My elder lads that support other clubs loved that stand. My eldest lad said that the only better atmosphere he has ever known was the Rangers v Celtic games.

Had a look at a few of these pics last night at work. Just had a good look at them now. Feel so sad. Had many great times. The last time I went to HR was after we had left. There had just been a fire above where the club was. Got pissed in there many times. I have never gone to have a look as I want to keep my memories as they are. Times change and we need to move forward, but change is not always good.

Think the WT was only raved about by hardcore WT attendees. Having had a season ticket in there myself (yes, as a teenager!) enjoyed the atmosphere.... but it was only upon sitting in other parts of the ground that you could see that the noise was not great and was easily drowned out by away supports. Quite often you could barely hear the WT from the East Stand.

Agree with everybody though...terribly sad to see HR go.... literally knew the place inside out having worked there too!!:(

It was louder than you are saying but atmosphere was not all about noise. You can always hear the fans closer to you. If the other ends would have made more effort more often it would have been a different matter. I went in the east stand if taking smaller kids. It was like a morgue most of the time. Singers corner is a bit like the old West terrace. Move away from there and you don't get the full effect of it.

That's always the case with every ground though, away fans start saying things like "we sang for the entire 90 minutes, home fans were crap and amongst the worst I've ever seen" whereas the home fans would say that they couldn't hear anything from the away end. If you're right in the middle of it then it will seem loud, move away from it and it becomes less so.

The west terrace did certainly make a lot of noise, unfortunately its low rough held the sound it so it wasn't as loud around the rest of the stadium.

As much as we'd all dream of being back at HR, no one can deny that what the Ricoh has bought to the City is fantastic.

Who would have thought that dear old Coventry would have hosted an Olympic Event!
Not just that but plenty of huge events, such as the future Rugby world cup and massive concerts such as, Coldplay, Take that, Bon Jovi and so on.

IMO the Ricoh is the best new stadium of our size in the country. The facilities it has as not only as a football stadium is quite amazing.
No stadium has an Exhibition hall anywhere near our size, one of the biggest casinos, hotels, restaurants etc.

But for many city fans, we don't want a casino, a hotel or an exhibition hall.
We want a stadium with atmosphere and excitement, sadly the Ricoh doesn't offer that.
Against Chelsea and Blackburn, it was quite an amazing atmosphere.

I hope one day that the Ricoh will host premier league football. I'm sure then most would finally see the Ricoh as a decent football stadium with 30,000+ people in attendance.

Dont forget that HR did host a World Cup Qualifier in the 70's Northern Ireland v Portugal my Mum got Eusabio's autograph for me when he went shopping at Owen Owen in Broadgate.

Miss Highfield Road with a passion ,started off in the kop aged 5 with my older brother and dad .Then when i was a teenager i couldnt wait to get in the West Terrace .Was a season ticket holder for 15 years .

Used to love the midweek games ,the walk from the Station and getting near the ground you could start to see the floodlights and the noise from the fans already in the ground.Walking into the back of the stand and down the steps to our seats into a sea of sky blue .

Great times , great days ,sadly now just a memory

If we get back to the Premier League then nobody in their right mind would prefer Highfield Road. A full Ricoh would pi$$ all over it.

Until that day comes though we'll keep having this debate.

I sat in the West Terrace for the final few years - but it wasn't the deafening atmosphere people are trying to make it out to be. Our supporters are the same now as they were then - armed with a small selection of unoriginal repetitive crap songs that nobody can be bothered with.

just sat at work looking through this, it brought so many good times back to me................then someone in my office calls me i turn round watery eyed and a lump in my throat! they asked me if im ok and i felt like a right plonker haha

Yeap, I'm in that picture somewhere!!! What a game, what day, Gibbo!!!!, we'll never get scenes like these again.

I as most of you sat in every stand. Mainly WT but I'll always remember when the east stand opened I had a st. Think it was one of our first home games maybe citeh and we won. Think dion and teller scored. The whole stadium standing singing dion dion duberlin for at least 5 mins. Fookin magic

I was there, sat on the grass in front of the west end, about 3 yards from the right hand post. (no, not in the goal mouth, the other side of the post..:D..) Celebrated on the pitch for the 1st 2 of our goals, but not for the 3rd. :)

Thanks for bringing all this onto the site Deano.

Note the price of ticket at five bob,typical adult car/tractor factory worker in 65 wage around £25 .

That makes it a mere 1% of wage assuming it was the same for a matchday or say double is only 2%.

Today as pay on gate at £20 would equate to 5% for someone on £20k. per an or 10% for younger/lower paid on £10k.

A car factory worker in todays climate on standard hours probably tops £25k. ,the average wage So 4% or two 2% if he invests in a season ticket .

Not so very different and in comfort with seat. amazing

Very sentimental post this and good to see. But that's all it is sentimental. It's history now. I was there through my childhood mostly on the spion kop, awash with urine feet from the toilet block, adults blocking my view, being rained but the football back then was far more exciting.

We are in a mighty fine stadium theses days (by the skin of our teeth at present!) and given either the Ricoh or Highfield Road the atmosphere would be just as bad with only 8k people in it.

Give me the Ricoh anyday. Fabulous views from all angles, better facilities, a whole different ball game and much improved for todays times.
I don't hate it, I embrace it. The thing I hate is the football we have produced there and the ownership of CCFC. Don't let that and sentimentality cloud your view.

Just wish we could be in the Premiership with 30+k every week and we owned the darn thing. We may all feel different then huh?
