There was a period of time where he was vaulted as some kind of misunderstood, profound intellectual because he, I dunno, read one book or something like that, when all he is, all he has ever been and all he is ever going to be, is a psychopathic scumbag from a family of psychopathic scumbags.

He's been given multiple chances that he did absolutely nothing to earn, refused to do anything but get consistently worse, and now I hope he goes away and is never given any kind of platform again.

As best as I can remember, he used to be a regular reader of the Guardian and thus gained a (wrongful) reputation of being intelligent in the dressing room compared to others.

His upbringing was terrible in one of the most deprived places in the country - But so were a lot of people's and they do not go on like he does, he is in for a lengthy stay at His Majesty's Pleasure and has no one else to blame but himself
 
It`s widely known, amongst the community that he grew up, that he played an active part in assisting his family members, who were complicit in the murder of Anthony Walker to go on the run.

Never forget.

Trial delayed and now back in jail on remand until March/April.

I know he's a scumbag, I'm not excusing his actions. I think I need to put that caveat in first before I say my piece :)

This is completely wrong imo. We've seen the state of the other guy, but we've not heard both sides and I know he was initially claiming self-defence. At a time when the prisons are so overcrowded that we're releasing convicted criminals onto the streets early, there is no excuse for someone to be help in prison on remand for that length of time, when he might ultimately be found not guilty. What benefit does that achieve? If he's convicted fine, but it does seem an inordinate amount of time.

And why the delay? Apparrently Covid still an issue in the courts. I don't want this one to go all left/right like so many other threads, but the fast courts that were put in place at lightening speed to deal swiftly with rioters etc, why couldn't that continue until any backlog is cleared?

More a general point about courts and prison spaces than this case specifically, but it does seem wrong, however odious he is.

His previous is a huge factor. He wouldnt be on remand if it was his first rodeo.

Massive delays in court time
Nothing special was set up to deal with rioters they pled guilty and therefore just needed to be sentenced
If they’d pled not guilty they would have then had to have considered whether they should be out on bail or remanded in custody. Depending on the violence and likely flight risk. Presume they think he’ll leg it if they bail him. Bail should be the expected course without good reason.
I don’t mind violent people being locked up

He`s also from a very nasty and infamous family, who have previous for serious assaults and pre trial witness interference / threatening. ( his cousin was part of the Anthony Walker murder and there were very strong rumours that Joey helped finance him fleeing the country )

You could argue that Joey being inside would do nothing to stop the rest of his family getting to the injured party and witnesses, but by keeping Joey inside, it sends them a message that this is being taken very seriously by both courts and the police.

His family are proper scum.

Struggling to see why it is in the public interest to release him on bail. I guess given his high profile and mouthing off on X, that they are worried about him prejudicing the trial. Quite difficult to impose sufficient conditions to stop him.

He is a serial offender and frequently ignores legal restrictions against him

He assaulted his wife and has already served time for violence and also has had other acts of criminal activity and affray.

There was also this random behaviour when he decided to stalk Jeremy Vine and his family and accused Vine of having sex with children. Despite injunctions he just carried on doing it.

he ignores the law. There is every chance he will re-offend
 
He also did have a suspended sentence over his head after the Vine case
 
All valid replies and as i said it's not really about him, more in general that 12 months on remand is too long, especially for what looks a simple case. It's not a murder and could be dealt with swiftly. I've no issue with him being locked up, but I have in the time it takes to convict.

And @pete the rioters were definitely fast tracked to court, not talking about pleas, I'm saying it still takes court time and if they can speed up for those, then why not for others?

I've just said not necessarily about him, more about being on remand for 12 months. Do you not think that's too long?
