A follow on to another post - I was just thinking (on a very slow Friday) about Robins’ success in the transfer/loan market since his return. There’s been a little bit of talk on this so I thought I’d list all the signings/loans and people can judge for themselves which are successes and which are failures. Broken down into season as we’ve obviously seen a change in recruitment tact in that time:

2017/18
Grimmer -
O’Brien -
Hyam -
Vincenti -
Doyle -
McNulty -
Andreu -
Clarke-Harris -
Maguire-Drew -
Barrett -
Nazon -
Davies -
Biamou -
Kelly -
McDonald -

2018/19
Chaplin -
L Thomas -
Hiwula -
Ogogo -
Brown -
Mason -
Westbrooke -
Wakefield -
McCallum -
Allassani -
Meyler -
Sterling -
Enobakhare -
Bakayoko -

2019/20
Godden -
Wilson -
McFadzean -
Rose -
Dabo -
Pask -
Marosi -
O’Hare -
Jobello -
Watson -
Kastaneer -
Walsh -
Giles -

2020/21
Hamer -
Da Costa -
James -
Hilssner -
Ostigard -
Walker -
Sheaf -
Camp -

Running through them all, I came to the conclusion that we had about an 80% success rate (success being defined as fulfilling their role/expectation in the squad) but would be interested to hear others’ thoughts.

Not bad he isn't afraid to get rid once you have gone as far as you can go to get better players in to bring us to the next level good management and planning. We have some good assets at the club now in Dabo hamer walker and o hare who if they keep improving will be worth a lot of money

With our budget and where we buy from, anything better than we've had would be miraculous. They'll never all work and the recruitment team have been nothing short of amazing.

the bigger signings who we have needed to perform have on the whole performed

vincenti
Andreu
ogogo
brown
baka
Kastaneer
Hilssner

are probably the biggest disappointments in that group in terms of expectation

**EDIT** So intended to rate these as overall signings for the club, but it turns out that I've rated them based on my expectations. So make of that what you will.

2017/18
Grimmer - 10/10 did everything we needed him to do, hate the way he was treated by the club in his second season.
O’Brien - 6/10 performed well enough when called upon.
Hyam - 10/10 one of the best CBs at the club in my time, can count his bad games on one hand.
Vincenti - 2/10 bambi on ice. Just an all round poor player.
Doyle - 10/10 the glue that held the team together.
McNulty - 10/10 28 goals in a season. Wish we cpukd have kept him for another season.
Andreu - 3/10 looked a good player, the injury ruined that and then fell put of favour in his seond season.
Clarke-Harris - 6/10 good player, just didn't fit in with the playing model.
Maguire-Drew - 2/10 didnt really see much of him, looked a promisijg plauer though.
Barrett - 2/10 looked like there's a player in there, no end product.
Nazon - 5/10 decent enough player, not enough end product.
Davies - 10/10 proper no nonsense defender.
Biamou - 10/10 may be biased as he's my favourite player with the club. As they say not a great scorer of goals but a scorer of great goals. Hardly prolific but offers a lot to the team. I believe he's the only player at the club to have played in all domestic comps excluding the Premier league.
Kelly - 10/10 I recall him coming under stick the first half of the season, but since then he's been brilliant, he's the new Doyler, holding the team together.
McDonald - 7/10 solid enough defender. Think he was injured or suspended and couldn't win his place back from Davies & Hyam.

2018/19
Chaplin - 10/10 purely for the Sunderland goal. 3/10 for everything else. Was touted as the McNulty replacement but came nowhere near.
L Thomas - 2/10 incredibly exciting player, but in the end didn't really offer us anything.
Hiwula - 5/10 had a good enough first season with us, but lost confidence in his second and never got it back.
Ogogo - 1/10 what was the point?
Brown - 1/10 as above.
Mason - 7/10 tidy little player. Just lacked the cutting edge to keep his place.
Westbrooke - 7/10 good technical player. Left because there was no promise of game time, I think he would have fit in the team nicely.
Wakefield - 10/10 for the assist in the Sunderland goal, 1/10 for everything else. Was branded the fastest player Adi had worked with. Didnt really see anything of him due to injuries, and what we did see wasn't anything special.
McCallum - 10/10 great player. Bought him dirt cheap, sold him for 7 figures and he's still playing for us. Incredible business from MR & the team.
Allassani - 1/10 don't know if he was supposed to be a replacement for JJ, but if he was then he took the role a little too seriously by doing his ACL. When we did see him it wasn't anything to write hoke about.
Meyler - 5/10 did the job we brought him in for.
Sterling - 7/10 dogshit at first, then grew in to the season.
Enobakhare - 6/10 good playmaker, scored some goals by don't think we got the best out of him.
Bakayoko - 4/10 scored a few crucial goals for us (brace at Charlton anyone?). There's a player in there somewhere, but MR hasn't been able to get it out. Think it's time he moved on.

2019/20
Godden - 10/10 had last season not been cut short, he would have bagged 20.
Wilson - 8/10 performed well when called upon. Doing well covering for Marko at the moment, couldn't ask for much more.
McFadzean - 8/10 solid player. Made a few poor mistakes but imo he's saved us more points than he's cost us.
Rose - 10/10 another solid player. Hardly puts a foot wrong. Think he may struggle to get his place back from Leo when he's fit, though.
Dabo - 10/10 what a machine. Never stops, takes the piss out of opposition players when he breezes past them.
Pask - 5/10 never going to be a regular starting player, done well when called upon though.
Marosi - 9/10 could do with working on his distribution, but a decent shot stopper.
O’Hare - 8/10 another exciting player also lacking in end product. Can tell he's got goals in him, just needs to work on his composure. If our other players were better in front of goal, his assists count would be higher.
Jobello - 4/10 looked a promising player before getting injured. Havent seen much of him since returning and I'm not sure how he could fit into the team without wingers.
Watson - 5/10 didn't even know who this was at first. Brought in as cover at RB. Did well enough when needed from what I remember.
Kastaneer - 10/10 for the slide tackle at Portsmouth and when he tried to floor the Ipswich player. 1/10 for everything else.
Walsh - 10/10 scouse Messi. Wouldn't have got promoted without him imo.
Giles - 8/10 hardly played last season. This season a great alternative to McCallum. Always looking to create something and good defensively at the back.

2020/21
Hamer - 10/10 just an all round joy to watch, and you're mad if you don't think he's the best player at the club by a mile.
Da Costa - 6/10 started the season injured, hasn't played much since being fit but looks like he's capable.
James - -/10 can't say anything yet, but going off what Barnsley fans are saying he seems to be a decent player
Hilssner - 1/10 unfortunate to be hit with medical issues that weren't picked up on his medical. Hope it works out for him.
Ostigard -10/10 brilliant player, great on the ground and in the air.
Walker - 6/10 not scored much but if he's not getting the service I can't blame him. Once he fully links with the other players he should start hitting the net more.
Sheaf - 5/10 marmite player. If he's got space he's brilliant, put him under pressure and he crumbles. Seems to cook up massively at least once every game he plays. Work on these silly errors and there's a player in there.
Camp - -/10 hasn't played yet, but he was brought in to provide cover for Wilson and that's what he's doing.

Well he’s had two promotions in three years and today’s squad is nothing like the squad two and three years ago so I’d say his success rate is very high.

Why dont we count little Timmy who signed for Cov u9's as well. I very much doubt Robins had much in the say of anyone signed for the U23's

We took arguably the best two players from a team who had Shrewsbury in the L1 play-offs. I had high hopes for both Brown and Ogogo and I don't think it was poor recruitment, just sometimes the fit isn't right and for whatever reason they don't work out. The same with people like Andreu who was very unlucky with an injury and never quite recovered. You can't legislate for that, so I'd avoid individual scoring and accept that it's nigh on impossible to get 100% of them right and look as a collective to say it's been better than we could possibly have hoped for or realistically expected. It's also down to the coaches getting the added ounces of improvement out of them too .

Conscious decision as I don’t think Robins gets involved in signings for the u23s. That’s mainly been dealt with by Stevens/Farndon to the best of my knowledge. James Pearson was essentially a trialist, I’ll give you Carl Baker as I couldn’t recall him being signed (even when I read it).

100% agree. Great post.

IIRC, Andreu was our marquee signing. His goal record in Scotland was outstanding for a midfielder, and coming from Norwich he seemed quite a coup. I do wonder if his injury hadn't happened, would he have done well. We'll never know, but what we do know is that MR and Co. still found a way to get promotion. No matter what the hurdle, he and his team always seem to find a solution.

Then he did not sign Hyam or McCallum then

Fair comment - Hyam I think was seen to be on the fringes of first team as soon as he came in. If I recall correctly, he was in the match day squad from the get go. McCallum I think you’ve got a point on.

To imply Sheaf and Pask are equal signings is ludicrous.

In regards to Mcallum i'd probably agree that he didn't have much of a say. Although Hyam was signed initially for the U23's I think he was recognised at being around the first team squad.

Would agree with this. McCallum was signed as a development squad player and has progressed through. Hyam was bought for the first team squad as a development player, so some slight differences.

The point mainly was that the main player whose earned the club money was not signed by him

Fair play for having a go.

Just a point about Nazon. You underestimate his impact the early part of the season when McNulty was misfiring.

Jones and Nazon single handedly won us and kept us in the race early part of season.

He was immense at Swindon and Lincoln away to name but a few games.

Even considering he wasn't interested by Christmas I'd say he played decent part in that season . Certainly wasn't a failure I'd give him a 6.5.

It's interesting many of the players Robins has let go (rightly). Have gone backwards.

Apart from.

Grimmer and JCH obvious exceptions. Both capable of playing high end league 1 low end championship.

To be fair, I just don't really remember. I had to look at the stats to get a general idea, and the numbers weren't great.

It's all very subjective lol.

But Grimmer was excellent I'd give him 10. I still dont get why king Robins played Sterling ahead of him!!! Unforgivable lol.

grimmer was a poor defender I assume the sterling reference is a joke

Sterling was better than Grimmer but I was unsure why we were developing a player for Chelsea instead of one of our own. Who knew Dabo was going to turn up and blow them both out of the water and score a couple of banging own goals on the way.
