With the new kit being heavily rumoured to be a remake of the 87 kit, it lead me to think about when is it a good time to let go.

I was 8 in 87, went to the final (although don’t recall much of it) and have loved hearing the stories over the years of team spirit, beers after the games etc. I also think it’s great that the team of 87 still largely get together every now and then ..

But

I think we should move on.

In my opinion, last years achievements outshine the cup win. We won the league over 46 games as opposed to 7 in the cup run, smashed the goal scoring charts and won plaudits everywhere.

I’m not saying forget 87 by any means but at what stage do we move on ?

The Cup was a competition of value back then which made it more of a thing. The whole day on mainstream TV etc. It means largely nothing now thanks to the big clubs opting out of it. We won it when it was the cup to win - I don’t think we need to let it go. It’s not like we’ve got a ton of silverware

Back then fans of clubs would debate if hey would prefer to win the league or FA Cup. Cup has been devalued since then because the boys in the PL want to be in the CL places.

Ahh the FA Cup win of '87.
3pm on a Saturday., and the last game of the season.
There were 4 TV Channels and two of them had build up from 9am.
Even people who didn't like football watched the cup final. If you walked down your street, it would be deserted as everyone was watching the match.
Back then, winning the cup was as good as winning the league.

I was a baby at the time so never experienced it but ive always had mixed feelings. As amazing an achievement as it was, it always felt a reminder of how little weve actually won and underachieved for a club with so much potential. Id rather we quietly honour it and focus on the future than the current obsession.

It's modern society unfortunately no one gave a shit about the strip as long as it had the badge on it.

Not that I was in the pub…but it was just the shirt we wore. I don’t remember much fuss at junior school.

Edit: I do remember there was a high level of scrutiny over how well you could do your Keith Houchen headers into Cov baths.

People didn’t buy and wear City shirts in any way like they do today. It was peak Casual era and to wear a home shirt to games showed you were a bit of a wally. ( also suicidal if you travelled to away games)
As the team progressed in the Cup in 87 it became more popular- anything associated with the cup run became “lucky” but look at photos of Cov fans in 87 and most wouldn’t be in the shirt

I think a lot of the argument of "letting it go" regarding the FA Cup, is due to just how badly it's been diluted in worth in recent years.
For the most part in the last decade or so, it's been seen as a stop gap before the champions league and end of season fight in PL.
It used to be the pinnacle of end of season, the last game to be played, now... Some random Saturday in early may before the season ends.
Doesn't help that in most finals, one of the teams is already planning the end of the PL title race or the CL final.
It used to mean something more than what it physically is. But now it's just another piece of silverware.
Shame our recent final was robbed from us, it would have meant something again.
But I guess Asian markets wouldn't pay as much for these sky blues.

I was at Wembley 87 and it's still one of the best days of my life but the only downside was coming out of the ground and thinking what now. Should of been the cup winners cup as it was called then to look forward to but we had nothing . The championship win and now we have all been thinking forward to a new season in the Premier league which to me is a massive difference

The kit for 1987 actually had white shorts, but the kit actually looks better with dark blue shorts and don't forget we didn't just wear the kit it for the cup final we had it for the whole season, you just grow to like it.

1986/87 season was great for results in FA cup over half off a season. First FA cup semifinal and FA cup being two of the greatest days in nearly 60 years of following the City.
2025/26 however is the best season overall for me. The season that kept on giving right from the start. Great wins away from home at Derby and Millwall. 7-1 win v QPR on the day we finally owned the CBS. Epic gams v Middlesbrough home and away. Believing after the Swansea game that we were going to win the Championship. The great day at Blackburn when we were mathematically promoted. Then ending the season with three great wins. Finishing the season with the most goals I’ve ever seen scored with the best Goal difference and most points.
Qualifying for Europe under Noel Cantrell was a great achievement but not always a good watch although I was still young to be passing judgement.

An achievement from 40 years ago should not outshine 3 promotions in the last 9 seasons.

The club should start living in the now, as the owner himself said. Do another boring ‘87 kit on the 50 year mark instead.

The FA Cup win was an amazing day, coming from behind to beat the “dream team”. But I’d swap that for last season every time, buying the stadium and getting back to the top division is a far greater legacy for the club to benefit from.
