I’m not so sure. Depends where his recent family roots are. I just presumed they were midlands having spent most of his career in the area with Walsall and then here.

Our defence was far better under Ady’s coaching and since the back line remained largely unchanged when Lampard came in i think the basics installed remained.

It’s now a shambles and we have a no2 keeper who isn’t in tune either.

Wilson deserved to play in a game like this, if only to reward loyalty and the fact that he knows how to throw to Gus to start the build.

I have been reflecting on last night’s game, trying to think of some positives to take from it.

It’s a hard ask but I would say that, on the whole, those new signings we haven’t seen much - or indeed anything - of before last night, did show signs that they are or could be better than the players they replaced. It was hard to judge Cherif because we were’t able to get the ball to him enough. I also thought that Torp had a good game and deserves to start ahead of Grimes on Saturday.

Other than that, Hamer showed no more than a couple of glimpses of his old self and doesn’t presently deserve to start. Bentley, Saka and Lati don’t look up to the required level - which is what we thought anyway - Amenda will be missed and Thomas was poor, although we know he can play better than that.

Confidence will be low going into Saturday’s game but at least I will be wanting us to show more fighting spirit and better organisation at the back. I’m thinking we will probably have a back four of MVE, Thomas, Munfi and JDS with Pinnock in if we play five at the back.

We clearly need to score more goals and, given that we haven’t found the formula yet, I wonder if we should play Simms and Cherif together. They are different types of player and could work well together but we will never know unless we try it. Let’s face it, with Wright injured and Awoniyi injured we haven’t got many other options.

Is it because they need 3 or that other players are not moving into space to make themselves avaliable for the first time pass? Off the ball movement and clear communication makes life easier for the person on or about to receive the pass.

Our movement, or lack of it, is a huge issue. Said it Sunday.

The same players were playing one touch football last season but had a lot more confidence. When you lack it, you’re going to be more hesitant and play safer passes.
 
For as good as Torp was at times, he was cooked by 60 minutes and off the ball had as much presence as a training cone which made it very easy for Villa to find space in the middle.

If he's going to play on Saturday I'd consider playing him ahead of Yirenkyi and Onyeka.
 
When there's a clear difference in level of ability/class, as we've seen most games this season, got to take chances when we're on top.....

After Torp's goal we were all over them, crowd was on it, two glorious chances and two bad decisions made in front of goal. Was same against Brighton, got to make the most of those spells in play.

That said, if we're going to concede a couple of utterly dogshit goals every game, we don't really give ourselves much chance.

Last night was shite all over the pitch. I'll leave the failings and technical inadequacies of individual players to the ratings thread, but really what the fuck is going on tactically?

We were trying to press their CB's with Hamer pushing up with Cherif but all night their CB just played one ball between them to McGinn and he was already beyond our other CM's. It happened so often it has to be that's what the players are being told to do positionally. If a team uses movement and slick one touch passing to get around your press fair play to them, but to just send one simple ball straight down the middle of the pitch to take out your entire team?

The passing again was slow and the couple of times we tried a one touch pass or a flick we lost the ball. No-one was playing on the half turn looking to progress and the balls from the CB/CDM just ended up getting passed straight back to them.

So many of our challenges were being made from the 'wrong' side. Players trying to get in ahead of their player, losing out and then their player is running towards our goal. Get goal side - it's something you learn at U10's.

Then there's the defending - all the goals were embarrassing. First one what kind of an attempt that is to play offside I don't know and the two corners were shite. Everyone back defending and they still get an easy chance. If they put a ball in the box we have absolutely no-one there to challenge for the second ball on the edge of the area - they're either all standing in the area or halfway up the pitch. The time it takes for us to react to a situation because we're ball watching is horrendous.

And then there's the poor psychological management. It seems Frank and the coaching team have absolutely destroyed the team mentally over the summer and sapped all their confidence by constantly telling them how much higher a level the PL is and how hard it'll be and now the players are convinced they're going to lose before they've even stepped on the pitch. Like telling a child they're useless - do it often enough and after a while they'll start to believe it. We put up more of a fight against PL teams when we were playing in the Championship (or below).

Seriously annoyed at how little fight we're making of this.

I last worked in accounting about 20 years ago. And when I said 'make' I was including other factors like design, distribution and marketing. If the mark-up is that small we're definitely overpaying somewhere in the process.
 
Just seen some fast forwarded bits back. Cherif shot at 1-1 probably going in but hits Yirenky, sums up our luck at the moment. Really good save by Bentley from Barkley just before their second goal. Also how TF was Mfini booked in 23rd minute, literally just can’t tackle these days.

Got to be honest Villa had some better chances first half than I appreciated but also thought second half until the horror show third we played pretty well again. It’s also interesting that however well Barkley played in patches he dropped two massive bollocks on the edge of his own area, one led to foul and our goal, the other one we nearly slipping a player through on goal. He does that for us it’s costing us games and he’s slaughtered on here

Also our defending for goals was as school boy as I thought on the night
 
How did Cherif look last night? Apologies if this has already been addressed. I’ve left my glasses at home.

Yes that Mfuni booking was laughable, it was a brilliantly timed, precise tackle. Not even a foul.

My hunch in the first half especially was that they were just awful playing out from the back to the point Thomas really should have scored. We have a habit of showing too much respect against such teams who will give up the ball in dangerous places if put under pressure.

Good news is we'll be able to watch Coventry City playing at the Memorial Park in the Sunday league in around 9 years time going by this projection.

What was the attendance last night? Didn’t see it announced at the ground and not listed on any football sites. Just says N/A. Thanks

Other than our repeated failure to attract any of the established players we went after. Tomori, RLC, Barkley, Openda, etc. You can say maybe they were paper talk but it would be strange if all those who fit the profile of not over the hill and significant top level experience were made up.

Its easy to see why RLC and tomori wont leave milan for a relegation candidate

Barkley is wanted by emeri , Lyon were in europe , its easy to see why they cHose not to come here
