I think the departure of Dr Claire-Marie Roberts could turn out to be a massive loss for the club.

She was Performance Director for just over 2 years and was involved in areas such as performance, preparation, psychology and recovery.

One thing that has stood out against Arsenal and Hull is how many of the players seem to be playing with fear and lacking confidence. Too often we take the easy option with a 10 yard sideways or backwards pass rather than trying something positive.

MVE is probably the most obvious example. He just does not look like the same player at the moment and seems to be playing with very little confidence.

Obviously, none of us know exactly what Roberts did day to day or how much influence she had on individual players, so I am not saying her departure is the reason for what we are seeing on the pitch, but confidence and mentality are obviously massively important at this level, and I wonder whether we have lost something since she left.

Maybe bringing in another top quality Performance Director or sports psychologist would help, particularly if some of the players are struggling with the pressure of the Premier League.

Hopefully the club is planning to replace Roberts with someone of similar quality, as that side of things could be really important this season.

that's exactly what you're saying...?

No, it isn't. I am saying that her influence could be badly missed and that her departure may be one of several factors.

Her time at the club coincided with us reaching the play offs in 2025 and winning the league in 2026. She is very highly regarded in her field, so losing someone of her quality from the performance set up could obviously have an impact.

That does not mean her departure is responsible for everything we are seeing now. But when several players look short of confidence, lack bravery on the ball and, at times, seem to be playing with fear, I don't think it is unreasonable to wonder whether losing someone with her expertise in performance and psychology has played some part.

I was thinking likewise yesterday but also that we’ll never know, unless in a few years time one of two of the players do an ‘evening with’ - like the Kelly & Doyle one week before last - and talks about this type of thing.

Delete all but paragraph 5

Did she have a direct replacement? Or was it a structural reorganisation?

I think the latter, she brought in the changes required and going forward other club staff will manage the functions she upgraded themselves.

Did cross my mind yesterday that she leaves and suddenly all of our players look like they've got absolutely no confidence whatsoever. Decent players that look like they've won a place in a Football Aid game.

We had games against Wolves and Man U with poorer teams than this that put up far more of a fight.

We look worse because we’re playing in the world’s best quality football division not because of some back room reorganisation.
