Ive been wondering about this. Genuine wonder. What is the market at various levels? Are there enough championship quality players out there and it’s a matter of finding them or is it quite a limited pool each summer and if you don’t get one of say the top ten then you’re downgrading?
I do think teams seem to get similar targets and there’s a bit of me that wonders if clubs buying the same data product end up with similar results as well.

We have Perry, as well..you might be young , no idea. Even in the Prem, we used to play young players, even centre backs 18 to 21. They were brilliant..Great work with your emojis.our 3rd choice left back, we’ll be fine then

There’s definitely gems to be found but I do think it’s a lot harder now. I also wonder how much clubs are embracing AI as it will definitely play a role in the future.
Data is a massive part of it at all levels. We often say follow the Brighton or Brentford model but the problem is we are not the only ones now as others can also see how good it can be.
I would imagine that most clubs use the same or similar data analytic tools so naturally come up with similar targets.

The trick IMO is to cast a wider net with data but you’re still filtering with human judgement. Id imagine most systems allow for finding similar profile players using ML algorithms but then you’re only ever as good as your data quality and for young players particularly outside the highest level that’s pretty sparse. If we’re just buying a data product and running some basic searches I’d expect us to get the same as everyone else. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a data scouting course going around with example searches even.
I’m very data forward but the stats are so limited really that everyone is looking a two or three key metrics per player so I’m not sure how much texture is there to get different results even. And I suppose a lot of it comes from the profile a manager asks for and whether it can be interpreted.
One thing I thought worked well with Badlan was he was clearly ahead of his tim me on finding players with data but we always seemed to get decent human beings which must have been a human filter somewhere in the process.

Changing the orientation of the stadium wouldn't influence this at all imo, would rather we put those funds into the squad personally

They got some of it back but also had massive debts from league 1 promotion season and the Championship season. All those players they spent £130 mil on last season will also be Prem wages. They were the opposite of Luton and spunked all their dough trying to stay up but didn't even get close. The debts have to be paid.
Sunderland will be in the same position next season if they don't stay up.

The standard of players we are now after will be very high and will need to be if we are to improve the squad. We are looking at a very few select players that can make a difference. We are not a small fish no more the owners expects at least play offs. The fans expect the same but we all have to understand when you as a club have high expectations the net of players you can get is smaller.
We need top top players who not only can play top level championship ,but we have to invest in some players that we think can play in the premiership.. I know ill get shit for this post but we are a serious club with ambition. Its not a pipe dream or something the owner is sitting waiting for, he is planning it.
So the players that come in have to be more than good enough to fit in, fight and know the goal. This squad needs help, but it needs top quality help and that player everyone with similar ambition is after including prem clubs. To find potential players costs, to buy potential players costs more and takes time. If we sign anyone in the next 2 weeks they will be top quality and will of taken a lot of work to get over the line.
We are a very different club than most have been used to And a club that has never had as much ambition as it has now, well not or in my lifetime anyway. The fans have backed it and want success and deserve it. But we truly are not shopping at Aldi anymore so when we go shopping we are a bit more selective about what you pick up .
Anyway a win on Saturday, 3 pts, no injuries and that's a very good start to the season. That's all we should be looking at and whatever else comes is a bonus.

What hard evidence of the targets we have lurched from and too do you have please? It sounds as if you have lapped up all 10 to 15 rumours on here that started from about May?
It is likely the Hughes bid was true and reporting accurate. If we bid between £8m to £10m of add on’s, I and most would say that is around the correct valuation … Hull wanting £20m is an unrealistic valuation, but they are in their rights to ask for it for a player under contract of course.

I like to think we’re just working smarter, not harder, in the market - trying our luck for players who are available below market-value, either due to PSR (i.e., KKH), their current club being in financial trouble (i.e., Hughes), or a player pushing for a move due to a lack of first team playing time (i.e., Woolfenden).
It’s a game of trial and error: sometimes we touch lucky (i.e., KKH) and sometimes we get told to do one (i.e., Hughes). We’re clearly not willing to pay full market-rate for players (i.e., Doyle), when there are distressed assets available at a discounted prices.
In other markets - i.e., Scandinavia - where the clubs aren’t as wealthy and the player prices aren’t so inflated, we’re investing in proper scouting and analysis to pick up some hidden gems (i.e., Torp).
That’s quite clearly ‘the model’, and it’s much smarter and more sustainable - particularly for a club of our size/income - than the Wrexham or Birmingham model.
Our journey will always be longer than others, but that’s part of the romance of being a Sky Blue / Coventrian - it’s literally in our DNA - we weren’t born with silver spoons in our mouths, we fight against the odds, we reinvent ourselves and, together, we rise from the ashes. And when we do, it’s all the more fucking glorious. WLADITT.

Find it interesting that both Sheff Utd and ourselves were interested in Hughes, but have gone in different directions for targets since Hull asked for £500 million and a jacuzzi complex.
As for more of a ‘prospect’ CB, Ethan Pye at Stockport seems worth a look.

It's just good business sense don't overspend on an asset otherwise you have lost money. And I don't want to hear how one player can "guarantee" promotion, it's still a huge gamble. I think some people on here are struggling because we are in a different scenario to normal. We don't have a load of players out of contract we haven't sold off our key assets so we have only added a bit of quality. As we don't need to panic buy we are going about our business sensibly, walking away if people overvalue their players I'm fine with the squad we have, if like another CB but the world isn't going to end if we don't. There's no point in replacing Binks with just another body if we want healthy competition.

He was good for us, but OK with Leicester and Norwich and not worth anywhere near £10M.

I know things aren't as simple as we all hope, but you would think FL is astute enough to know that our squad depth is pretty poor in some areas. I would hope he has been banging King's door down asking for additions to the squad.
I guess the danger is if we keep getting knocked back by teams like Hull and Ipswich then we could end up with nothing, or worse, we panic and get someone who isn't a good fit.

I signed Ethan Pye in a FM22 save with Spennymoor town when I was VNL and he stayed with me all the way to the Championship although he was a LB not CB at the time!

Just find it mad that we’re now at 414 pages on one thread and we’ve basically brought in a replacement loanee for an injured keeper, a decent RB and an unknown-quantity LB. Feels like this window has gone on for fucking years at this point
