Looking through our signings this summer, taking into account price and ability to play here and now, Hamer is far from the most puzzling one. In fact, I’d say he was one of the better ones.

The reactions to different players’ performances last night perhaps highlights the confusion around the club generally. Hamer certainly wasn’t brilliant, or even particularly good, but he did look to make passes that broke the lines and looks closer to Premier League quality than many in the team.

Lampard isn’t really a tactical coach, so much as a man manager and player developer, which he’s been good at, and when the talent is there, that can be very effective. But when the basic talent level isn’t particularly high, you need a clear playing style, organisation and lots of round pegs in round holes.

If his strength is his man management then the way he's handled Simms has been absolutely shocking and he's managed to take a team that should have been brimming with confidence after winning the Championship by a country mile and turned them into a set of meek scaredy-cats who feel they're imposters in the Premier League who have barely kicked a football before.

Hamer is someone who you can bring on in the last 20 minutes of the game that can change it (hopefully be in our favour). He can score some amazing goals as we all know, and he can make a pass between the opposition defenders if the attackers are willing to run. He wasn't signed to start and I think we all know that.
If the worst-case scenario happens and we get relegated, we have a fantastic player in the squad who (when fit) will tear the championship apart as we all know

Not every player has pace to burn many players use what's between their ears I know it was many years ago but Bobby Moore was one of the best players i have ever seen but pace was not one of his best attributes he read the game so well.As for Hamer I thought he played the game he was asked to play not playing deeper and picking a pass to someone on the run.I'd be interested to know how much ground he covered in the game his tracking back one time towards the end of the game put some others to shame.

He was our cheapest fee of the window by far, if his name wasn’t Hamer expectations would be much lower.

Questions about his fitness, body type, and tactics are asked and answered, but you specifically mentioned ball watching earlier in the thread. I'm probably guilty of that on occasion.

I think he was an accounting tidy up in reality, covering our expenditure from when he, I don't mind him but you do have to question the effect on the dressing room of the returning hero, anyway he's here now and he has to fight for his place shouldn't be too hard in reality,who knows if torps wanted by someone else in the future,we should stick with him Torp that is. who knows Gus may be the unintended hero

I thought Hamer was good in the first half vs Villa. He's got the ability to
A.) Unlock a defence with a key pass that others on our team can't see
B.) Make something happen out of nothing

He needs to be played, he has that quality. To be writing him off after zero PL starts is pretty moronic. He was Sheffield Utds best player in the PL unpacking defences. This is nothing to do with sentiment, it's about playing your most talented players. Just needs to be playing in the position Yirenkyi had vs Villa.

I also think he could play the Grimes role well, he's also incredibly quick over 10 yards and is physically very strong for his size.
