The government commissioned independent review into mental health, autism and ADHD has, like others before it, concluded that conditions aren't being over diagnosed.
Numbers have increased due to increased largely due to awareness of the conditions existing.
The report once again highlights the poor level of support available, particularly for younger people, leading to poor long term outcomes. Recommends earlier intervention and strengthening of services whilst stating that this can not be done purely by the NHS. Its needs the community, schools, employers etc to step up.
Without explicitly stating it the report strongly hints that the social contract has been broken for younger generations and is a major contributor. Essentially a generation that feel they have no future and no hope.
Interestingly it says that support and treatment should not be reliant on a diagnosis that can take months, or years, to obtain. Also warns that we are in danger of over diagnosis in the immediate future as people turn to unregulated private providers due to long wait times with the NHS. Again doesn't explicitly say it but hints that paying for a diagnosis gives you the result you want.
The question now is will this be the wake up call needed to take action or as its yet another report that gives the 'wrong' answer will it be filed away and forgotten about.
