Baseball

I think they’ve spent a lot of money with long contracts… like the Yankees on those players, the money they’re paying Zach Wheeler is mental for what he is.

I’ve always been a fan of Bryce Harper - but he’s one who also disappears when it matters
Yep, they all wilt when the pressure is on. Especially the dreadful Trea Turner, who’s still got 7 years of his $300 million contract left.. Could be some barren years ahead 😄

Brewers playing some ball!

Rays game moved to 6pm (BST) today due to weather, so at least i can watch it! (y)

"Lets go Rays!!"

Thats miniscule the mets still have 14 years left on Juan Soto's £760m contract.

The Phillies also have the problem that they've got to beat The Dodgers, the Padres, The Braves and now the Brewers to get to a World Series

I used to watch a bit of baseball, followed the Mets in the David Wright era but I've fallen away over the last 10 years or so.

I'm still mesmerised by Shohei Ohtani.

When I watched baseball, it was a huge thing if a pitcher got a home run, and a novelty.

Ohtani's ability to be elite at pitching and batting is crazy and must make him one of the best sportsmen of all time.

I was just looking this up. Apparently pitchers used to bat but are not really required to do so no more? Ohtani is the closest thing baseball has to an 'all-rounder' apparently?

It's an odd one, but at least when I used to watch it, the 2 different leagues had different rules. In the National League, the pitcher would bat, and in the American League, they had designated hitters, who wouldn't play in the field but would just bat in place of the pitcher. It seems the NL also uses the DH now as of 2022.

All-rounders were never a thing, really. When I watched, there was a guy called Rick Ankiel who switched from pitcher to batter, but that was incredibly rare, and he never did both at the same time.
