Disgraceful (12 Viewers)

Not really sure how it can be a policing matter when at least 20k other people in the stadium regularly appear to commit public order offences and the police do nothing

Because it’s another one of those ‘just don’t get caught’ things. And he was. As are most when they step out of line.

in other words the police only do their job when it’s an easy target

Or when it's in the public interest. Would you be happy with a police officer spending all their time trying to identify 20000 people that may or may not have been chanting something, in which you would find it hard to prove what the words were they were using, or would you rather they concentrate on being visible on the streets and acting as a deterrent...or can they not win whatever they do?

Moaning about police acting on a crime is a new one

Durham Police should also have a quiet word with this chap...!

To be fair some of our own fans in the 80’s used to say a lot worse about Jimmy Hill when he was alive

Durham Police should also have a quiet word with this chap...!

And we should probably be having a word with whoever is maintaining the memorial garden. Hope thats an old photo and things have improved because it looks in a terrible state.

Exactly and are the Sunderland fans going to criticize their own fans for the song about Jimmy Hill in a box.

If you report a malicious communications to them and use that as part of your evidence then they of course have a duty to take out a report and investigate it (the memorial garden tweet, as I would assume the top tweet does not actually meet the threshold). That would be more in the public interest then the scenario given before about 20000 fans singing a chant, which is very hard to prove

You either arrest someone in order to interview them if they're a suspect (which he is) as it is part of the interviewing process, or you ask him to attend on a voluntary basis.
I would assume because of his age, he was arrested, taken through to the custody block and immediately bailed to return for an interview at a later date as there is not much necessity to take away his liberty, but there is a need to process him formality and impose the restriction of him probably being banned from football events (as part of his bail) and to return to the station on the agreed date.
Or they could have interviewed him there and then if they had the capacity to do so.

Why would they need to search his home? He hasn't been arrested for an offence in which there is outstanding items and seizing his phone would not prove anything other than his search history including Bradley. However this can be proven without the need to seize a phone as there is video and photographic proof already
They could possibly want the phone to review messages for intent and see if it was pre-planned (and therefore had time t think about it ad back out and also be aware of the back story) or a stupid spur of the moment decision. Eg if him and his mates had been discussing anything on WhatsApp about the intentions or about Bradley. I'd be surprised if they don't go through his messages to look for a pattern. And I'm not condemning him btw, I was no angel and would almost certainly have got myself into trouble if phones and social media had been around when I was a kid instead of kicking a ball about the street.

Going by their forum, a fair few do criticise it....... however a lot more don't, seem to think its fair game. And obviously it seems to get sung by a hefty chunk of their away support.

To be honest i've been surprised it wasn't picked up more in the past few years..... its only really this game where its really been called out.

Perhaps Sunderland fans could make the gesture to stop singing it, and maybe the clearly strained relations between the two sets of fans would calm a little..... because the way its going i can see it booting off again, either up there or at the next home game.

If he has handed himself in, then obviously he would be arrested, it is formality as he is the suspect in a public order crime.

I'm sure the bailing will be so they can either refer him to the Youth Offending Service (YOS) or to follow up on some other enquiries.

It will all be a formality
Which is frankly overkill.

Freedom of speech extends to things that are disgusting and in very poor taste. I don’t agree with what the boy has done at all and a really stupid decision he’s made shouldn’t ruin his life.

He’s not a criminal. Needs to learn a lesson but criminal proceedings is just ridiculous.

… If that’s the law, it needs changing.

I’ve come across Sunderland fans a few times on England trips and they will casually say Jimmy’s in a box to your face. It’s not normal and no one would deem it ok to make jokes about the Munich disaster or Hillsborough in such a blasé way to Man U/Liverpool.

The outrage over Bradley Lowery is justified, but Sunderland fans routinely jeering us over Jimmy Hill doesn’t exactly place them on a moral high ground.

1 idiotic 14 year old boy does not change the fact that a lot of Sunderland fans are guilty of hypocrisy.

Last time I checked, the police have an obligation to uphold the law consistently and without fear or favour.

You seem to be in agreement with me that it would be difficult for them to fully enforce public order laws in the ground, so they just don’t bother.

Not quite correct. The necessity to arrest a person rather than invite them in for an interview must meet at least one of six criteria.
1/to ascertain your name
2/ To allow them to obtain your address
3/ To prevent you causing harm to yourself or another person or damage to property
4/ To prevent you causing harm to a child or other vulnerable person
5/ To allow the prompt and effective investigation of the offence or your conduct
6/ To prevent the disappearance of a person wanted in connection to an offence

His age is not necessarily a reason to arrest him or not. You would need to show the proprtionality of it under one of the above criteria.
They mY need to search his home to seize evidence which in this case is his phone. A video from another person of the incident is not primary evidence and has no continuity especially if that person hasnt come forward and provided a statement or surrendered their phone recording so the evidence is on the suspects phone. Thats why they may need to search the house if he hasnt bought the phone to the police station.

If they wish to impose bail conditions then he will have to be arrested for this to be completed. You cannot impose bail conditions on someone attending for a voluntary interview. Given the way his photograph has been put all over social media and some of the comments circulating from idiots I would also sugest that bail conditions may need to be imposed to prevent harm to himself ie not to attend the cbs or area as defined on a match day

These are thick Mackem trolls you're talking about!!!!! they don't have any self-control, look at the numpty shouting at Jimmy's staue as an example!!

I was thinking something positive would come of this, but obviously not, this now will be used to benefit two things the manufactured rivalry between clubs and the police who get another solved crime stat to pass to some Westminster suit to spin to the sheep.

All the families now are being used and that is so sad, should of been dealt with better than this. The boy needs educating not arrested and Bradley's family need peace and support, because they will suffer forever for a loss of a child. The boy done wrong nobody should defend his actions but someone should of been big enough to resolve this without the police, world has gone mad,.
