Arsenal tickets (1 Viewer)

Yes, I do. There has to be an arbitary number of points awarded. Are you saying the Club should have a mileage chart and work out points depending on how far away a game is? That's nonsense. It would have to happen to a weekend game then too?

The system is simple. I've already decided I'm not going to Plymouth away, so it's an opportunity for someone lower down to grab the tickets. And, they'll get 20 points.
Ok fair enough, we all have our views

And getting to and from some cities midweek is easier than others, even though they may be further away.

Why do people think the raw point numbers actually matter? e.g. moaning that those on 1500+ are getting 'further away' lol

The points system is essentially just a virtual queueing system (split up into batches of 100 points for convenience)

They released the bands - there are circa 2700 people on 1500+ - therefore, for a 3,000 allocation game, if they want to go, they will take all the tickets. As someone on 1400+ you are essentially at position 2,7XX in the queue and hoping that someone in front of you drops out and doesn't want to go. It doesn't really matter what the actual points totals are.

As the season goes on tickets will make their way down the brackets - e.g. Ipswich away, 8pm Wed 6 Jan. Suspect that won't have the uptake that Arsenal and Man City will.
It assumes everyone at ‘x’ bracket will have 100% attendance, they obviously won’t.

It’s just not ideal for people that a lot of big away games are early in the season. I’m sure people will be equally incandescent they can’t get a ticket to Bournemouth or Ipswich away in the winter months.

So you think a Tuesday night away at Middlesborough should be classed the same as a midweek game at Aston Villa, Leicester Birmingham etc?
No but it’s an easy, consistent way to measure it.

Most of the 20 pointer games are far away games because PL and EFL fixtures changes prioritised local games on weekdays. Wigan, Burnley, Blackburn x2, PNE, Norwich, Sheff U, Hull have all been midweek games in recent seasons.

What’s the point in scaling the points per game? The same people will cry that rivalry/top 6 games are lower points than Hull, Sunderland and so on which consolidates the ‘closed shop’. The people complaining about the points system have a not-so-hidden axe to grind to open up access to the biggest games. Sorry, if you don’t have the points, you do not nor should not deserve that automatic right.

It’s the same argument and if people actually got their head down and went to games, they’d be in the top brackets and have all the access they want.

That’s literally what I did. I rushed around for Wimbledon tickets in 23/24 to build points up and whatever else could get.

What about if they got rid of points for the popular games and only gave you points for unpopular?

0 points for Arsenal away, our first PPL game in 25 years, 50 pints for a scanned Plymouth away ticket. -50 points for a Plymouth ticket that doesn't get scanned

It’s needless complexity. We’ve all had to make sacrifices, I took AL or arranged to leave work early to go to Norwich, Middlesborough, Sheff U, Blackburn away.

I’ll probably take Plymouth away off work and might make a day of it. The points system has 100% farmed my engagement in fixtures I probably would’ve been happy to watch on TV. The envy I still feel whenever people talk about Middlesborough and Notts County in the POs has driven me to never miss out again.

Pretty much what Chelsea do. People who get those tickets in the ballot will be pissed they don’t get points and can’t access the next 2 ballots where fixtures may be awarded points.

The system is as fair as it can realistically expected to be.

A glory Hunters charter
There are many of us who haven’t got the points now to be a priority - I completely recognize that that and agree with how things are - but at the same time are not glory hunters.

I have had a season ticket for 40+ years and for many seasons, including seasons in the PL and the League 2 season, I went to all away games. Until a few seasons ago I would have been well above that magic 1,500 points threshold.

Now a combination of past and current responsibilities at home , being older physically, being partially retired and having less income means I can’t do all the aways. That’s been the case for the last five seasons or so and my points have caught up with me, or rather left me behind!

Am I a glory hunter, no. Would I like to be able to get to at least one away day in the PL this season, yes. Do I feel bad about wishing for that - no. I’ve bloody earned it.

A lot of can’t comprehend that to be on our level of points, there’s no extra incentive to be on 2000+ points compared to say, 1700-1800ish. Functionally, you can go to just about any game you want barring the off chance we draw a team with less than 600-800 in the away end.

If you’re above 1500+, it’s mostly hobbyists who plan most of their weekends around football.

Had an email from the club in plenty of time.

Laying out exactly points, times and allocation.

Nothing wrong with that communication & it was on the socials too.

They simply don't know the psychology behind a diehard football fan and until they do don't think they'll get far in the field of choice of employment.

That’s unfortunate, but ultimately, there are people in similar circumstances to you who did make it aways.

Did you buy a ballot membership? If so, I wish you all the best and hope you get some tickets. As the season progresses, they’ll be plenty of instances where 2nd-4th sale windows so hopefully there will be opportunities for you there too.

I did, so hopefully I’ll get lucky. That or one of the less attractive or midweek fixtures makes it as far as my points total. I can do distance, evenings or midweeks as an occasional or one off thing.

If I don’t get to a game, I’ve also had some pretty special away day moments down the years. I’ve seen us win at Anfield, I was at White Hart Lane for the great escape and at Notts country. And I just squeaked in for a ticket fire Blackburn away last season with my points so I can’t complain

Yeah, I get all that, but when you've got people telling you, you havent put in the "hard yards" when you have been there through the shortest of times is a kick in the teeth.

I'm in the couldn't bracket due to work and other commitments, the games I could go to, I couldn't get away tickets. I've got 1200 points so I'm hardly sat on my arse.

We also know there were people buying them en mass in their networks to accumulate points then setting them to other people.

I'm lucky, I'm one of the 300 ballot winners.
To be fair everybody makes choices in life. I took certain jobs that probably paid less but gave me the opportunity to see all the city games.

ESTC is England Supporters Travel Club - does 70% on points and 30% on ballot. Has been like this or similar for 20+ years. Has worked well, enough tickets in ballot to get up ladder.

I mentioned this on here a couple of years ago and got ridiculed but I think it works well - difference with ESTC is you have to collect away tickets in person and have to scan in for Home games at Wembley so there is less scope for abuse.

I personally think that is the biggest problem with the CCFC one, ability to buy, get points and not attend. With digital tickets, this should be easy to address so hopefully the club gets onto it.

Plymouth will be half-empty if they don’t.
I went to the euros in Germany and had a England members ticket for the group games and never had to pick up personally. I logged on to his membership and downloaded from there

You don't for the tournaments and haven't had to since Euro 2020

But before that, and still including qualifiers/friendlies all England away tickets have been collection only

Euro 2016 against Russia in Marseille the designated pick up point was in the Vieux Port, right where it was all kicking off - The Russians were just picking people off as they come and went, horrible day

Went to the euros in France 2016 I don't remember picking them up there either

Minus Bristol City and probably Millwall, this is generally not the case at all. These incidents are blown out of proportion to suit a certain narrative.

These incidents ETSC gets mentioned a lot unironically and I’m aware of a lot of gaming the system for both home and away games. It’s not practical nor desirable to emulate that for clubs up and down the country. It’s akin to breaking a nut with a sledgehammer.

Any system can be gamed in this context. Our system is fair, consistent and easy to manage when frankly, the demand his relatively recent.

I never accused you of being a glory hunter, but what you suggested would definitely benefit those that are.

Exactly. Ive got back from games in Yorkshire in half the time it's taken me to get back from Albion.

What do you do, design an algorithm that takes in to account congestion, transport links etc to work out points on a game by game basis?

20 points for midweek is an easy to administer arbitary number.

They could easily give the top bracket all of Monday to buy and then start moving down the threshold on Tuesday. Would help avoid the

if only they did, lived in Manchester and met far, far more United fans than City fans
100% true. The view that there are more City than United fans in the Manchester area is one of the biggest myths in football

You’re absolutely not a glory hunter. If there was a way of boosting points for long term continuous season ticket holders, or perhaps carving out an allocation for certain matches for them, I think that would be fair (I have 2000 plus points fwiw)

I do think 20 points for Arsenal is generous but at the end of the day, it is a Friday and have had to book annual leave to go to it. Well, that and big day out in London!

Found the same when I worked in Liverpool. Reds far outnumbered Evertonians
The thing about Man U and Liverpool fans is there’s just a lot of them everywhere. Their local support is massive (I lived for 20 years in Manchester)

How would that make things less of a closed shop if regulars from the 80s, 90s, 00s or 2010s can claim historic point bonuses?

How’s that fair on the young people in particular who have committed over the last 3 years?

Last 3 years is a fair and reasonable time frame.

I'm pretty sure Norton -cuffy is off, possibly linked to Hull I think saw a link yesterday.

It's just that traditionally City and Everton are the smaller team so had to cling on to a make beloieve idea that they were the team for the locals.

City are the more recently successful team in Manchester but seem to be really mentally small that they still cling on to this.

I don’t think there’s much you can or should do about the closed shop. But if you asked me to compare loyalty of a continuous (continuous being the key word) season ticket holder of 20 plus years with someone with say 1500 points (and who I guess might have gone to say half the away matches over what has been a 3 glory year period) then I think there’s a case. Just a personal view

City are strange in that their support was actually quite good in the 70s and fantastic when they dropped down the leagues. Probably better than teams like Newcastle and Leeds. They just don’t seem to have picked much new local support up as they’ve become a dominant team. Obviously, because United are simply too big in the locality. As opposed to say a Chelsea who used to get pretty poor gates before their money came in.

They built a whole identity being against something they've now become so I think theres some denial in there.
Worth it for the leagues and cups?
Id bloody say so!

I know some Man City fans who genuinely enjoyed the calamity times and would go back to it. They’ll be Cov fans like that emerging soon as well, all part of the psyche of some fans. Clubs have a character for good and bad which it’s hard to lose.
