)

Our midfield was playing against the most expensive English midfielder in prem (mainstay of England team and future captain), Norways captain and probably one of the best midfielders around and Lewis skelly who Chelsea are desperate to buy and they’re getting 3s, 4s and 5s

A bunch of our fans need a reality check and quick
So by the same mark if we play brilliantly against Plymouth and players get rating of 8/9/10 should we have a reality check because we're so much better than them?

Match ratings are a reflection of that match and if the players play poorly, even if that's because the other team are miles better, then the ratings should reflect that.

Rushworth -5
Looked nervous in the tunnel and should have left the second goal if he couldn't grab it properly. Slight blame for the 3rd as, although it was mishit, he should have had time to readjust given the slow speed of the shot so I think he went too early.

MvE - 5
Poor for the first - should have either put it out for a throw or passed it back to Thomas, though he was a bit unlucky the ball ricocheted back to their player. Didn't have much defensive support from Loum either - second half he was having to mark two players and Loum sauntered back. MvE pointed at the runner and told Loum to pick him up so he could go to the player with the ball. Loum didnt bother tracking the runner and they were through on goal.

Dasilva - 6
Put in a decent effort and did ok. Was helped a bit more by BTA than MvE was with Loum though.

Thomas - 6.5
Stood up to the challenge well enough and got a couple of decent blocks in.

Amenda - 7
Looks good and the one capable of dealing with Arsenal if we weren't just constantly defending.

Grimes - 5
Seemed shocked at the speed with which Arsenal closed down and cut off passing lanes and then seemed to panic slightly. Misplaced some simple passes I don't think I've ever seen him do before. Struggled to keep up with the movement of the Arsenal midfield.

Yirenkyi - 4
Game completely passed him by and was ineffective defensively and in attack. Only memorable moments were the yellow (maybe a bit soft) and then another foul after which you're just wanting him to be subbed before he gets sent off.

Onyeka - 5
No idea why the game plan was to have Onyeka playing alongside Simms in the press. Just left gaps for Arsenal to pass into and left us overwhelmed. You could see why Brentford fans were saying he can't pass.

BTA - 4.5
Had absolutely no effect as an attacking force. At least he did try and help out Dasilva.

Tchaouna - 4.5
Passed the ball back the few times we looked like we might be able to get at Arsenal rather than trying to take them on. Also seemed to be walkabout defensively and was often drifting too far into the middle. Whether that was Lampard's instructions I don't know but it left MvE very exposed.

Simms - 6
Had a good tussle with Gabriel and definitely held the ball up better than he used to. Won some aerial duels but was so isolated no-one was there to pick them up. Poor touch in the area which he should have controlled. Looked alright, but then Awoniyi came on and did it better.

Torp - 6 Decent if unremarkable. Put in a good ball for Rudoni's header.
Rudoni - 5.5 Clearly not up to speed yet but was good to see him making those runs into the box for his header, even if he mistimed it.
Hamer - 6 Wasn't really on for long
Awoniyi - 7 Simms but better. Held the ball up well, was aggressive with the defenders and won his aerial challenges.

Biggest disappointment was that the players seemed to let the occasion get to them and locked overawed by it.

Sakamoto should of started. He is good in possession, and keeps the ball better. Tchaouna did alright, but wasn't displicned enough getting bsck.
BTA is not a wide player. I wouldn't be surprised if he moved on before month-end, as it seems we're still in for a wide man.
Was disappinted with Oneyka.
JDS, Bobby & Amelda all decent, and SImms, well done sir. gave Gabriel major problems. Just a shame we couldn't capitalise on it.
Taiwo looked lively as did Torp when they came on.

He looked absolutely terrified when the camera was on him, it was weird. Had a face like a kid that was going to be absolutely leathered by his old man for calling his mum a bitch
A bit over the top, but yes he looked nervous, Whether he made errors for the goals is debatable, but the manner of them will have affected him. Could do with a clean sheet against Hull.

This game reminded me a bit of the Bournemouth 4-0 loss when we had just got back to the Championship. Rushworth looked terrified and very nervous. A few players looked very tentative. Needed to be a bit more like Capo Verde and just go at them. Steep learning curve but I think we will climb it very quickly. Some first ever games in the UK, lots of premier league debuts. We often dropped a clanger last season early in the game of the type that led to the first goal but they don't get punished the way that did. The defense looked even more nervous after that. It will take a bit of time to gel. I suspect we are about to see a very ruthless side of Lampard. If he thinks players won't be good enough I suspect they will be gone quite quickly regardless of what they did for us last season. I think the end to the transfer window could be quite lively with at least four or five also being moved out and still a few more coming in. Let's keep things in perspective. Leicester just lost at home to Burton! We know how that feels . . .

He wasn't the only one TBF. A few of them looked like reality had sunk in and the open top bus seems a long time ago. We played the occasion I thought. We're not used to teams dominating like that but it was our first game back. Hull will feel a lot different .
They looked good against a poor Man U side though.

We need to stop the tactic of Rushworth hoofing it, if it don't go out of play we end up more often than not conceding possesion, that bit frustrated the hell out of me
I love him as a keeper, but his kicking has never been good IMO. Most of those long balls on Friday were impossible for anybody to latch onto, only relieving the pressure on us for a few seconds.

The other really disappointment yesterday was the quality's of our set pieces. That first corner of the game didn't even beat the first man.
I don't think Grimes should be anywhere near free kicks and corners, Hamer Rudi or Torp should be on them obviously they were not on the pitch until later so someone had to take them !

Arsenal have a very aggressive press. The not aaatb was definitely to counter their press. Probably saved the defence from even more pressure/panic. Won't be used all the time (depending on opposition - e..g. Man City)
