I think Stockdale had a good game today, but all he done was the basics and only had 2 saves to make (one of which was straight at him).
His kicking was pretty accurate, he spoke to his defenders constantly, commanded his area and collected crosses. But he didn't do anything I wouldn't expect any professional keeper to do naturally week in, week out.

However, if you look at Twitter, Facebook, the telegraph etc, you'd think he had an outstanding game from the plaudits he's getting. For how much praise he's getting (for what was a pretty routine game for him) it just highlights how poor Burge really is. If people can still come on here and still say Burge is a good keeper after today, then I give up. Our main priority in the summer for me (and always has been) a new keeper. Closely followed by a striker.

I didn’t go today but just from reading the comments, does it actually highlight how poor he is, or just how disliked he is?

Burge has had 15 good games in 150. Good riddance

All Stockdale done really was one good save and caught a few crosses, yet people are amazed at how good he was. That to me highlights what people's expectations are.
Wow, he caught a cross, amazing!!! Why are people amazed at a keeper doing his meat and drink? Because we haven't seen it happen for 4 bloody seasons that's why!

We will have a more easier ride with an experienced keeper in goal, not to mention our defenders gaining more confidence. As much as I like Burge, I feel he’s too quiet and non commanding for this league

It was just refreshing to not worry about a simple catch and wondering how many more points we would have had with an other keeper.

Imagine on 88 at one nil up with crosses fired in with burge in goal? Panic all over

Burge should probably be having a think about how he will do in the championship.

Don't put that idea in his head. If he thinks he won't make it in the Championship he'll stay. Let him fuck off so we can bring in somebody new

He probably didn't have that much to do (though in part that may be because he was better at sorting out the defence). But after 20 or so mins I almost felt like I'd had a bit of a light bulb moment - I no longer felt nervous when crosses were going in. It seemed to dawn on me just how far our expectations over that position had fallen. No wish to decry Burge - seems like a good guy. But I do think we need to strengthen that area as a priority (after a goalscorer, of course).

Just hope a deal can be made to bring Stockdale here in the Summer.

There was that whiff of quality about him. When he came for a cross, you knew he’d make it. When he kicked it, you knew who he was aiming for and 9 times out of 10 he’d find his target. Some of the quick thinking, route one kicks were fantastic. No dilly-dallying around like that nervous, flaphanded, indecisive sheep we’re normally used to watching.

Hopefully today was a sign of things to come. Joe Murphy used to fill me with such confidence too. Ever since he left and we put the faith in the likes of Burge, we have always been prone to an error. I’ll give him his due and during the play offs and the odd game here and there, he’s earned us points but no way in a million years is he championship standard.

Exactly. He would come and catch it and then kick it quick.

Released baka and Thomas and the pressure was instantly off. With burge it would have been flapped at.

I have some sympathy for Burge as he gets a lot of flak despite being a decent shot stopper.....but it must be said, he doesn't inspire as much confidence as you would like. A QPR-supporting mate of mine once explained to me why Chris Day, who I'd always thought was a decent keeper, lost his place in their team to the likes of Fraser Digby, Lee Camp and Simon Royce...."they were better keepers than him". Fact is, Burge isn't the best we can do - there are others out there who could do better. If it's deemed a sensible use of funds, I'd support us signing Stockdale, or someone like him, on a permanent deal, and put Burge on the bench to learn from them for 2-3 years. But perhaps that's not realistic; perhaps he'd decide to leave and try for first team action elsewhere. I just think that when Murphy left he was thrust into the team before he was ready and has never lost his reputation as an unreliable rookie despite playing 100+ games for us.

He gets a lot of flak yes, but it's deserved flak. Nobody gives him flak for his reaction saves he makes. He gets flak for being an all round poor keeper.
He also never lost his "rookie" reputation because he never lost the rookie mistakes! Despite playing over 120 games for us

Just have to look at the Walsall incident and the similar one today where it was just cleared with no real worry.

I hope our scouts really are looking at Keepers who can do the basics. Not expecting a League one keeper to be like an outfield player with the ball at their feet and fancy. Just the basics would be nice

As an ex keeper I’m very critical of keepers and I’ve always stood up for burge on here - but that has always been on the basis he was better than rcc when he was here and much better than O’Brien.
I don’t think burge is a liability but if we want autos next season then I think an upgrade is needed

I thought Burge was our player of the season and the best keeper in League 1?

Stockdale is Birmingham's 3rd choice keeper and on 40k per week just a level above us. We're not dining at that table. Today he was calm composed and authoritative but I'd expect nothing less. Burge has faults but that''s why he's league 1 and I've seen a lot of other poor keepers in our leagues this season and last.

You pay peanuts you get monkeys and sadly we do pay peanuts.

When we've been conceding so many goals from set plays you appreciate a keeper that commands his area and takes control of set peice situations. He was vocal and in command, one of the first corners in the second half he cleared the six yard box off defenders and came out and collected the cross. Even when we were attacking he was outside his box telling Mason where he wanted him positioned for a counter attack. It was quite refreshing

Yet Burge would have flapped or punched those crosses Stockdale took with ease.

He took 6 or 7 crosses today. That’s about a months worth for Burge who would have missed or might or might not come for them which would have cost us.
You don’t really notice a decent keeper. They don’t need to make world class saves. They just need to be in the right place and make the right decisions.
It went unnoticed but about 10 minutes in he cleared a through ball. Not a big deal but he did it as his starting position was somewhere in line with the penalty spot. Burge would have started inside the 6 yard box and wouldn’t have got to the ball. Simple things that make a massive difference.

Good post. It’s telling that we were delighted with the performance of a keeper who did all the things you expect a keeper to do. It’s unlikely that we’ll be able to get Stockdale at the end of the season, but it’s been a real eye opener to the poor performances that we’ve come to accept from Burge.

I thought Burge had moved on and hoped he had become a keeper who we could be confident in. Unfortunately he has referred to type again and that stemmed from the Walsall game and he has not recovered. This shows a mental weakness which if anyone thinks he can play at a higher level than L1 they are in dreamland.
Stockdale (a reasonable keeper) showed up Burge today for what he really is-a poor poor keeper who we have been stuck with for years.

David Stockdale did well for us today, one good save and good command of the penalty box, catches and one strong punch. You could see his experience. However, he’s with us for a week- perhaps Walsall? And then Burge will be in goal for us for the rest of the season, so maybe rather than lusting after a goalkeeper we can’t have, perhaps we should get behind the one we have got for the remainder of the season.

If it's in the Birmingham Mail it must be true.

An identical clickbait shit ex-newspaper to the Coventry Telegraph.

He says [is quoted a saying, but I have no source and therefore claim fake news anyway] it's laughable that he is on £40k a week.

Therefore taken as a fact by some that he is.

No it was from the lads on the coach today but if that's already refuted then perhaps that was their source. Either way I imagine it is sizeable and beyond our means long term.

Lets be honest here, Stockdale had next to nothing to do and looked heavy on his feet, Yes Burge may not be as commanding in his box but god he is much more mobile and i would have loved to see stockdale actually make a difficult save.Give the lad a fair assesment, Burge actually spills VERY little and makes good saves, there is MUCH worse in this division. Stockdale had too make 1 save all game, not a fair assesment...
