Sunderland Ratings (1 Viewer)

Overall, much better football, more attacking, but Sunderland should have had a couple of open play goals if their finishing had been better. The main difference was playing much further up the pitch as a team and being more ruthless with opportunities.

Rushworth 7 - much more steady display and looked like a good save from the other end

MvE 6 - A mixed bag, some very good stuff, but his positioning and reading of the game is terrifying to watch sometimes

Pinnock 7.5 good, not seen the pen replay though. Crazy to think he spend 6 senior seasons for Dulwich Hamlet

Mfuni 8 - quality, wish we could sign him. Would love to see him in centre mid. Between him and Pinnock the centre forward who missed his chance when through the two of them unmarked. Not sure who was culpable though

Da Silva 6 - steady

Torp 6 - thought he was decent, but it was the fact he played much further up the pitch than Grimes which was the big difference. Worked the keeper for the free kick

Yirenkyi 7 - starting to look accomplished and classy on the ball. Would have loved him to school, good to see him getting forwards

Sakamoto 7 - great to see him score, good, but not as good as last week

Ghobo 7 - great first half, some very good touches. His speed play with Rudoni and a few others was the big difference

Ruodni 7 - a goal and a threat, needs to release the ball quicker sometimes

Awoniyi 7 - a great goal, didn't do a whole lot else, but goals matter in this game

.......

BTA 4 - didn't make the most of the opportunities he had and gave the ball away badly a couple of times

Cherif 5 - didn't make the most of his opportunities, needs a bit more pace

Grimes 6 - steady

The PA 0 - absolutely murdered Ghost Town, needs replacing

Largely 7s and 8s. We beat the side bottom of the league at home. Forgot, if you don't agree with Saddlebrains on this forum you get labelled as "Mad".
Torp 6 🤣🤣🤣🤣
No idea what game you were watching, but Torp ran the midfield today and totaly out played Granit Xhaka.
If thats a 6 out of 10 performance then you really should get down to specksavers asap!!!

He was decent, but he was less involved than some other players and certainly didn't run/control the midfield. He helped make us more influential as a team simply by not playing as a 3rd centre back. Maybe I could have given him a 7, but neither is he The Messiah or a Naughty Boy...

I just dont see how anyone was below a 7. Probably the best performance of the season overall

You have to take into account we were playing the side bottom of the league who are tired after being in Europe this week. Was it a better performance than at Man City? We were more convincing today than the 4-1 win over Newcastle (which could have gone either way, despite the scoreline)

Of the starting 11 no one had a bad game, but MvE does worry me. He made some great tackles, but sometimes he seems completely unaware of where the player he is supposed to be marking actually is. Both him and Da Silva are way to slow to engage wide men cutting in, they are often in the penalty box by the time they are close enough to jockey/challenge. It was the same last season. One of the positives about Torp playing is Yirenkyi is getting further forewards too. However we will need to be tighter as a team to get something at Everton, which we really should be looking to do. Everton aren't great and have had a very easy start to the season. Big question for me is whether Thomas comes back in for Mfuni? I just think Mfuni is such a good player on the ball that we can't afford for him not to be in the starting 11. It was telling in that first 45 mins that having players like Mfuni, Torp, Rudoni, Da Silva, Ghobo who were all very good on the ball with a high passing accuracy - they were able to make things happen. But if you bring Thomas back in (which we should, as much for his attacking threat as anything) then who do you leave out if you want to start Mfuni? Nice problem to have though...
Apologies, I have digressed a little here!

They didn't play in Europe this week?

This will sum up this season so far. Last week was in the box and carsley was a guest of Dougs in the boardrooom, rumours about pressure on frank, same room today and we’re talking about giving lampsrd more money in January, this season changes week by week whatever happens just stick with the team and we’ll get results like today…fucking buzzing pusb

Just remember they rested players in the week for this game and we battered them we’re quick enough to slag the team of when we lose…they deserve every credit today, and as for lampard that took some bollocks to make that many changes…from now on no matter what just stick with them…rumour today is that we’ll be getting some help in January PUSB

Ok we lost our way a bit in the second half. But I think the fact we had to dig in and battle through it will be of great benefit to Frank Lampard, the coaches and the squad. We have learnt more from that performance than if Sunderland had just capitulated in the second half and we had won 4-0 or 5-0.

It was a good match-day squad performance today. We are starting to look like a squad with options rather than just a strong 11 of preferred starters.

Impressed by Taiwo's power run into the box and goal (heavily deflected though it was).
Tat's goal was excellent.
Torp was very good linking the midfield to attack, he worked himself a lot of space.
Grimes when he came on was good particularly his usual calmness on the ball.
Pinnock & Mfuni were both great positionally and being strong when they needed to be.
Yirenki covered a hell of a lot of ground!
MVE getting back to the player we know he can be.
Ghobo was a real threat he will get a few goals and assists before long for sure.

Finally, 3 pts what a relief.

Simms not in the squad because he won’t sign a new contract…

I actually have quite a bit of sympathy for Simms. He signed just before Wright, probably on the thinking he'd get plenty of games as a starter. And yet the only time he's really been given a chance to start has been when Wright is injured. And, it seems no matter how well Simms has performed in those spells, as soon as Wright is fit again, Simms gets put back on the bench.

I think he's entitled to be a bit disappointed with how things have worked out, in fairness.

Rushworths body language was back to normal today. More importantly, his distribution and handling were too. Held some tricky ones and obviously the ping for the first goal 👌

Torp was really good in the middle.

it’s mad to think that centre half partnership is on paper our 3rd+4th choice. Both were superb.

Really enjoyable game PUSB

Awoniyi's goal was Regis-esque. Made all the better as it started by putting O'Nein on his arse.

For me the long running Simms debate is remarkably simple. As an all round CF he’s not as good as Wright, Awoniyi or Cherif. Lampard has it right in my opinion.

And now for a brief period community singing.

Saw Cov Live only gave Ghobo a 6.5 rating. They must have been watching a different game as he was at least a 7 easy
The best is yet to come but my God was it refreshing to have someone with his technical ability there. The ball actually stuck for a change.

Yeah, you can see the levels of technical ability between certain players. Won't name them, as it's pointless. Seems so trivial but the ability to control a ball on a sixpence in any given direction is vital to give themselves an extra second to make the next move. Gboho has that. As do players like Rudoni, Dasilva & Tats - hence why they are excelling at this level now.

Very good performance helped by the changes and different approach tactically as well. More fluidity, positive, faster pace and calculated risks in our play, rather than the very safe, cautious, side to side approach against Fulham. It helped that Sunderland were quite open too, rather than Fulham's possession style. Glad Lampard made changes to give players a chance, players left out / not in the 11 will push hard in training to get into the team, very healthy competition.

I agree with the above posts, centre backs superb, Torp & Yirenkyi a good midfield combination on the day, Awoniyi with a good number 9's goal, Sakamoto proving he's good enough for the level, Rushworth solid. Good day all round 🩵

I think they wanted / tried to move him on in the summer. From all accounts accepted an offer on deadline day from Burnley, which Simms rejected. I would assume the £7-10 million we would have recouped there may of helped towards another signing. Now we run the real risk of him running down his contract, and I don't think anyone could blame him (Simms). He doesn't do enough off the ball clearly for Frank, but would of been the better choice on Saturday than Cheriff. With Haji back soon, I don't think he'll appear again this year.
