Apart from his flapping my main criticism of Burge is his kicking and the time he takes to get rid of the ball. Stockdale was excellent in all these aspects, and I never sensed anxiety in our defence...

I think you are missing the point. Stockdale apparently looked composed and in control when crosses came in to the box. Compared to Burge who plays like the ball's on fire when it comes into the box. I'm not convinced he is this outstanding shot stopper either. I think our expectations of goalkeepers have dropped massively over the last few seasons and he's been the best of a bad bunch

I think you are all being quite unrealistic in your expectations for our regular keeper.

The quality of players we have for any extended period is going to be lower across the board given the league in which we play and the wages we pay. However you won't necessarily notice that in all positions because the outfield players are against others of similar quality. However for two positions: goal scorers and keepers, it's more evident.

Having said that, it was the kicking yesterday that was so different: Stockdale placed the ball onto the head of one of our players every time he kicked. I'd forgotten that was possible but recall now how that was taken for granted in the past. It makes a big difference if you are conceding possession and impetus every time the keeper kicks.

I think Burge is off when his contract ends this summer but Stockdale would be a replacement that might suit a team challenging for promotion in this Division.

People go on about the great saves Burge makes the best goalies don’t have to make them as they are in better positions, our expectations have lowered over the years and this has allowed Burge to stay so long let him go and warm the bench in the championship as yesterday we had a championship teams third choice goalie in and he was way ahead of Bruge.

Stockdale did well yesterday, better than i thought he would do,my thinking on him was,if the guy is only here for one weeks emergency loan, then he wouldn't care to much about maybe conceding a goal or two,it didn't happen,we know that,Rochdale hardly threatened us,but when he was called into action,he did fine, next week we will have Burge back in goal,so what's the point on lavishing over some keeper we won't see again until maybe next season(perhaps)

Burge may be going to another club next season, and if so good luck to him, until then i will back him as he is still our keeper.

I was wrong on Stockdale,i admit, but it was only the one game and against a a poor Rochdale side lets not forget, Maybe he might be available for the Walsall game, "i doubt it though" just so the majority on here can make up there own minds,Listening to the game on the radio doesn't give you the full picture.

I’m not his biggest fan admittedly but I think it’s a bit much labelling him as poor. He’s not poor he’s just inconsistent and prone to silly mistakes because he’s never really grasped the basics during his development. So, once an experienced GK comes along his inconsistencies are just highlighted if anything.

I think the majority realise Burge is fine at this level but will never be more than that due to the limitations in his game. It’s no secret that MR has settled with the GK position for a number of years as over the past two summers he’s had to focus on spending the budget elsewhere. But given Burge’s contract situation I’m pretty positive he’ll look to invest in a new No.1. this summer.

Players that Burge has played with for years and knows inside out and I've never seen him positioning them or talking to them. He's too timid and in return his Defence are scared of what calamity he's gonna make if they let's the ball through.

Players Stockdale had trained with once and he came off the pitch without a voice because he was shouting so many instructions.

Exactly, another example was when he came running out to clear it. Our players just turned around and got up the pitch rather then having to babysit.

Doing the basics properly took the pressure off.

It was obvious, even seeing the game out there was no panic.

Obviously won't get to sign him in the summer unless he takes a massive pay cut.

We have ignored that position far too much and hopefully it means they will take a better keeper seriously

I'm not lavershing over a keeper we can't have, simply just pointing out over him doing the basics has shown Burge up for how poor he really is.

Like it or not Stockdale in his 1 appearance showed what happens when you have a decent goalkeeper in goal, as I said in a post on another thread, every time the ball came into our box I thought ohh heres the goal coming but Stockdale on numerous occasions just plucked the ball from the air and 'it stuck' ....gets my vote

He will have to reset his wage expectations at his next renewal so maybe he will try to negotiate a release payment from Birmingham to get some game time, don’t forget Birmingham will want him off the wage bill as good old Arry has left them in the shit (just for a change)

Glad we got the win and fully deserved, but i am certainly not getting carried away,we played a poor Rochdale side i believe who rarely threatened us,had we came away with a win at lets say Sunderland or Portsmouth yesterday then maybe, lets see if we can carry yesterday's good work into next weeks game.

According to a Blues fan mate of mine, he is on £35K per week, and they have huge financial problems.

It just goes to reinforce the gulf between League One and the Championship.

It will continue until a few clubs/players/agents have a reality check. Some years still, I fear.

Lets also be honest and say Burge has cost us at least two wins this season and no one has confidence in him when a cross or set piece comes in to take control of the his area, make a decision and claim the ball as his.

It’s heart in the mouth time every time a cross comes in to the area

Although Stockdale has been frozen out at Blues and is training with their U18's, he still has another year to run on his current contract, even if he is released he will have to take a big pay cut to come here.

Maybe we could get him on a season long loan?

I suspect that's the only way a player like Stockdale will come, with us paying part of his salary until the end of his contract
Decent keepers are at a premium so he's likely to have options at the end of the contract
Premier League and Championship sides like to have at least one competent keeper as back up to whoever is their number one
He's bound to have options once his contract is up albeit not on the ludicrous wages typical of any deal involving Harry Redknapp

Stockdale may not be in 40k, but yes still on A LOT more than the 2k we'd offer him.

He had a good game yesterday. He was extremely dominant in the air and distributed the ball quickly and efficiently.

However, Burge is a good keeper. He's kept us in plenty of games. He's not the issue in this team.

Joe Cole was on more at Villa than we could of offered him in wages. But with the settlement that Villa offered him to get him off their books he was happy to take a few extra quid from us in return for some game time and a bit of fitness etc.
I'm sure there are plenty of keepers in the Championship in similar positions that clubs are in a need to offload.

Harsh. Burge has done well for us. Judging Stockdale to be 'streets ahead' based on one game is ludicrous. I'd love him here - especially if Burge is off, but if he is that good why isn't he between the sticks at a higher club than Blues, or paying for their first team? P.S. I hope he turns out to be Gordon Banks Mark2, and signs for us next season.

I don't think it is that ludicrous. Stockdale competently caught more crosses in 1 game yesterday than Burge has caught all season.

Stockdale is likely out of our price range, but it got me thinking about other keepers and I’ve noticed Scott Loach (formerly of Watford and England U21s) is at Hartlepool, where he seems to be having a good season. 30 years old with good pedigree but his career seems to have taken a rather dramatic slide. Is it worth considering someone like that or too much concern over his fall from grace? I can’t seem to find any reasoning why it happened.

Stockdale commanded his six yard box something Burge very rarely does.

There's the picture on the article about his interview. He's come out and got in front of and higher than their 2 strikers to easily catch from a corner.

Can we honestly say burge does that? Half the time we are hoping for a foul. If he does catch it then it's cheered like a goal.

Burge has been a solid keeper for a few years now.

If Burge could command his area and work on his kicking, he would already be playing at a higher level, as his shot stopping is second to none.

I can't believe the slating Burge is getting on here for what, some guy from Brum who came here on Friday on a loan for a week, makes his debut "albeit" the only one game, does ok,not really tested, makes one reasonable good save, bread & butter for most keepers though and suddenly Burge is being frozen out, what ,after one game, against a poor Rochdale side, some need to get a grip
