Last Time Around

Thought it might be interesting to compare this season with our last Premier League campaign. No serious analysis just a straight comparison and I don't know wether to swap sides not in the division then with new ones but I'll see if it's of any interest.

Anyway, we got relegated last time with 34 points so we'd need to better this over the season to stay up.

First up, Arsenal away, an early season 2-1 loss.



Would be amazing to improve on that and get a point this time.

Tbh I think 34 might keep you up this season, but of course I'd like to us to aim for higher and more.

Last time we were perpetual strugglers, staying up most seasons by the skin of our teeth. And I suspect the best we can hope for in May is more of the same.

However, Doug has said he wants to compete. If we can survive a few seasons there's an opportunity to grow and perhaps threaten the top half of the table and a few cup runs. Much like Brentford, Brighton and Palace.

I'd take that. As clearly competing with the titans of English football is unrealistic. They have a monopoly.

I don't think it will; I don't think there are going to be many out of their depth this season; I don't see another established team crashing like Wolves.

Considering their squad was stacked with some of the best players in the world in that era I have never heard of the lad who scored the second Arsenal goal... Am I showing my young age?

Agree, but I think a lot of the big teams will take maximum points off many. Eg teams like Spurs last season 17th will take a lot more points this time around and that will even out how poor Wolves were.

Was at that one- think Marcus Hall hit the bar with an absolute howitzer of a volley after Hadji's goal?

Vernazza's only Arsenal goal too.

It’s not true we survived by the skin of our teeth each year at all. Out of 34 years in top flight on 24 occasions we finished above 18th place. The old First Division had 22 teams. For a few years only two were relegated.

Okay we never looked like we would win the title, but we didn’t struggle. Our Achilles Heel was lack of squad depth that sometimes sucked us into a relegation battle. But even then most years we were more than capable of surviving. I think you could could on one hand when it was really touch and go, but out of 34 years that isn’t bad.

Of course it is a different financial beast now and the task is even harder. But the first couple of years success will be staying in the league and building a financial foothold, we need smart recruitment and some luck with injuries.

The fans need a big dose of realism. Stick by the team win, lose or draw and make the CBS an uncomfortable place to come and play.

Lasst sentence of that is key. Points at home will be the key to staying up. Anything away will be a bonus. Whilst we're riding the crest of a wave and we have confidence / momentum, then tonight shouldn't be any more difficult than going to Hull or Ipswich despite their obvious quality. Get some points on the board early and then be consistent at home and I genuinely think we can do it.

I vaguely remember his name - more for Watford though than Arsenal

He didnt have a noteworthy career so im not surprised. These were probably my peak Champ Manager period so i've 'heard of' pretty much every player going in those days . From what i can recall he was an academy player that they ultimately sold/let go to Watford before he drifted down the leagues.
