Indeed. The seige mentality at the club had gone

Lampard has brought it back

It’s why I say it’s a whole new thing. I think he’ll want his own players, he’s clearly lost patience with a few in his time so far. Exciting summer ahead hopefully.

I think it’s clear that the Robins/Viveash fall out, Lawrence leaving, and the cup loss, plus TBF losing O’Hare/Godden/Kelly/Fadz who had been the off field spine as well as on field all in the space of what six months did some real damage.
It did indeed. Was it the right time for those above to be moved on? Probably, but a case of too much too soon and within a short period of time the axe had come down.

It should be but there is a risk that the restrictions they’ve put on spending are going to reduce the competitiveness. It suits us next season but it will damage the EFL if the clubs with the parachute payments have so much more clout than the rest. We’re edging towards a situation where promotion to the premier league will be unrealistic for two thirds of the clubs in the league.

The year we went up our squad was nowhere near the levels of Leicester. Southampton or Leeds. I still can’t quite believe we did it. This year Leeds, Burnley and to a lesser extent dominated. Unless they are seriously mid-managed or a team hugely over-performs, the top two next season seems likely to come from the 3 relegated clubs and possibly Sheffield United if they miss out this season.

Ipswich for me got what they deserved this season.
I like and can well believe a lot of what you said.

But that last match last season where you beat us at our ground to confirm promotion.
You time wasted throughout , feigning injuries for coaching meetings on the touchline, yr keeper taking for ever to take a goalkick & all orchestrated by your "impeccable" young manager.

I thought you were exponents of the dark arts that day & would therefore have enough to stay up.
Not to be. Watch out Burnley ! They played this season like Ipswich did last.
@suffolkblue Ignore him, he's a cretin.

Hi,

Ipswich fan here. I watched both games, you were definitely the better side in both and yet again, just like the FA cup semi-final last year, didn’t get the rub of the green. Rotten way to lose a play off (much easier if you’re Bristol City and are just outplayed across two games) and on top of the way you lost the first leg it must be a really bitter pill to swallow.

This may be too soon, it may be too raw and let’s face it it’s none of my business but don’t be too downhearted. After 20 years away, it was like a dream watching my team go up last season, complete back to back promotions and see us finally return to the league we were in throughout my childhood. I know many of you in your 40s and older will have the same feeling about Cov. Your kids have never seen you in the top division and it would mean the world for them to.

For what it’s worth, I think you’ll be happier next season watching a good team in a competitive league than if you’d won last night and then won at Wembley. We went up on the crest of a wave, almost unbeatable for two seasons and with a man who I still believe despite relegation is the best young manager in the UK. The new signings in the summer were fantastic. Players were joining us who a year before would have been so far out of reach it would be laughable to even consider it (Kalvin Phillips, Jack Clarke, Sammie Szmodics and a host of others). The kits and season tickets with the with the Premier League logo, fixture list coming out and seeing we start the season at home to Liverpool etc etc. and then reality bites.

The Premier League isn’t all it’s cracked up to be for clubs like ours. It’s for the elite and those artificially bankrolled by billionaires who use it as a play thing. I can’t wait to be back in the EFL next season!

I honestly thought we’d be able to compete. I knew it would be a struggle but thought we’d have a fighting chance of survival. After a handful of matches though it dawns on you just how big the gulf is now. It’s not like when we (and you) were there before. Squads of the established clubs are so strong that they can loan you a player that can’t get in their squad that becomes one of your best players (Enciso from Brighton is going to be one hell of a player). On top of that the decisions all go the way of the bigger, established clubs, VAR is horrendous and the atmosphere when you go to the likes of Spurs, Man U, Arsenal and Chelsea isn’t a patch on what it is at the bigger championship clubs. The half and half scarves ar every game, tourists and day trippers, silly flares and pyros before every game, patronising media and so on make it all far less enjoyable than you expect it to be.

Anyway, a long rambling message from an outsider on a day when you’re feeling hurt probably isn’t what you want but keep the faith, look forward, get behind your team and see you next season when from what I’ve seen you’ll be up there again .
Great post mate, and very interesting, to hear your experiences from this season. You have made me feel better already.

Can we just get rid of this "unlucky" tag for coventry please?

Throughout footballing history defensive styles have won over other styles, notably Herrera in the 60's who won 2 x European Cups and 3 x Italian titles; euro 2004 - Greece who won the euros and of course Mourinho with Porto.

It is a legitimate way to play and I'm sorry but if the opposition cannot break that defence down and concede on the counter then they have been done like a kipper.

Coventry had 75% possession both games and could only score 2 goals in total - Sunderland had 25% possession both games, scored 3 goals and won.

Tactically Lampard has been done good and proper by Le Bris; no doubt about it - and even when Sunderland basically told you how we were going to play in the second game - the first clearly caught coventry by surprise - you couldn't beat us.

Sunderland lined up - gave you the ball for 75% of the game, were happy to do so - and there was nothing Coventry could do about it. We did the same with Sheffield United at home earlier on in the season and beat them as well - they couldn't break it down.

We might as well try it at Wembley and see what happens.

Thanks. If it’s made one of you feel better then it was worth posting.

What I have missed most this season is going to games, expecting them to be exciting and knowing that we’re in with a decent chance of a result. You can kid yourself and we’ve had a few great, surprising results (beating Chelsea at home abs Spurs away stand out ) but the realisation that clubs like Brentford, Palace, Brighton, Fulham and Bournemouth are light years ahead of you is tough.

The hope is to stay in the division long enough to eventually do as Forest have done.

If you want to see how sad it can be, the only joy Leicester fans have had this season is possibly preventing Forest getting Champions League, and us missing out last night. Now that is sad in terms of a seasons entertainment.

Definitely. To do that though you need a promoted team to scrape staying up the year before (not sure if this makes sense!). The teams immediately above is are Man U, Spurs and West Ham. That shows the level. First half of the season Wolves looked vulnerable but their quality (relative to the promoted teams) showed as the season progressed.

Honestly think it’s becoming a real problem for the premier league that fans specifically are finding it less appealing due to VAR and dominance of the elite clubs. When the European super league came about I was affronted. Now looking back I actually think it would be best if those top teams did leave, so we can have a cheaper, probably poor quality, but no less entertaining EPL and premier league.

Of course you'll try it.

Parking the bus and hoping you convert a breakaway chance is the only chance you've got of getting a result against a better team.

Enjoy your day out at our second home, see you next season.

Can't knock Sunderland for how they played. If they'd came out and played open football at Cov they'd have likely gone away a couple of goals down.

Not sure we were "done up like a kipper" though..... it could clearly have gone either way.

Its small margins.... missed chances, kamikaze backpasses..... We largely had the better of the ties, and were a last-minute header away from a "perfect away performance" again last night.

Sunderland rightly won't care and will point to the final score.... they had their share of chances last night as well and probably should have scored at least two (small margins again)

Apropos of nothing, but Portman Road is my favourite ground for watching football in.

The steep banked stands are brilliant.

Never seen us win there, mind.

Your 2nd at the CBS our player passed a short pass to our keeper ( its the definition of luck ), tactics played little part . That doesn't happen its 1-1

Last night we won 1-0 in 90 minutes and haji missed a sitter on the 92nd

Id say you had your share of luck over the 2 legs , like we did against Notts county in league 2 .

It happens it doesn't mean I think you're undeserving we all have luck at some point go our way .

Lampard certainly wasnt tactically out thought though , had haji converted on 92 youd all be calling for le bris head

As for Forest 😂😂😂. We’ve won more than I could ever imagine. Just a shame another club will ever win it away from the big six or seven.

I have a good mate who follows Leicester everywhere, and we have friendly banter and always wish each other good luck. He got me to join the Leicester Facebook group ( I never post) for a reason I've since forgotten, and last night we were being 'bothered about' , as it appeared on my Facebook feed. Haven't been back on there to see how much, but we are on the radar of some of your support.

tbf living in hinckley i was with a few Leicester fans this morning, aswell as other clubs fans, and every single one of them agreed we were so unlucky and said how we deserved to win - away from the keyboard warriors, some good friendly banter is great, but in the end we all want the same for our clubs - however in any season probably 80% of fans are somewhat disappointed

Come on, if you think Haji Wright and Ellis Simms have the same cult status as Liam Kelly and Marty Godden I’m not sure what to say. The “L2 to PL” dream died with Robins this is a new thing now and the likes of Wright and Simms couldn’t care less about the club, Lampard either really, we’re at that level where we’re a stepping stone now.
Lampard sounded distraught last night

I’m not having he doesn’t care, at all

I agree lampard cares and he was visibly upset last night .

The journey with robins was unique and not one thats seen at many clubs these day from length of tenure to achievements and almost the full house

players like godden fadz gave a much smaller more hard-core support base a great time under unique conditions and the togetherness was amazing .

We really shouldn't compare their tenures anymore and should all get behind what lampard is trying to achieve now , but il be more than happy to talk about his faults

That was the penultimate game of the season. A win meant we only needed a point from the last game to go up. Of course we did what we had to, every team would do the same. I couldn’t care less what fans of other teams think of us and if that’s your takeaway from what we achieved last season then fair enough. It does suggest you don’t want much championship football though. The football we played for most of last season and the season before was brilliant to watch. Burns goal at Portman Road against you being a great example of what we were about.
It was the first time I recall seeing players feigning injury to get a water break and a tactical chat from the gaffa on the touchline. Glad you were relegated. Sure though you will be favourites for a return.
