Did he have one?

Respect where it's due Hulls game plan worked a treat again. Everybody knew how they were going to set up.

Everybody knew their job and they executed and just waited for us to make a mistake which we obliged time an again.

In my opinion we were lucky we didnt lose 2 nil and again. We could have played for another 90 mins and still not score.

He could have set up so differently

Their sub Millar almost got 2 goals (scored 1)
Our Subs made us worse.

I could go on and on.

Sometimes you have to suck it up and play with what you have.

We could have put on a 75m striker and I dont think the result would have looked much different. For me tactics were found wanting.

Lampard’s strengths always seemed to me to lie in fostering great team spirit, togetherness, a confidence that means when we get on a run, we roll on from game to game. He’s also noticeably got the most out of some individual players - JDS, BTA for example, although I don’t think either are PL standard, they undoubtedly improved greatly last year. And although there are a few examples of players being frozen out, generally people seem to really want to play for him.

I’ve never really seen him as a particularly strong tactician. I’m sure there are examples, but can’t think of many occasions where I’d attribute a win to a tactical masterclass.

He’s tried to recruit to a template that he believes has been successful elsewhere in PL. Athletic, mainly young players, with perceived high ceilings but as yet undetermined floors. I think our chances of success might largely lie on a few of these hitting their ceilings, and if they do it’s more likely to be his man management than tactical acumen that gets us there.

This is that wasn't his game plan. From his interview he was raging at how we were so slow and pedestrian.

Thing is it is up to him to make sure we follow out his plan in future.

So you think the players are disobeying the manager

no, they just did implement it as he wanted

he clearly spoke about us being too slow, sometimes in football platers don't play well and don't ddo what the managers wanrs.

if you think he was lying after the game about wanting us to plat at a greater pass then take it up with him

I am a bit worried that Lampard is doing a Kompany and is prepared to die on his hill that we are going to keep playing the way that got us promoted. Just get the feeling from some of his press conference answers that we will keep playing his way.
Yep i’ve said it’s totally giving burnley vibes.

Worked for Kompany tbf although less so for Burnley...

Some times it's about basics.

Starts with wingers and plays with 1 striker against 3 monster centre backs.

Playing the same way like we did in play off season.

Thats poor.

Why not give it a go at 442!

Its a must not lose game and we play with one striker who was flogged and became ineffective as game went went on.

Subs were poor.

As I mentioned elsewhere to bring on Asante ahead of Simms and then play him on left was lunacy.

Could have and should have gone 442

In hindsight he probably would have but its too late. Had the chance to change it but made wrong choices where we went backwards.

I love Lampard and will back him to the hilt but he struggles with a plan B or a curveball set up/substitution
When Robins was in charge we would very often see a team sheet and wonder what formation , what tactics we were playing
Lampard hasn’t got that flexibility for me at times
The Pinnock sub for example today was very odd when Simms was sat next to him on the bench

Didn’t he say Thomas had cramp?

I don’t think this happened. I think our players respect Frank and his experience enough to go out there and play the way he wants them to play. However, I think the Hull manager did a really good job of nullifying our game plan and imposing his own on the game. That’s probably where the difference was yesterday, for me their manager had a clear plan to counter ours, and I’m not sure Frank had an answer to it.

Lampard imo should gain some inspiration from our game plan when we went on our run in 24/25.

I know it wasn’t pretty but the 5-3-2 really allowed us to grind out results.

We definitely need big changes in my opinion.
Id like to see us drop our possesion based game and hit the forwards earlier and try and attack quicker and with a bit more variety than we did yesterday.

Yes, we'll concede possesion, but as other teams have shown, so what, keep a solid shape, defend what comes at you and go again.
My concern is have we the pace in the side do it affectively having recruited to play in a way that looks like its not going to work?

Yesterday was far too predictable, far too pedestrian.

Finally the penny is dropping!

I’m hoping Frank has a good hard look at himself as well. No doubt what he did for us last season is written in the history books but PL is a different kettle of fish.

Against Arsenal should have set up a formation to soak pressure and counter attack. Not saying we would have got anything but was odd to set up how we did.

Against Hull he used the same tactics which got us nowhere last year. Made subs which made us weaker and took off our only midfield enforcer in Caleb.

All I saw yesterday was a re-run of certain games last season (Hull and Wednesday at home come to mind) where we were making the same criticisms. Our inability to break teams down when they have that game plan is largely irrelevant in that I can't forsee another team coming to the CBS and setting up like that. We've been talking all season about how we'll cope without having much of the ball. We didn't adjust yesterday and failed tactically in a game where we were always likely to dominate possession, we were naive. Games like that will be few and far between. Frustrating as it was, we just have to move on. Brighton and Newcastle will be far better gauge of how we'll set up at home.

I suspect we've been trying to build a side that sits and looks to break and play quickly in transition. Whether we'll be able to do that is unclear because game 1 we were simply outclassed and game 2 we played a team that set up like a mid table championship side. I was annoyed and very pessimistic yesterday, but willing to put that on hold. We do need to pick up some points soon though.

Mmmmmmmm ? Or do you just mean against Hull?
I think he mean when we were a one trick pony season before ..like both legs of play off final when we persisted with wingers and Haji wright up front. And their centre backs soaked and lapped it all up.

Hull played exactly how Sunderland did then home and away.

Doesn't fucking learn

Like some other posters, I am also desperately longing for the turgid, steal-a-goal football of the 5 at the back in the early Lampard era.

Lots of people saying “he has no Plan B”, but that’s complete waffle as we’ve seen him set this team up in lots of different ways last season. It’s clear he has a preference, but it’s also clear he can be pragmatic when needed.

Not really sure what to think of Lampard’s setup after the first couple of games, to be honest. Arsenal and Hull caused us totally different problems. Arsenal pressed us, got right at us and, at times, just seemed to walk through the midfield. Hull were the complete opposite, sat deep, let us have loads of the ball and basically said, “try and break us down.” We didn’t look comfortable in both games.
The biggest concern for me is how we get up the pitch and hurt teams. Grimes gets on the ball and keeps things ticking over, and I’m guessing the plan is for Yirenkyi to give us that bit of drive and carry it forward. But he’s young and new to this level. Further forward, I just don’t see where the real pace or runs in behind are coming from. Awoniyi held it up well at times yesterday, but there was nobody going past him, so it ended up going backwards and we started again. Rudoni and the wide players all seem to want it into feet rather than looking to stretch teams.
I’ve seen a few people mention going to a back three, and maybe that would make us a bit harder to play through, but I’m not sure it fixes the main issue. Who’s running beyond people and getting us up the pitch? Maybe it’s just early days and it’ll click with more work on the training ground. But Lampard might be thinking a few of them can’t do what he wants at this level.

Actually thought Grimes ran fwd with the ball more than he has before, double pivot with yirenkyi? We got in decent positions yesterday, poor final ball and/or a hull team that defends the box well. At which point you're looking for your number 10 to unlock something....Rudi not fit but another profile would help there too

Very small sample size though, to come to that conclusion. In this league we will be likely to lose quite a few matches. Are we going to hound Frank out if we do? Then start blaming DK and going after him? Players too? I think that would be a massive mistake. We have got where we have because of the togetherness. We have messed up ( albeit with better stats) in one game. We may go down, Hull will go down, as will another team ( or two). Turning on the people who have got us here for the first time in years ( especially at this time) is madness.

Certainly hasn't got one this season. Appreciate only 2 games in, but it was crying out for a back 5 against Arsenal and 2 strikers ( even if just 2nd half) against Hull.

I think franks tactics were good first half, we were round the back countless times but quality was pathetic

2nd half hull pushed a bit more and we struggled, getting done on the counter like that twice tho is unforgivable

The Hull manager did a job on us with the goal & their set up from our corner where they left Belloumi upfield, but placed him on the left touchline dragging MVE across to mark him, leaving a gaping hole on our right for Millar to exploit once the corner broke down. We really should have picked up on that earlier, as it wasn't the first corner they had adopted that tactic, before it worked out for them.

He should get the season, but he desperately needs to adjust the way we play to be more conservative
Its been proven the best form of defence isnt attack.

The team with best defence wins the Premier league (or has a better chance) not the best attacking teams.

Belloumi was left upfield at every set piece and every corner!

From watching the highlights yesterday, I saw distinct parallels between how he set his Everton team up.

Pleasing on the eye, loads of possession and naivety, with players pushing too far up the pitch, leaving the team exposed to counter attacks from teams who have very rapid players ( got to admit, I`d never heard of the Hull lad who scored before, but he was quick ).

The speed of transition from defence to attack in the Premier League is insane and if you haven`t got the players to cope with it, the only real answer is possession based low block, which isn`t Frank`s style ( as we all know ).

It`s how he adapts now.

Will he carry on with his footballing philosophy, potentially leaving the team vulnerable on the counter or will he have taken stock of the first two games and maybe play a bit deeper and play a more pragmatic style of footy ?
