2-year old killed in hit-and-run, McDonald Road

the car was dumped which implies it was maybe stolen? To be fair I can think that the person absolutely panicked on thinking they'd hit a kid and left the world of reason, just freezing and driving off....but not something that any of us would hope we'd do in that terrible situation.

A man and a woman have been arrested haven’t they?
 
I was driving down Longfellow road at about 4 and it was closed off. Had to go around the back way to get home. The car was dumped at the junction of Hipswell Highway so it doesn't look like they've driven off too far in it.
Its a really sad thing to happen.
 
Got home to my wife telling me that her friend had been round all afternoon after coming across the aftermath, she was in shock at what she'd seen. She said it was obvious that the 2 year old had gone and a doctor was already on the scene working on the 6 year old, the couple in the car legged it but not before the woman had reached into the car to get her handbag. Every parents worst nightmare.
 
Just been on Midlands today, the car hasn't travelled far from the scene and is just around the corner on Hipswell highway. There is also a bus at the site of the accident so it may be that is involved in some way.

FFS, and to think their parents would have been going about today as just a normal day. Lunch as normal, possibly on half term. Then by teatime their kids are dead after a split-second, out of the blue moment of catastrophe. Just horrible.

And the driver(s) are now suspected of drink driving.........if true, that's the best argument I've ever seen for not drinking&driving. Scum.
 
I hope the book gets thrown at them and they have a nice welcome in jail and don't last long, I can't ever imagine receiving that call or the knock from the police :(
 
Terrible situation, I hope the culprits get at least 15 years each

i just don't think that would be possible for most parents. Mate of mine died aged 17 in a RTA. His mum left his bedroom as he'd left it for 9 years after he died. She was never the same woman after that.

Obviously I have no sympathy for those involved if they have indeed scarpered, dumped the car and been drinking - i was thinking earlier what it would be like if you were careless, had a couple of pints before driving home, then you did hit and kill two kids like this. As well as the parents, if you had a conscience it'd be life ruiningly-devastating. I couldn't live with the guilt.
 
Lived and was brought up on this road for 20 odd years which should have no bearing on the story but some how it just feels "closer to home".

Read the news online as I'm currently overseas and it has absolutely knocked me sideways. What a horrific thing to happen and the fact that they then ran off is truly despicable.

They were just two and six years old for fucks sake. Absolutely heartbreaking........
 
This makes me feel sick. With the ‘closer to home’ stuff. I live just round the corner from where it happened and have walked across that junction with my two year old son many times.

I never have any alcohol if I know I’m driving, even if it’s an early start the next day. Zero tolerance as far as I’m concerned. “A couple of pints” then driving is not alright.

I have two daughters aged 4 and 7 and just thinking about them not being there breaks my heart never mind their lives being ended in such a horrible way because some wanker had too much beer and didn’t want to pay for a taxi.
 
I have nothing but admiration for those men and women who work in the "specially-trained police officer" role where they have to try to "assist the family at this time". What the hell do you say when you walk into a police interview room to be confronted by the parents of two little children who have been mown down by a drunk driver 45 minutes previously? I wouldn't know where the hell to start trying to "comfort" them. All I would be able to picture is those parents trying to scrape the mangled little bodies, which 10 seconds earlier had been 2 smiling lads, off the tarmac. You just can't imagine what that would be like.

I wouldn't fancy that job one bit but I'm glad someone does, hopefully they do help in some way (but I have no idea how, beyond practical stuff like dealing with bereavement procedures, media engagements etc)

As a parent i don't think you would ever be the same, it would literally destroy you.

Agree 100% with that. I hardly drink these days but whenever I let people know I don't drink and drive at all, I always end up being told "you can have a couple" and it seems to wind people up when I don't.

I agree. When I was younger I always had that couple, so hard for me to be holy and preach to others, but I honestly don't understand the point of it. It puts you and others at risk but you get none of the feeling or fun of being twatted. I drink less often these days, but if I'm on a session I want to get smashed. Simple rules leave the car at home or don't drink. We don' truly know how much it does or doesn' affect us but why risk it? Not just others lives you'll ruin but your own and your families too.

My pair are 3 and 6, and to be honest, there would be little reason to stick around this mortal coil if some complete degenerate had done this to my children.

Something has to be done for those poor parents, a charity memorial event or something. And if the driver of the car gets the usual 3 years sentence for killing innocent people, may I suggest some justice is taken in the form of several hefty shoeings.

I've seen what it does to parents in a situation like the one here, it really does rip your heart to pieces.

What will they get 10years for death by dangerous driving? Whilst this poor family have been robbed of their two kids and seeing them grow up

I'm no expert but the level of damage suggests significant speed IMO

Same here. I have just the one, but she IS my life. If anything like this ever happened to her that would be it for me. The end. :(

Same, I will have a shandy at the very most rarely but still feel a bit uncomfortable so don't tend to unless I'm not driving for a good while after.

It's just not worth it, what's the point in just having one and what's the point in risking it?

It would be easier to just make the law no alcohol at all.

Completely agree about the damage. Looks like they were motoring.

Such tragic news, don't know what I would do if it was my 2. :(

People tank it down that road as it’s wide and pretty straight. I’ve seen people doing at least 60 several times. As much as I don’t like them it needs speed bumps. All it’s got at the moment is a electric sign that says when you are doing over 30.
