In 87, as a top flight team we won the FA Cup.

In 26, to top the EFL having risen from the depths of D2 with very limited funds and all odds stacked against us for several years, is an infinity greater achievement.

I'm 60, was at the Cup Final and was 21 at the time. For me there'll never be a better day or achievement in all my years supporting City. What made the whole thing even more extraordinary is that we'd not had any success at all for a generation beforehand.

Promotion will be massive, but for my lad (he's 20 next week) and young people; they've experienced promotion, Wembley visits and relative success. Something I'd not experienced back in 1987.

Being in the PL will be a new experience for most fans under 40. It's all pretty incredible really.

I am 55 and was 16 when we won the fa cup I think it was a different era but was massive and meant much more back then, winning the fa cup was almost as important as winning the league title in division 1 (premier league) especially as english clubs were kicked out of Europe and it was one of only a few live games on the telly the whole season and meant the club were mainstream news so fa cup was more important then but not sure about in the modern game now it will probably be promotion to the premier league.

Winning the championship will be bigger because it’s now. History will dictate the FA Cup win was fantastic but let’s be honest the manner of our win was truly special in 87 but us, Luton, Wimbledon, Oxford won at Wembley during the post Heysel period when European football was off the table.

The F A cup is the second biggest domestic trophy. The team had won nothing of note - it was clearly the better outcome. Wembley now has been pretty diluted but you can see when we are there the excitement

Of course it’s much harder to win the championship as it’s a marathon and not a sprint.

People talk about unique circumstance that makes it different but it’s not that unique. Wolves went through similar depths and Middlesbrough had a lock out in the 80’s

it’s harder to be the champions but not a bigger achievement

I started this thread knowing it’s all pretty relative to age and what you’ve experienced with the club.

I was lucky to see us in the top flight for 30 years before being relegated and although I was lucky enough to be at the FA Cup Final I think this season has been an incredible experience and awesome for our younger fans who will never have seen us in the top flight.

Other than financially, FA Cup win was bigger IMO.

Plus at that time if we had been allowed into Europe I think there were only three spaces for English teams in Europe per season so it would have been massive.

Saw a similar question posted on Facebook, which I couldn’t understand, as for me the FA Cup win will always be our biggest achievement to date, even if/after promotion is secured.

The whole cup run, the excitement in the city and how everyone was behind the club was huge as was the day, the night celebrating after, and the parade the next day were immense.

But……as one of our older generation of supporters I think of fans like my son who is 25 who has seen some success, but at a lower level and just wondered what other fans, certainly ones younger than me (mid 50’s) think?

I remember when we won the cup it felt like the whole place was buzzing for months…after the semi final really.

That semi final was magnificent too mind. We went to that and I have memories of driving back through the city and people coming out of their houses to raise a glass/cheer as the returning cars beeped their horns.

Am I right in thinking our game wasn’t shown live?

It was shown on delay, what that delay was Imnot sure. But think it had started on TV while the actual game was still going on.

Yeah that’s what I thought. I thought it was as they were showing the other game…Watford vs Spuds.
I also thought it finished just as we were getting back but could be wrong.

Our kick off was delayed by 30 or so mins too…and we got there 4 hours before the scheduled kick off! Still, got the pick of where to stand.

In terms of significance for this football club then yes it's bigger than '87.
In '87 we were in the (now) premier league. For the last 25 years we have suffered humiliation on a scale unprecidented and are now about to put that wrong right. The Cup is a one off and pushed into the history book, but this promotion changes everything at the football club with a return to the top table of the world leagues. Money, growth reputation all will be up there with us. The big time will be confirmed on Saturday. For generations of fans who have not even known us in the top flight it will be an awsome moment. I'm still pinching myself that we have actually done and are back!

The way football is currently, the huge financial gulfs between clubs in the same division - including the Championship - the advantages that teams coming down from the Premiership have and where we have been as a club....

If we WIN the Championship, this is a bigger achievement than when we won the FA Cup.

We should be nowhere near the top 3 let alone winning the thing!

This is the biggest thing to happen to our club since the Fa cup victory.Football has changed due to Sky money so going to the Premier league is worth millions and could if done properly set us up for years to come.The first thing we should do for me is if buying the stadium was a loan the interest alone will be extortionate so we need to pay that off.People will know better than me if that is the correct thing to do,as it will give the club a solid foundation for years and also help it grow.But staying in the league for more than one season would be fantastic and very profitable if Financial matters are kept in control.

As a prestigious achievement, the FA Cup; however in terms of the clubs finances, it's not even close, as accessing the PL riches is on another level, and sets up the club for years to come (unless we spend it on half a dozen Yakubus)

If you’d asked me several years ago which is the bigger or most significant, I’d probably have said nothing would compare to the 87 FAC. I was fortunate to go to every round that year and the buzz just got more intense each round.
However, if you gave me the choice of winning the 26 FAC OR we get promoted as champions, I’m afraid I would say promotion every time. At this point in time the prospect of getting back to where we belong is huge.
I know some of you believe that FAC has been diluted and not as prestigious as it once was. But come on, the prospect of us playing in the best league in the world, watching some of the best players in the world every week, the excitement of building a squad to hopefully stay up.

Thinking about this I recall a number of attendances that 87 FAC year under 10k, and possibly as low as 8k. This year we’re packing out our stadium every week. The buzz in the ground this season is definately bigger and i personally feel more significant.

Just wondering what the sponsorship deals are going to be like next season with world events, can imagine Newcastle and Manchester city are going to be getting into problems.
