Hamer was signed for the sentiment (2 Viewers)

I assumed he was signed for his ability to quickly launch counter attacks from deep, but that's not what he's being asked to do. Counter attacking at pace is still what I think these players should be best at, and it shouldn't mean too much of a tactical adjustment.

We have forwards who do better chasing onto things, and players further down with decent passing range. There's stuff we could work with there and have Hamer involved.

He was crap, no idea what sort of player he's supposed to be or where his best position is supposed to be.

He was twice the player when he left us in 2023
Perhaps if Mr Lampard played him in the position he played in during his first stint with us we may see the best of him

Looking through our signings this summer, taking into account price and ability to play here and now, Hamer is far from the most puzzling one. In fact, I’d say he was one of the better ones.

The reactions to different players’ performances last night perhaps highlights the confusion around the club generally. Hamer certainly wasn’t brilliant, or even particularly good, but he did look to make passes that broke the lines and looks closer to Premier League quality than many in the team.

Hamer and indeed Eccles are not no.10s. At Championship level they can do a good job there but not at the elite level. They are natural no.6 players, Eccles always was and Hamer when younger was more of an 8 but now definitely will be far better as a 6. He has all the attributes.
I think Hamer was a smart signing for the reasons you say. But we have to use him (and Eccles Torp Yirenkyi Onyeka) in their correct positions in midfield.

Lol - still 4 games in and Lampard is considering his options.

Yea, if he plays he should be deep lying not as an auxiliary striker.

In fact 4-4-2 off the ball really leaves us light on the middle.

Everyone is raving about Yirenkyi, and he obviously has ability, but so far 27 million for him looks madness. So far we have seen he can run around alot but not much else. He clearly can put a tackle in and pick a pass but so far he has misplaced most passes and missed most tackles and looks very raw and inexperienced which is to be expected at his age but for 27 million quid surely we needed someone more of a finished article. Onyeka so far looks totally out of his depth and its clear why Brentford got rid.

Lampard in his presser today was suggesting that he does know his best team, but he's been making tweaks to suit the opposition (or WTTE). He probably isn't going to openly say 'I don't know my best team', but that's really how it looks from the outside.

I mean that presser is a massive worry. Basically admitting he doesnt think we are good enough to play on our terms so is picking tactics on an ad hoc basis. Shocking position to be in.

If he still considers Grimes part of his best team then i'd like to tell him that he, in fact, doesn't know his best team.

I’d say he was completely unproven and very speculative at the price. What I’ve seen so far hasn’t really changed my position at the start of the year which was “I don’t know, let’s see”

But other midfield options have equal or greater drawbacks, and some of these I am sure about (ie they’re not good enough) so I’d start him for now.

I’ve also read people saying that Gboho and Cherif showed promising signs last night, similar to early comments about Tchouana.

Gboho I didn’t get any further information either way on, one way or another. Not enough to be encouraged or dismissive, I just haven’t seen enough.

Cherif got in some good positions, but looked incredibly raw and doesn’t seem a natural finisher. Again, too early to say, but a big punt at the price

He still considers BTA worthy of bringing off the bench at this level.

That’s exactly what I thought he looked the age of his shirt number. Look at McGinn whose two years older and his energy versus hamer
For £2.75 million McGinn has to be one of the all-time great Premier League buys. He was outstanding again last night, and noticeable that he wants to play every game and lead by example.

We should play "our" team. We are expected to go straight back down so at least do it "our way" and give it a go. Get rid of the fear, there shouldn't be any because nothing is expected of us, and let's see what happens.

Id have Torp ahead of Yirenkyi. Definitely a case though that Yirenkyi ahead of Onyeka as an 8 although with Onyeka i wonder if he is more a 6 at this level. But we have been playing him as a box to box midfielder since he came to the club.
If Yirenkyi plays it would have to be with Grimes or Hamer or a fit Eccles whose remit is to just screen the back 4 and not venture forward at all, sort of the QB role. Maybe Onyeka could play that role? Cant play Torp and Yirenkyi together as we would be too open.
That midfield is a mess at the moment and Lampard needs to work out the best individual roles for each of them and get them playing as a unit. They look lost at the moment tactically

Totally agree. I feel the players are being inhibited from playing their natural games.

he wasnt bought in the prem

You're being rather pedantic now. He only played 1 season in the Championship. Still rates as one of the great buys.
No Im not haha how can he be one of the greatest ever premier league buys if he wasnt bought in the prem

Hamer looked ok and teamed up with Torp quite well! £6 million looks a steal compared to £20 Million + that we have shelled out for some of the players still learning to play in the premier league if you ask me!

Which of the £20m players does hamer look a steal compared to

No easy answers. Torp has great delivery, but I worry about his pace and general physicality, and more particularly he doesn’t have quick feet. So he’s vulnerable both to the press in possession and being passed around or overrun when out of it.

We need at least 2 high energy, physical players in there alongside Hamer / Rudoni / Torp whatever is your preference.

With the midfield personnel we have, to be effective there we would probably need to find some sort of 4-2-2-2 formation, but we’ve bought badly elsewhere to facilitate that. Lampard isn’t really a tactical coach, so much as a man manager and player developer, which he’s been good at, and when the talent is there, that can be very effective. But when the basic talent level isn’t particularly high, you need a clear playing style, organisation and lots of round pegs in round holes.

It’s difficult to see what can be done, which is what I said before the season when I thought we’d struggle, but five weeks ago that was heresy to some.

Hopefully, I will be proved wrong. Having expected a struggle, I think I’m a lot calmer about things then most at the moment.

That’s one of those easy warm up questions they have on TV quizzes that you can’t get wrong. There’s no real drama saying you can’t think of a sensible answer
Hes been fucking pish. If he hadnt been here years ago we would have lal thought wtf have we signed

I wouldn’t say he’s been particularly good, though has tried to break lines with his passing and shown glimpses. Nor am I saying I would have signed him.

But you ridiculed the other poster’s view which presumably means that you are convinced that each of the big money signings are definitely £15m plus players, being the typical premium paid over the Hamer fee.

You are obviously pretty pleased with all 5 of these signings, and they will no doubt help us climb the league.

Me, I was in the box that I thought they looked pretty speculative, and thought we’d struggle as a result. When talking about Ipswich’s business, you seemed to be in the same boat and even quoted agreement with me as a sensible, balanced poster. You’ve had a new wave of confidence in our big money signings, and I admire your confidence.

I think they have significantly more potential to help us climb the leagues. they are also a lot younger and in a lot better physical condition.

Youre on another planet then
Why! because i think the money we paid for some of the players excessive as they are not! Premier league ready and we had our trousers pulled down with Tachouna .
£6 million for Hamer sounds about right to me.

Ok, what have you seen so far in Tchouana and Cherif to say that. Not that they might not be better than Hamer - I’m not saying they’re not, but that they are worth a £15m premium over Hamer and have SIGNIFICANTLY more potential to help us climb the leagues. Serious question?

They actually look like they can run.

Probably! But I still think £20 million+ is too much when you consider we paid £9 million for Hadji Wright from a Top Turkish team.
