Good morning. I’ve no idea where it came from and I’ve never spoken to an Ipswich supporter who dislikes Cov but I’ve noticed a bit of needle online between some Ipswich fans and your fanbase. I’m assuming it’s just kids and keyboard warriors because I’m pretty sure most Town fans would wish you well as long as it wasn’t at the expense of us staying up. Personally I’d like all 3 promoted clubs to stay up. All the best for this season. A couple of questions for you - are you pleased with your transfers so far and has Frank got a free pass this season in much the same way that McKenna did when he got us promoted? Clubs sacking managers left, right and centre all around us and yet it was never really a discussion even when it was clear we were doomed in 24/25.

You’re probably not that interested but I think we’ve got a better chance than we did 2 years ago. Despite the fortune spent I rate our chances of survival at no better than 50/50 though We’ve got a new manager and pretty much a new squad. Wes Burns and Conor Chaplin leaving, George Hirst on his way (not too many will shed tears) all but sees the end of the group who brought the good times back to Portman Road. The team that starts on Saturday against Sunderland will be wearing a royal blue shirt with the Suffolk Punch on the badge so will have the full support of all Ipswich fans but there will be more unfamiliar names and faces than ever before. It’s effectively our third team in three seasons.

I agree it would be nice if a couple of promoted teams could stay up. I think you're probably better equipped this time, I hadn't realised how much of your L1 promotion team was still around when you played your first PL match a couple of years ago. It will all depend on how quickly your new signings settle. O'Neil isn't glamorous but he kept Bournemouth up in similar circumstances to yours, also did quite well at Wolves for a time so he's got some pedigree.

I'd be very surprised if more than 1 of the 3 stayed up and it wont be Hull. As far as needle is concerned i think there was a feeling of injustice around the game at your place (Hirst not getting a 2nd yellow) and general shithousing levels, Furlong in particular. As with anything these days the online losers need very little excuse to start lobbing nonsense at each other on Twitter.

Best of luck for the season, not too much though, i want at least you and Hull sitting below us by the end of it!

As long as that thug of a right back is nowhere near their team. VAR and get a red every week. Also be difficult for Ipswich without the 12th man every week

To be fair, most of them were decent championship players who moved to us in league one with the expectation that we’d go up. Watching Leicester on Saturday it’s mad to see the players they have in the third division. In hindsight we didn’t have a chance that year especially as our recruitment was based on signing the best players in the Championship (szmodics, Jack Clarke etc). The difference between a very good championship player and a premier league player was far greater than I and most fans had understood. It was very different to when we were last there 20 years previously when we went up and then with the same squad finished 5th, only missing out on the Champions League on the last day of the season.

My concern for Coventry is that you’re going to experience the same but maybe not. The team that got you promoted looked very good and cohesive. The key is whether or not they are physically strong enough. The premier league these days is filled with big, powerful athletes.

The refereeing at Portman Road in that game before Christmas was shocking. Either Hirst should have gone or your man shouldn’t have. That’s on the ref though, not us. We played quite well that day but it wasn’t a 3-0 game. I thought we were very good at yours after Christmas and deserved the win. As for Furlong, as with all shithouses, great if they are yours! He was at his best/worst on that night.

I think its just the cesspool of twitter mainly, no issue with Ipswich myself. For me Frank has a free pass as long as we make a fist of it, we know we're up against it, and theres a strong likelyhood we'll go back down.

I think Ipswich having that season has given them a bit of experience in whats needed in the premier league, I can only speak for us, in that i think we've taken a measured approach in our transfers, i think we've gone for a certain profile of player and despite what our owner said, i think we've very much used the Sunderland blueprint.

Looking outside in, it looks like you've followed Forest's approach, it seems more scattergun, I like Gary O'Neil aswell, think he'll do a good job, but given his Norwich connections, how much leeway will he get with you guys? he seems a bit of a loose cannon if the fans turn on him - similar to Nathan Jones.

For what its worth, i'm optimisitc for us and Ipswich. It seems like the Premier League has had a bit of upheaval in the middle teams, and a fair few can easily have a rough season, I'm looking at Palace and Fulham, and to an extent Newcastle and Bournemouth, you've also got second seasons for Sunderland and Leeds.

I'm not sure whats happening with Hull to be honest.

I know you can’t choose your owners but embracing Reform in the way Ipswich did was anything but endearing.
Agreed. It didn’t go down well with a lot of the fans, myself included. Rumours that players and McKenna were also unhappy. At best it was an unwelcome distraction arising from poor judgement. Our CEO and Chairman, Mark Ashton, is an egotistical prick but the success he has been part of mean that most fans will overlook this or at least accept it. I can’t wait for the day he leaves.

How will Ipswich do without refs gifting them a pen every 30 minutes at this level?

Think I started last season very ambivalent towards Ipswich, then over the course of a season where countless ridiculous penalty and other refereeing decisions went their way and the fanbase showed way too much arrogance for a team that got their pants pulled down in the PL, I took a strong dislike to them. We lost one game with a bent referee and another with illness having ripped through the squad, not so concerned about that.

That hasn’t really gone away over the summer to be honest, though I agree that the league needs promoted teams doing well. Hopefully if we come down it’s with a lot more humility but I doubt it.

As a fairly isolated City fan here in deepest, darkest Stowmarket I have nothing but admiration for what Ipswich have achieved over the last few years. I fully expect us to struggle this season but whatever happens I hope FL will still be in charge come the end of the season. My stepsons are both ITFC ST holders and wife also leans that way! Just hope we finish above them!

As with all clubs these days, the gobby minority on social media misrepresent the wider fanbase. What you saw on Twitter was not how the many Ipswich fans I know viewed things. We were pretty uninspiring last season given the resources available. Efficient, professional and at times lucky but there was none or the joy of the promotion 2 years earlier.

What I saw on the pitch did nothing to endear me to them either. Just endless favourable decisions from the officials on top of a bonus point against Blackburn you shouldn’t have got. Even with that, you barely got over the line.

It’s nothing personal, but by the end basically the whole division was rooting for Ipswich to mess up. Then Southampton’s cheating was exposed and there was a new pantomime villain in town.

Following McKenna is a tough, near impossible job. Despite our poor season in the prem and flaws last season he is loved in a way that only Sir Bobby was until recently. O’Neil’s appointment left most fans a bit flat. He’s not an inspiring, exciting choice but he’s made a solid start. Pre season results have been ok, some decent signings (on paper at least) and he’s said the right things. His Norwich connections have hardly been mentioned but whether that remains the case when we go on a bad run and suffer a few heavy defeats who knows.

I met a couple of nice fans in Birmingham City centre near the end of the season

I think the needle comes from the penalties that you kept being given and appearing to be favoured in all sorts of different decisions. Until that , there was never ill feeling or rivalry as such.

A fair summary. Two years before we were the good guys and Leeds were the team the rest of the league wanted to fail. If you go down, there won’t be the backing from neutrals that you got last season but you probably won’t care either. Premier League money, higher profile players, fans with a sense of entitlement aren’t endearing to others as you may find out.

We won't shed any tears about George Hirst leaving either. 👍🏻

I’m not really moved by Ipswich business. Lukic and Diop have prem experience but Fulham were happy to lose them to a ‘rival’. Enciso seems talented but not going to help the step up in physicality we’re told the premier league is.

I expect that would be the case if we went down immediately. I’m interested by the Forest fans who have been on here recently, as a club that also spent around 25 years messing around in tiers 2/3 before making it up. Now they’ve been up there about 4 years, they’re a fair bit more humble than I’d expected.

Obviously their Fat Tony owner is a crook, but it’s otherwise what I’d hope we can be in 4-5 years’ time.

I honestly can’t remember every decision for us but most of the penalties seemed right or on a couple of occasions were soft but followed us not getting decisions we should have. The game against you at Portman Road was refereed very poorly. We also got very lucky in a game at PR towards the end of last season against either Boro or Millwall (can’t remember which) when they had a goal ruled out even though the ball had not gone out before it was crossed. We had some poor decisions go against us too but I get they when you watch the goals and see soft penalties that is all you see. The main reason for the penalties was the amount of time spent in the opposition penalty area. We had no end of decisions do against us in the prem , despite VAR. both of our clubs will suffer the same again this year against the established teams, I can pretty much guarantee it.

Look at all the penalty decisions we weren’t given last season despite also spending a lot of time in the opposing box.

The argument doesn’t hold in my opinion, but I agree there will be all kinds of shenanigans going against us this season. I assume if we manage to score on Friday VAR will spend 10 minutes trying to cancel it.

That will definitely be the case. To be honest though, I think you’ll do well to keep it to less than 5. It’ll be the same for us and Hull when we play them, they’ve got a team who won’t make an appearance between them that would give any of the promoted teams a competitive game.

Always liked Ipswich as a place to visit - my problem has been the godamn awful stewarding they have, which has resulted in irate fans being unable to access their allocated seats, causing chaos on the stairwells, and then getting arsey as fans get rightly frustrated. My only real grumble - but it's happened on each recent visit.

Married to a Ipswich fan and living in Debenham I wish them nothing but the best as long as that best doesn't affect Cov!

You need to brush up on your optimism.

2bf I think it’s likely from frustration about the penalties, you always seemed to get a penalty when you needed one. When we went through our rocky spell, I’d imagine it got amplified worse than it actually was. We on the other hand weren’t getting decisions, and if you’re bored - go back through - huge frustration and worry by some that we were gonna blow promotion.

Conversely when we started winning again - it kind of became “Ipswich penalty lol” rather than the frustration we had in Dec/Jan.

It weren’t just us either - Middlesbrough were apoplectic When you got any decision - this coincided with them blowing up

I don’t spend much time on any forums. Other than TWTD, yours is the only one I’ve ever posted on. So no not really on forums, but enough to keep me happy in real life. Always quite liked Coventry and first posted on here the day after you got beaten by Man U, a travesty. Thought you seemed a good bunch so have posted a few times since.

Do you have real life mates or do you prefer to spend your time in the bedroom of your parents home behind your keyboard posting really witty material?

The 'needle' isn't a major thing - was just based on the ridiculous amount of favourable decisions Ipswich seemed to get last season compared to everyone else. There were times when we were predicting when you'd get a decision go your way and it was almost funny how accurate some seemed to be. The Farage thing wasn't great, but there'd be plenty of Ipswich fans who didn't like it either and if, heaven forfend, we did the same we'd probably have some supporters very favourable to his appearance.

As for the coming season, I think Ipswich have bought a large number of players but the impact they'll have is very variable. A bit of quantity over quality and flinging shit at a wall. I think it will give you a better chance than last time but for the level of investment I'd probably have hoped for a bit more quality in there.

I'm pretty happy with our business so far. Still got a couple of positions we need to improve but rumours suggest things are afoot in that respect and although we've signed players without much PL experience they're highly rated and could make us a lot of money in a couple of years. Don't think we've particularly got any 'bargains' and we've paid around current market value but they could be worth a lot more in future.

Still waiting for the last few pieces to fall into place but I'm feeling increasingly confident we can at least give a good account of ourselves and have a decent chance of avoiding going back down. Ipswich I feel could go either way. The players you've signed could perform really well and you'll stay up quite comfortably or they might not and you go back down with a bit of a whimper.

Time will tell.
