First 7-8 he was dynamite. Even the other week he came on against someone, can't remember who, beat 4 players with direct pace. We literally now have no one in the team who is quick. The championship thrives on pace

Couldn't see him getting in to the team over Sam, didn't appear Robins saw him as a regular starter.

I think it's a shame as I really rate him going forward. I'd rather have him near the opposition penalty box than McCallum, yet I'd prefer McCallum down the other end.

I think Robin's just prefers the increased likelihood of a surer defence

We completely wasted him. Someone like him who can run with the ball at pace and create chances should have had tons of opportunities in our midfield. But we insisted he was a wing back against all evidence instead. Oh well.

To be fair(!), one of the reasons we got him initially over others was that Wolves see him as a wing back and wanted him to be developing in that position rather than as a winger for Shrewsbury.

I find it a shame as the first 5 games or so he looked brilliant. His decreased involvement has coincided with our defensive solidity and reduced attacking flamboyance. Ah well, it probably makes sense as it solves the loan issue.

Which given the rate we shipped goals early on makes perfect sense.

A shame as he is a threat and good backup at lwb

However hes nowhere near as good as mcallum. But we need to get replacement in now incase of injury

He should have been played more at tip of box. Much better than Shipley

According to transfermarkt McCallum has as many assists (1) and more goals than Giles.

I think everyone wanted it to be true, but he'd never really played LWB until this season with us, and we shipped goals so fast with him there that Robins soon brought in McCallum to replace him.

I don't think he would have answered our prayers as a No. 10 specifically, but I do think he offered attributes in the midfield that no-one else in the squad has. That's where he'd stood out in L1 last season, at least. But we never even tried because we'd all pigeon-holed him as a LWB. Maybe that was the whole point of the loan - if he is an obvious wing back as you say, then I can't say he's likely to be a very good one for a while.

I liked Giles but imo opinion McCallum is the better all round player.
whether him going opens the door for someone else we’ll see but that takes us over the maximum 5 subs which is annoying as two of them Sheaf and James all being well are possibly signing on regular for next season.

That's correct.

In fairness to Giles though, his Expected Assists (xA) is good at 3.54 compared to McCallum's 1.15 - seems we've just failed to capitalise on the chances.

He was never going to work in our system. And completely disagree he was the most EFFECTIVE link!?

A wing back will never work in our system that plays wing backs? Interesting take.

And yes, most effective. Pushed us forward more, got more crosses in, more successful dribbles. Actually gave the opposition something to think about.

Shame, rated Giles but I guess until Kelly is back he was always going to be the loan that was left out.

Any chance we dont loan this Scottish lad back now then?

Thats a problem when our wingbacks are our only attacking outlet though. Fair enough in a back four with AMs, but we basically play 3 CBS and 2 or 3 DMs. To want to play fullbacks at wingback for their defensive ability is nuts. Basically gives us a flat back five with three DMs in front.

We will go down if we go into the remaining games with ten men behind the ball and no attacking players. Our defence and GK aren’t good enough to soak up pressure for 90 mins against Championship forwards.

Can't blame them.

It's a shame we had the striker injuries otherwise we wouldn't have needed an extra loan there and we'd be able to keep him.

I guess we'll have to recall Mason now.

I actually thought Giles was a class act as a wing back; one of our best performances this season was against Norwich where he and Dabo dominated on both sides. It pushed Norwich back and gave great options for our midfield.

There was a myth on here that Giles couldn't defend - based on something someone had no doubt read on the Wolves fansites or heard down the pub from their mate Dave. I didn't see any evidence of that in his performances for us.

McCallum to be fair has also been very good at LWB; we forget he's only 20 and wasn't even in the professional game 2 years ago. But we should have used Giles far far more.

My biggest worry at this time is that we don't have a natural left hand side central defender; Hyam has been badly exposed in that position from time to time as he's right sided.

Now it makes sense as to why Robins stopped playing him, 1 loan too many and someone had to be left out

We already see how few assists Dabo has, despite a number of excellent crosses every match, because he gets level with the box and has no-one to aim for. So there's no point doubling up and having two wingbacks bombing forward crossing the ball into 1 striker, who isn't especially good at heading the ball anyway.
We have to get a better 2nd AM so that we can play more effectively through the middle if we are going to persist with the box formation. We need to retain possession long enough in the opposition's half so that we can get the AMs into the box and the 2 deeper midfielders to within a 30 yard shooting range.

And his one goal and assist this season came playing RWB when Dabo was injured.

Giles is clearly better going forward, and McCallum is clearly better defensively, which I agree with Shmmeee that when you're you're relying on your two fullbacks being the main attacking outlet is bonkers to then choose the better defender when you're playing 3 centre halves and 2 defensive midfielders.

Would have liked to see Giles play ahead of McCallum in a 4-4-2 formation - in reality MR was never going to be this attacking and so tbf it made sense for him to go back especially as we had six loans takes out the need to leave one out of the squad.

I do think McCallum is better overall at LWB particularly defensively - however wish the lad luck hope he does well apart from when he plays against us later this season! Good luck Ryan.
