Match Thread Coventry City vs Brighton & Hove Albion FC (H) - Match Thread - Sun 13th September (2pm KO) (1 Viewer)

Watched the MOTD coverage last night, desperate to come away with any kind of positive.

Our problems are summed up thusly: The squad we have at our disposal has to be at 100% capacity at all times to carve out basic chances or make rudimentary defending decisions, our oppositions have to be at 50% to score. This is a league where every indecision, every hesitation, every mistake is punished ruthlessly and where you pay for every chance you don't take.

Grimes was dropping far too deep the entire game and giving their midfielders acres of room to essentially do whatever they wanted in their own time, and reacting rather than anticipating. All three of our CBs, having been pretty great against Man City, let us down at various points. EMC fluffed two decent chances.

The MOTD pundits, for what little it's worth, were fairly pragmatic in their analysis and pointed out that in certain passages of play we looked fluid and confident. But what good is that, ultimately?

I’m impressed you could manage watching it all again to be honest.

Did anyone else receive loads of messages from their non CCFC supporting mates? Mine weren't even really taking the piss, it was just pity. We are pitied already.

Frank set the tone with his words pre match
Yes! Robins used to try and sell us as underdogs all the time, the problem is it didn't fucking wash after he was allowed to assemble an expensive squad. I absolutely loved how Lampard came in and talked us up so much, talked about the quality of our players. In the Prem so far he's gone full Robins, needs to stick his chest out a bit or he'll go the same way.

Well with the words Doug had with Dean apparently they’re going to have to get their shit together quickly.

Who gives a rats ass what anyone else thinks anyway.
Well if everyone else basically thinks you are shit but so shit it's not even worth gentle mocking then its not a great look is it. Over to Lampard to ensure we don't become a total laughing stock. Drop his favourites, play his new players and see what happens. It cannot be any worse and at least he can blame Dean Austin if its still shit then.

There was a Brighton fan sat behind me in the BS bar, assume he was in one of the boxes. He let out a little cheer when they scored their first which he did well to mute IMO, but spent the 2nd half trying to console his friend who was city fan. The worst part was him moaning when Awonyi was sent off as it killed the game.

How embarrassing is it to have a Premier League opponent view us that way.

One of my best mates is a Liverpool fan (from Liverpool at least so a bona fide one rather than a standard plastic), his message was simply ‘football hug’.

A few Brighton fans I know actually apologised at full time, which is fucking embarrassing.

Absolutely. He needs to change things. But if we’re worried about anyone else’s perception of us we’re going to have a seriously hard time.

That result is a marker to the rest of the league that one of the bottom 3 is already nailed on.

I don't care when it obviously comes from a place of cope like it ended up being for our friends at Ipswich when we romped the league over them last season. I care when we are viewed like a 3 legged dog who's struggling to be adopted.

“Should be beating Brighton” laughable
So where are we picking up points then? If we're classing the likes of Arsenal & Man City as 'free hits' and the idea of beating Brighton, who only won 5 away games in total last season with their biggest winning margin being 2 goals, is laughable are we just resigning ourselves to beating Derby's record?

I was expecting a relegation fight, what I wasn't expecting was to be embarrassed and be a laughing stock and if we're not careful that will be what happens. If we do end up being relegated lets at least go down with a fight, not roll over for mid-table sides.

It's your mates who sound like the embarrassing ones, how cringe

We just look slow and lack passing quality and sharpness. Especially down the centre of the pitch. Brighton looked nimble and assertive.
Frank has gone for big physical types rather than ball players.
Torp and Hamer aren't the quickest either.

At this point we can't be playing 8 defensive players at home. I'd rather have another midfielder in than 3 centre backs. We're never that solid at the back whatever and Rushworth is better with more space around him.

A game plan of sitting off and letting the opposition have all the space and possession will do that.
Sorry to jump in here, but we didn’t just sit in against Chelsea. We mixed our press up, sometimes pressing them in their own box to force an error, then we had a lot of mid block and some low block to hit them on the counter.

Jakirovic mixes up his game plan depending on who we are playing, he saw that our best chance of getting something out of the game was to take advantage of Chelsea’s defensive frailties. You don’t get this playing a low block for 90mins.

Bully for you then.

Oh, look at us, we can score goals and win/draw the occasional game of football. Grow up lads

Today wasn’t just about today. FFS I’m making myself angry again. Need a response on Wednesday not another reserve outing now.
Trouble is I could see FL putting out the same side in the cup to get the last game out of the system, Villa to play a weakened side and we end up with a half decent performance/result and he thinks it's fine again. So we then enter the Forest game thinking it's sorted and get embarrassed again.

I'm actually not against that. Some (many) of the wages in Premier League football are so obscene they're offensive.
I agree entirely and at some point the bubble will burst.

But it doesn't change the fact that if you're not willing to go along with that madness you're going to end up with a poor squad.

If we still have 0 goals and 0 points by the break I’d be having serious words.
Like what? That would cause a complete breakdown if \DK effectively threatens Frank. If you need 'serious words', I'd walk if I was Frank. Who do you want us to get in? Sean Dyche? What DK needs is a pair of cojones and stay supportive. You might have the best manager in the world as a newly promoted club, and still get relegated in this league. Everybody praising Hull and Ipswich - let's see where they end up at the end of the season. We really need to stay together as a fanbase, but judging by a few posters on here, we appear to be quick to 'crumble' and round on our own team and club.

 - I was just responding to the statement
that the reason we cover more distance is that we sat off Chelsea, which wasn’t the case.

Not here gloating, just taking an interest in a fellow promoted team. If you could guarantee us safety, I’d be cheering you guys on as well, unfortunately we’re both looking for 3 teams to finish above, which pits us against each other.

My comment was actually about our own gameplan of sitting off and conceding lots of space. Which should have been clear from what I was responding to.

The worst part about this awful start is Hull fans coming on to offer pointers. It’s taking the absolute piss.
