A fine will do and a slap on the wrist. Stupid thing to do.

People most definitely shouldn't be defending him though. That's weird.

So you have never said anything like, 'that's gay' or 'you're a faggot'?
What he did was silly, but it's definitely nothing big.

Doubt you'll get any response. He'll be at the gay classic car show.

The club are most likely saying this for show. Otherwise they'll be accused of being homophobic. They'll tell Stokes to be careful in future and move on.

I assume you're joking but that is actually a thing now. There's 101 different terms. I think this is the one you want.

Cisgender is a term for someone who has a gender identity that aligns with what they were assigned at birth. The term was created for referring to "non-transgender" people without alienating transgender people.

Totally correct

If anyone doesn't know , stokes is of Irish travelling decent, basically Gypsy , not sure if he's caravan type like Freddy but Gypsy all the same.

I'm 100%sure he didn't know it was a uk gay slur , and anyone that is jumping on his back need educating in international linguistics

Not on social media when I'm in a very privileged position, no.

He was stupid. We move on. No massive issue, just don't think people should be sticking up for him. What's there to stick up for?

What about that Irish song that says youre a scumbag a maggot a cheap lazy faggot? I thought it meant something else.

Yeh it annoys me too. Want equality but going to have our own exclusive clubs that separate ourselves from everyone else...

The irony that Nick and others in this thread are missing is that gays and other minorities probably wouldn't need to organize themselves into minority groups if ignorant people like Chris Stokes just took the time to learn why certain words can be offensive to them. If people focused more energy on learning about that, rather than having a go at minorities for standing up for themselves, then these groups that are apparently so horrifying to some people would quickly have no reason to exist.

Learning to be polite about it isn't difficult, as Stokes will probably realize quite quickly. That's the part that shouldn't be a big deal - it'll make him a smarter, better person.

Of course he was wrong to say it, but he wasn't really preaching against gay people at all was he?

If he was saying things like being gay is wrong etc etc then I'd totally get it.

I'm white and real, does that mean I should make my own minority group because somebody says something about tall white people and then ask why I don't get treated the same? Or do i look at the context of things?

Of course there are real homophobes, racists etc but id say the problem is with them rather than the gay person. Surely they should be in a minority group?

Tall white people get everything, there's not much to ask for. The chances of my NBA career taking off however are getting slim.

I can't remember this Gary Deegan thing that keeps getting referenced at all. People on Twitter being stupid happens so often it doesn't stick in the memory too long.

McPake got called up to Northern Ireland and I think Deegan said "up the RA" taking the mick / joking about it.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...Coventry-suspend-Gary-Deegan-Up-RA-tweet.html

I don't think he said "I support the IRA" he just joked with McPake about his Northern Ireland callup, with him being Irish.

The most shocking part is James McPake avoiding injury long enough to get an international callup.

Not that straightforward though is it. Stokes used a word that has more than one meaning, people have made the assumption he meant it in a homophobic way. Same as the BBC suddenly decided it was homophobic in Fairytale of New York and banned it. Its not even a term commonly used in this country as an insult, its American and they often shorten it to fag so is that word now banned as slang for cigarette?

What about the n word? Seemingly its fine for it to be in 101 rap songs but if anyone was to shout it at a player at the Ricoh there would, rightly, be outrage.

It's all context. If someone in an office says they're nipping out to smoke a fag, everyone knows they're not about to film a gonzo murder porn. On Twitter and things like that, the written word loses that context and can be easily and readily jumped upon.

So lessons learnt - faggots are tasty brown balls of questionable source

We should not use the word anywhere but in the butchers or quicksave

Internal investigation also has a double meaning - this shouldnt happen in the butchers or quicksave

Come on man, if you're really trying to claim that straight white blokes face discrimination like gays or racial minorities do are then you're better off on a Donald Trump forum. It's the dullest argument going.

The word faggot has been used to make gay people feel like shit for years. By his own admission, Stokes says he didn't know that. What's wrong with teaching him about it?

As others have said, it's all about context. I don't think anyone on here thinks Stokes meant to be homophobic (at least not consciously). But again, by his own admission, he didn't realise the context he used was offensive to plenty of people. I'm genuinely surprised that people are more concerned about bleeping out a word in a Pogues song than they are about our own players embarrassing themselves and the club on social media.
