Chief science guy referring to reasonable worse case scenario of 80%. Can’t say what a lower amount would be. Will need to keep monitoring the data.

I really do think we are the experts of this and we are playing the long term immunity game to avoid reinfection. I’m pretty happy with the honesty and transparency and expert opinions rather than government managing through politics

Spot on Pete. All I will say (again) is nobody knows which policies are right or wrong, as we are all in unchartered waters. people who are saying Johnson’s not leading though are massively missing the point....of course he is, he’s taking the a decision which is currently (I say that as they will change tack at a certain time) going against the grain as he thinks it’s the right thing to do for the country.

Easiest thing for him is ignore his medical advisors and to close schools and gatherings now. what nobody has answered is WTF happens to health/social care system if/when schools are closed for a prolonged period and the workers are possibly having to stop at home to look after their kids...when kids are at minimal risk and the elderly and infirm are at higher risk ???

This is an extremely complex situation (way over my head) where every action needs to be weighed up.

Ps I wouldn’t take the prime ministers job for a million quid !

*scientific advisors not medical advisors. This is based on psychology not epidemiology.

Personally I’d rather we went with the hard sciences here. He’s not saying don’t close the schools, any teacher will tel you that’s already in planning. He’s saying not yet because his shrinks think people will get bored and stop following advice.

You know claiming that Chris Whitty consultant physician, public health doctor and noted epidemiologist in fact does know anything about epidemiology? Wow

Chief Medical Officer (Whitty) and Chief Scientific Adviser (Vallance), but a whole bunch of experts in epidemiological modelling also involved - as well as behavioural psychologists. I believe they are providing the right collective evidence to enable the government to act as best as the data suggest.
My missus said last night it should be like kids having chickenpox parties. That is the only way to get the level immunity up. Children of school age appear (for the most part) to be virtually asymptomatic, and certainly don't contribute to the hospitalised population. The problem comes, i suppose, when they go to grandma's ...

Kids also don’t tend to listen to government advice of hygiene and social distancing.

Sorry, but this “let it rip” gamble we are taking makes me nervous. We could be talking about 1 in 5 over 70s dying to get this “herd immunity” and it blows my mind that because it’s Boris saying sacrifice your granny people are up for it. Jesus just a couple of days ago it was leftie fake news that Boris would consider this now its a great plan based on medical advice!

The science doesn’t change from country to country. The medical community that aren’t employed by Boris are all saying take it more seriously. Civil servants are at the behest of politicians at the end of the day.

or if they have an underlying health problem like asthma.
Given you're defending Johnson,. what's your take on him claiming to have shook hands with corona virus patients when he didn't? Good leadership?

edit: question about Johnson aimed at Steve.

They can close the schools if they want but teachers should still be able to attend other people are having to try to carry on we had two cases at work last night, they didn’t say close the building we had to work on.

We've ran out of sanitizer gel and barrier cream all ready, told by union that all the offices have been buying it, why the fuck would an office buy barrier cream, fucking plebs!

Toilet rolls are still going crazy in a normal trailer you might normally get 100 packs last night single trailers were having 300 to 400 packs.

We are British, you see. We are civilised, we know better than you. We have the best experts and the best tea and we don't speak in silly languages. And if a few pesky old people have to go, then they'll jolly well have to take it on the chin old chap.

Another picture with no context. There us no one size fits all plan for epidemiology.

I'm not panicking, I don't even live there. Pointing out the stupidity of not taking any measures at all is a very different thing.

Although for once i agree that its strange we haven't taken any measures, we need to follow the medics and science as Boris has said the timing will be key

If kids are off , parents need to be off which could result in grandparents looking after the kids.... imagine how dangerous that is

Its not as dangerous as having them at school all day mixing with hundreds of people, then seeing their parents & grandparents- all this nonsense about kids infecting all the grandparents while off school is bizarre.

Boris also said that its ok to go to hospital and personally shake hands with all the Coronavirus patients, you ok with that scientific advice as well?

Remove this chip from ya shoulder and put politics to one side for once! Its not just Boris its his advisers and senior medics/scientists saying what we should be doing and how timing is key.....

I have said its odd we haven't really done much, however you are deluded if you think grandparents won't get infected with kids being off school!!! Parents can't afford to take time off so who will look after the kids??

I heard the comment and I thought he said he’d shaken hands with ‘everybody in a hospital’ where there were corona victims. I honestly took that he had shaken hands with people working in that hospital not that he’d shaken hands with every single patient ! Most press jumped on it

Ps was that the hospital he visited at 1am in the morning ?

just to clarify though I wouldn’t have said those comments full stop.

We're taking a different approach to things, it was an honest press conference, gave us the reasoning behind why they're doing things, I didn't agree and felt we could/should have done so more, but I understand why we've taken the approach we have.

It’s not just schools though. Off the top of my head: cancel uni and move it online, ask employers to allow home working where possible, give public buildings more money to hire extra cleaning staff, encourage home delivery of shopping/food (tax breaks?), discourage non essential large gatherings. None would impact the economy like school closures or lockdowns, but all would surely help prevent the spread.

What do you think about the herd immunity argument? That would mean 60%??? And you can do the rather large figures

As I said on the other thread. It’s more the impact of parents not being at work for prolonged periods to look after kids (those parents with jobs in health care, social care, police, food shops etc etc. If they’re going to be closed for weeks (or longer) what happens to then ? The people that need looking after aren’t potentially getting what they need because schools are closed

This is why I’d like to see funding to have schools properly cleaned nightly maybe even extra staffing to temporarily reduce class sizes or offer more support to student hygiene in the day. Get some high quality online resources out there for kids that will self isolate and encourage schools to send students home ill for symptoms and suspend any attendance penalties on the school.

It’s this binary all or nothing approach I don’t agree with. Even with this strategy there’s action they could take that would make people who don’t exactly have 100% trust in the current government more comfortable.

You are panicking. I've read through a lot of your posts on this subject, and you, my friend, are panicking. If there turns out to be a right or wrong approach to this whole mess, then it will only be known after the event - probably years afterwards, and even then I guarantee you the experts will still not agree. So, right now, if you don't mind, I'll stick with the reasoned approach outlined yesterday by this country's chief medical officer and chief scientific officer and ignore the panicked gut instinct of an anonymous SBT poster. If you think what they are saying is some sort of conspiracy, then heaven help us all.

panic
/ˈpanɪk'/
noun
  1. sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behaviour.

very good shout. I can’t disagree. I’ve heard talk about online teaching which could happen in due course

Ps there is no doubt they will close schools/ban larger social gatherings but just not yet.

Yes maybe you're right, after all the country's Prime Minister has a great track record of always doing whats right, of being clear and transparent and always has the very best & most ethical advisors around him.
