CCFC/Ipswich/Hull summer recruitment thread. (3 Viewers)

As it stands we still need to add a left back, another CB, another LW, probably another forward.

You have to judge things based on how they are right now and right now, Newcastle, Palace etc have stronger squads.
As it stands yes. But I'm sure we're going to bring more in. I'd prefer and wait to bring in the right players as long as they're in before the window closes.

My Palace mate is worried about this season.

I’m sure we will bring more in, but again, if I’m judging it right now that’s how I see it. I can’t really make a call until the window shuts

Yes i think most appreciate that we need more now, but are waiting to see what happens at the end.

What’s the average number of transfers made by promoted clubs since Covid? We’re on 6 which I imagine is very low.

Im sure they do, but there are other positions more important ahead of it, plus who is available at a decent price and that's any good?
Assuming Wright is out for 8-12 weeks, I can't think of a position that I'd rate more important ahead of a striker. In fact if Wright wasn't out it would still be top of my list, posing an effective threat on the counter will be huge for us this year and having a pacy striker that occupies a couple of defenders for long periods of time will take some of the pressure off.

Don't want to end up looking like England against the Argies in the World Cup, got to have an effective threat at all times and that's a stretch for Simms at the moment.

Yeah saying teams will struggle because of XYZ is just hypothetical scenario building.

As it stands, on paper, every other PL team has a superior team to our own.

Yes, there's reasons as to why a handful of the more established teams could trip up - i.e. Palace as a prime example - having a thin squad, no Glasner, struggling to sign players, and having to contend with another European campaign.

But, how many pre-season predictions really ever come off.

We need another 3 quality signings to really convince me that we have enough on our own to beat the drop.

Posters are seriously underestimating how difficult this league actually is.

So am I, but again when we're talking about 'have you seen the other squads?', I have and at the moment ours is weaker than all of them.

Ipswich have signed lots of averageness. Hull haven’t done too much and what they have is also average. Too say if we don’t do this it that we’re down is ludicrous. Some just can’t comprehend that some of our squad from last year are perfectly capable of stepping up. They may not be shiny new signings but they are good players

You can already see evidence of Ashton sanctioning a lot of poor deals in the last 2 seasons. Jury's out whether they've learned lessons this summer, but it strikes me as the throw enough shit at the wall and hope it sticks approach

Ipswich don't seem like a well run club - which is weird to say about a club who have won promotion in 3 of the last 4 years. They were riding on the coat-tails of a very good manager in Mckenna who I think will establish himself as a PL manager after his break
A slither of truth to the bottom bit. Our League One recruitment was top notch and took us straight through the divisions, but it meant we didn't have to do the 'sell & reinvest' journey that Coventry and Sunderland did to build the squads over a longer time. Our head of recruitment left for a job at Man United in summer 2024 so there was a bit of a void for a while. Ashton has always been very good at getting fees for selling players though, both with us and Bristol City.

Our business last summer was very mixed (Akpom was a shocker even at the time, then we overpaid for McAteer and Egeli) but we changed the recruitment team at the end of 2025 and the January window was a more sensible one. Same with what we've done so far - even if there are a couple of deals I'm not mad on, the bulk is a clear step up from two years ago. Much more focus on physicality, durability and players with a track record in big five leagues, which just wasn't there before.

Bloody hell, England had Harry Kane up front in that match, one of the best CF's in the world! And look what good that did.

If Kane couldnt make a difference, your expecting an awful lot from Simms.

I'm normally quite accurate yet many disagree each season.

Last season I got us and Ipswich the wrong way round. Thought they would win it at a canter but we did.

I said Southampton would struggle because of their manager but would fly up the table as soon as they got rid of him. This was all before the season started. Didn't see spygate coming though. Had many disagreements about their manager on here.

I said Middlesbrough would be strong but would struggle because they sold most of their goals.

I said Sheffield United would be mid table at best as their signings were poor and didn't think much of their manager.

I had Leicester as having a relegation battle on their hands when many thought they would be near the top.

I also thought Hull would get relegated 😂

It's going to be much more difficult to predict this season. But Hull are looking poor and Ipswich have used a scattergun approach and not sure of their manager. The lower down sides in Europe could well struggle. Not even too sure about Newcastle.

We have a great set of lads and some quality signings. We're a goalscorer and LB away from having a good chance of staying up. A couple more in would be great.

Everytime I hear the word Hull, I cant help but think of this

We will do less volume because we don’t need as much but I am confident we we’ll end the window doing better business than Ipswich.

Disagree with the first bit. Ipswich underperformed their squad last year and on paper had a much better base than us to build from.

There's some revision on their performance over last season, they got away with murder!

Let's look at the facts.

We were 12 points ahead of them after 10 games, we finished ahead of them at the end of the season by 12 points. It pretty clear Ipswich had a bad start.
Our mid season blip was worse than their start

Agreed. We should also remember teams that have gone up with similar or higher points totals than us last season that got relegated. Norwich (97) Burnley (101 and 100) Leicester (97) Ipswich (96). Sheff Utd got 92 and were hopeless. At least some of these had stronger teams and squads than we do.

It is possible as Forest, Leeds, Sunderland have shown but it’s going to be very difficult and we still need a lot more.

Last year was a great achievement, I think the players were fantastic. But without being negative, there were a number of games we won against weak sides where we were outplayed for long periods. Watford and Blackburn at home being a couple of obvious examples. That’s brilliant, all credit to the players for finding a way to win, it speaks to their character. But I don’t how many will be able to step up to PL level, certainly as starters.

Saying it again, Ipswich have done better than us in the market. And are evidently still going

As sparks says above weve done good business but nowhere near enough of it
They have got more money to spend though - with the first lot of prem money/revenues and then the parachutes and now the ‘new’ money.

Must have an overall effect and can maybe pitch for more/different targets wage wise?

Maybe? I dunno.

Hull City fan here.

I don’t think you needed to do massive amounts of business as you have built steadily over the last few years and have a settled management and squad.

We were miles behind you last season, so to try and catch up we are making a lot of moves. Every player we bring in improves our starting line-up. Tsolakis for Pandur, Mendy for Egan, Gourna-Doath for Crooks and so on. We are delighted to be getting written off by everyone- that’s what worked out well for us last season, and I think Jakirovic is a great manager, who will play on this and get every last drop out of our squad.

Ipswich on the other hand, just seem to have gambled on a manager and a squad. Could be great, could be disastrous. Cementing that group together is going to be a hell of a task.
