He isn't shit, just inexperienced and very rusty.

We're not going to keep going at 3+ goals per game to cover it.

I’m going to get stick for this but I don’t really think rushworth was the main problem for the goals today. The first was a very powerful shot that would have been hard to hold onto and the second it’s more how he positioned the wall, but from what I understand Oxford were clever with it. I would be looking at the fouls we gave away tbh.

I think we have to be slightly careful of holding the keeper responsible everytime it goes into the net. Ultimately they are the last line of defence so will always be seen as responsible in some way. Collins to me was a clearer example of someone who game after game made outright mistakes that cost us. I would give rushworth more time as I don’t think a keeper is something you can chop and change as easily.

He can kick a ball. Big whoop, how about saving one every now and then

Can anyone tell me so far how he is better than Wilson in keeping the ball out?

My worry is, Brighton opted to send him to us over Rangers. Which, one would assume, comes with an expectation of a certain amount of game time. If that game time isnt met, surely they recall him? And with Collins now off to Burton, that leaves us with Wilson and no back up/Bell as back up. We're in a shit situation, but one we've backed ourselves in to. Everyone on here said what we needed was a safe pair of hands. A decent, proven keeper. What we got, was rawness with the odd clanger thrown in to boot. And whether we like it or not, until Dovin is back, we either need to hope he comes good, or we're gonna need a hell of a second half of the season playing catch-up again.

His positioning has been woeful.
"Could" attribute every goal conceded to Carl.
Except the Derby penalty. Didn't like his part in their 1st & 3rd...QPR & again particularly 2nd today.

You could.argue he wasmt great for the penalty either. Granted, you don't expect a keeper to save a pen, but he was sold and dived too early, giving a free shot. Just saying

But that’s why we needed to replace Wilson. Instead we’ve replaced “could have done better Wilson” to “could have done better Rushworth” I’m yet to see what he’s better at

100 % agree..the first goal today took a wicked skidded bounce whilst struck powerfully was a good stop almost took it in his face was off his chest.

2nd one also agree maybe he coukd have done better. But woukdnt say he was atrocious like many have over reacted.

I said similar earlier on the match day thread. People are defending Rushworth as "he's better than Collins". But that still doesn't mean he's good. We're settling for average, just because he's better than shit.
Its like knowing you could go to Disney land for a holiday, but instead choose Blackpool Pleasure Beach, simply because you think its better than Ingoldmells. Its ridiculous!

Rushworth has been disappointing.

Came with a great reputation and off the back of a £5m rejected bid. So expectations were high and so far it’s a struggle to see why.

Positioning, ability to command his box, shot stopping are all poor, and even his distribution - especially considering he’s a modern sweeper keeper - is underwhelming.

However, he’s been injured for a while and is naturally not fully at game pace yet, mentally as well as physically. And is not helped by a defence who are error prone, with average positioning skills.

I maintain he’ll come good, but he needs to turn it around quickly before he loses confidence, and it’ll be a downward spiral at that point.

I think he will welcome the break, to work on commanding his area and organising the defence

The first 5 or so games from Dovin last season were a bit shaky too weren’t they? Once he settled it became clear that he was a very good GK at this level.

Rushworth really highly rated by fans at Swansea. Think he just needs some time to settle and it isn’t fair to judge until after 10/15 games.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet, probably has.

They've had nothing else to cheer

This isn't responding to you but Brighton themselves didn't confirm that a bid had been made and rejected

Carl Rushworth joins Coventry City on loan

Rushworth hasn’t been at the level expected so far but people seemingly just love to forget how bad Wilson actually is (which is amazing considering he played on Tuesday and was honking).

First goal today is unlucky because it’s a great strike that bounces right in front of him. He has to save the second one but also why’s Bobby turning away from it on the end of the wall?

Think people have already said, we saw similar shouts with Dovin at the start of last season, let’s just give the lad more than 4 games.

Keepers are a strange one as you essentially need 1x excellent GK and either 1x average GK happy to sit on the bench until needed or 1x excellent GK that is happy to fight for the no 1 spot or happy to sit on the bench. There's not many that fit the latter category

Viktor Johansson was available last season which was an achievable transfer but he fits into the 1x excellent GK category and not sure he would've suited; he wants no 1 all the time and he's doing well at Stoke at the moment

From what I've seen I'm not convinced by Rushworth but Wilson is no better. Looking forward to when Dovin is back!

Don't expect Dovin to come back firing on all cylinders, I would hope he can get up to speed in the FA cup which is around the right time, assuming we can get through.

Sorry, but he was badly at fault for the second goal. If your keeper positoned a wall so poorly playing Sunday League he would rightly get pelters, and if Wilson had done the same he would have been slaughtered on here. It was clear what Brannagan was going to try to do and he made it easy for him, with his shot not even going in the corner, but a good yard from the post.

Given the mistakes he also has in him Wilson is not a viable alternative so we have to stick with him, but we really need Rushworth to buck his ideas up.

The first goes straight through the gap in the wall past Torp as well, looking at the extended highlights. There shouldn't be a gap in the wall and that's Rushworth's problem!

Dovin was a bit suss at times last season.

Turning to Doug’s words a few months back about developing loan players on behalf of other clubs, one could tolerate allowing a 22 year old that was on a permanent contract to have some “he’ll learn from it” moments.

If Rushworth is a loan player, who we couldn’t buy for 5.5m, then how much learning leeway do we afford him? If there’s a buy out option then that might be a different story, but a straight loan whilst Dovin recovers?

I’m sure one of the top prem teams have a 3rd choice international class goalie at 30 odd years old with bags of experience we could bring in to do a job or even an older one who could be a support type coach to our 38year old coach.

Man City, for example, have:

Trafford
Ederson
Bettenelli (33)
Ortega (32)

In their first team squad. Ok. Probably need three of those but probs out of our league to even get one.

Chelsea have 3.

Slight chance Lampard can pull strings.

That’s one option or go get some top scandi keeper for a couple of million.

Or some 37 year old top international looking for a player coach role.

Not sure I’m confident that Rushworth on loan is the answer on current showings.

Not sure Aled is the answer. Frank should tell Cech to stop pucking about and (see what I did there) get up to Ryton (as a coach, although I’d have picked him ahead of Collins)

Why stop there? Need to get Drogba in as shooting coach, Arjen Robben as the drifting-in-off-the-wing coach, Roman Abramovich as financial coach, and John Terry as kitman.

No no. Don’t be churlish.

It looks like we have a problem with our keeper coaching. I merely suggested that one of the best goalkeepers in the past 20 years might pick up an SOS from Frank Lampard.

Give a better suggestion or are we sticking with sass?

I quite like the sass tbh, but how about someone with some experience of being a GK coach?
