The Matt Grimes problem? (1 Viewer)

Most I've seen him run. But for us to stay up I don't think he has the legs. Frank the tank was covering too much space and wouldn't be able to last 90mins covering for grimes
Grimes covered 3.3km more than onyeka yesterday , but onyeka played 30 or so minutes less so grimes did work hard

Five tackles yesterday. More than anyone else in the side and five times as many as Onyeka. Much higher pass completion rate too. Run about all you like but if you’re not winning the ball and giving it away when you’ve got it I’m not sure you’re doing the job of a midfielder.

I'm not sure about Grimes in the Prem but I can't believe anyone can dig at any player after yesterday really. Better teams than us have and will go there and be pulled to pieces. 3 points against Brighton please.

He is not the long term answer but sadly there are some people who subscribe to group think and when the heard moves in realtion to a player it can become disproportionate quite quickly.

Its a tough one. If I'm honest I used him as scapegoat for the Hull performance/defeat.

In cold light of the day I'm going to back track and say I'm on the fence with Grimes this season. He has a massive role to play as Skipper (cos there is literally no one else).

I expect him to be rotated with Onyenka and and Yirenki gets up to speed with the league. And for what it worth i think Josh Eccles has a role to play too this season.

Exactly, it’s vibes though and some made their mind up before the season started. I’d prefer if he cut out the floaty crosses but even with those a lot of the time this is because the wide players aren’t doing their job, being braver and getting it in the box themselves. grimes is always available and never hides so ends up the one delivering the ball

Not been at his best so far but like others is getting used to pace etc of the prem. still has a really important role.

There were moments where Grimes could’ve done better but people need to have some perspective. We were playing what many consider to be the favourites to win the league behind Arsenal.

Overall, I think he and the whole team acquired themselves well. MVE was the only player in the 1st half who I thought was badly exposed and in the 2nd half he did recover.

Man City’s goal was a world class move, Guehi’s pass to Semenyo and the cross to Haaland was for a neutral, a great team goal to watch.

I think some may miss at least my worry about grimes. It’s not so much about the individual aside from criticism of his crosses and set pieces. It’s more tactical. I would never fault him for endeavour, work rate or even quality, but hey I guess we’ll see.

Grimes is fine. He gives the ball away less than Onyeka and Yirenkyi which is just as valuable as covering ground. He obviously won’t dictate like he did in the championship and has to play further forward a bit but he’ll be fine as an option in there.

He could realistically get phased out as season goes on. We still working out best 11 and he may find himself not an automatic pick. Swansea top of Championship might get interested…

Let’s give all the players time to adjust to this level. Too many fans willing to jump on one performance to support their hypothetical theories.

The Venn diagram of people who overreact to Matt Grimes and people who haven't a clue about anything is basically just a cricle.

I just found it bizarre watching Semenyo and still thinking of him as a Bristol City player. Phenomenal development

Sorry but this remains exactly the same as I wrote 2 weeks ago. He does not provide anything.

Needs dropping totally uninspiring in this league , sentiment has got him so far . But needs dropping along

I don’t want to ruin my memory of Grimes for us helping us win the Championship but he’s not a PL player. I don’t know what Lampard is seeing that we can’t.
If he starts in him one more time then Lampard needs sacking

I think it might only be because he is captain
Lets be honest, Kitching is the vice captain, and hes currently in South Yorkshire. Fuck the "captaincy sentiment". How long was Liam Kelly captain in the championship sitting on the bench? Michael Doyle in L1 was still captain but was too old to make the step up so sat out most of the season on the bench? Sentimet will get us nowhere.

I think it is not contradictory to say Grimes was amazing last year, but that those same qualities can’t be replicated in the PL. Different skills have different leaps from each league. What he brought to us in the championship he is not bringing now.

Robins was great at knowing where a players level was. So many got us to the next level then straight out. Said it since the 1st half against arsenal grimes looked like he was running in quick sand and was laughed at. In that formation he's too slow to the ball or react.

Biggest concern today was the players heads dropped also

Yeah his time is up and even moreso in this system. You’ve basically got 6 defenders on the pitch. Nowhere near strong enough or quick enough at this level.
