I agree with all of what you've said. I think some people class going to a city as going to the Wetherspoons near the train station or parking in an industrial/housing estate near a new build stadium, walking straight into the ground and saying what a shithole. To summarise any city based on a 20 minute view is childish.
I live in Chester now but partner's family are from South Manchester, and I've visited and enjoyed some great trips to Chorlton, Didsbury, Altrincham etc. There's a vibrant music/stand up comedy scene, restaurants and great nights out to be had across the Northern Quarter, all within a 25 minute walk of the train station if some people could be bothered to go beyond the Piccadilly Tavern.
I don't think there's any new build stadiums that are in good areas, and neither HR or the CBS were/are in metropolitan hotspots.
