I really do think we are the experts of this and we are playing the long term immunity game to avoid reinfection. I’m pretty happy with the honesty and transparency and expert opinions rather than government managing through politics
Spot on Pete. All I will say (again) is nobody knows which policies are right or wrong, as we are all in unchartered waters. people who are saying Johnson’s not leading though are massively missing the point....of course he is, he’s taking the a decision which is currently (I say that as they will change tack at a certain time) going against the grain as he thinks it’s the right thing to do for the country.
Easiest thing for him is ignore his medical advisors and to close schools and gatherings now. what nobody has answered is WTF happens to health/social care system if/when schools are closed for a prolonged period and the workers are possibly having to stop at home to look after their kids...when kids are at minimal risk and the elderly and infirm are at higher risk ???
This is an extremely complex situation (way over my head) where every action needs to be weighed up.

You know claiming that Chris Whitty consultant physician, public health doctor and noted epidemiologist in fact does know anything about epidemiology? Wow*scientific advisors not medical advisors. This is based on psychology not epidemiology.
Personally I’d rather we went with the hard sciences here. He’s not saying don’t close the schools, any teacher will tel you that’s already in planning. He’s saying not yet because his shrinks think people will get bored and stop following advice.

My missus said last night it should be like kids having chickenpox parties. That is the only way to get the level immunity up. Children of school age appear (for the most part) to be virtually asymptomatic, and certainly don't contribute to the hospitalised population. The problem comes, i suppose, when they go to grandma's ...

No there are not, many agree with it.Kids also don’t tend to listen to government advice of hygiene and social distancing.
Sorry, but this “let it rip” gamble we are taking makes me nervous. We could be talking about 1 in 5 over 70s dying to get this “herd immunity” and it blows my mind that because it’s Boris saying sacrifice your granny people are up for it. Jesus just a couple of days ago it was leftie fake news that Boris would consider this now its a great plan based on medical advice!
The science doesn’t change from country to country. The medical community that aren’t employed by Boris are all saying take it more seriously. Civil servants are at the behest of politicians at the end of the day.

Its not as dangerous as having them at school all day mixing with hundreds of people, then seeing their parents & grandparents- all this nonsense about kids infecting all the grandparents while off school is bizarre.
Boris also said that its ok to go to hospital and personally shake hands with all the Coronavirus patients, you ok with that scientific advice as well?
or if they have an underlying health problem like asthma.

We're taking a different approach to things, it was an honest press conference, gave us the reasoning behind why they're doing things, I didn't agree and felt we could/should have done so more, but I understand why we've taken the approach we have.

That’s trueIt’s not just schools though. Off the top of my head: cancel uni and move it online, ask employers to allow home working where possible, give public buildings more money to hire extra cleaning staff, encourage home delivery of shopping/food (tax breaks?), discourage non essential large gatherings. None would impact the economy like school closures or lockdowns, but all would surely help prevent the spread.
As I said on the other thread. It’s more the impact of parents not being at work for prolonged periods to look after kids (those parents with jobs in health care, social care, police, food shops etc etc. If they’re going to be closed for weeks (or longer) what happens to then ? The people that need looking after aren’t because schools are closed

Get some high quality online resources out there for kids that will self isolate and encourage schools to send students home ill for symptoms and suspend any attendance penalties on the school.
It’s this binary all or nothing approach I don’t agree with. Even with this strategy there’s action they could take that would make people who don’t exactly have 100% trust in the current government more comfortable.

You are panicking. I've read through a lot of your posts on this subject, and you, my friend, are panicking. If there turns out to be a right or wrong approach to this whole mess, then it will only be known after the event - probably years afterwards, and even then I guarantee you the experts will still not agree. So, right now, if you don't mind, I'll stick with the reasoned approach outlined yesterday by this country's chief medical officer and chief scientific officer and ignore the panicked gut instinct of an anonymous SBT poster. If you think what they are saying is some sort of conspiracy, then heaven help us all.
