Clive Eakin on CWR (19 Viewers)

This would be a huge mistake, the demographic of people who listen to CWR for match day commentary I would imagine skews older. If they go after a young audience they'll just loose listeners.

Didn't we have a season where the commentary was on a commercial channel as well and nobody liked that because it was a 'different' style.
Maybe? Demographics have massively changed in ~25 years since Clive started and particularly in the last 5 as the club has become more successful, got a wider audience and boosted attendances. Media landscape has totally changed too.

I can see the argument for things being radically different... I'm OK with fancasts and all that jazz (I just won't listen), but would like the core product - football commentary - to stay sane!

The hour with Clive was a lovely listen and quite emotional particularly the little compilation of some of the commentary on goals over the years. He will be so sorely missed, Rob Gurney in his lukewarm tribute made mention of the fact they won't try to replace him but do something different... I really hope we get someone impartial even if they're not like Clive.

I know I am firmly sounding like an old man but the "bants" / "limbs" modern take on football leaves me pretty cold, I hope CWR don't desperately pander to modernise and bring in something that takes away from actually just describing the game. Listening to other iFollow audio streams at games over the last few seasons, you really grow to appreciate the way Clive & Oggy do things.

Particularly enjoyed the tributes from Oggy, Clive Tyldesley and Stephen Pressley... Robins' was almost like he was being held at gunpoint, which is fairly typical :D .

Yeah, if you're ever listening online and it gets to the 3pm kick off where it switches over from CWR to that 'Squad Goals' show, it's like that. It's unbearable.
I think everything on CWR (and local BBC radio in general) football aside is pretty outdated and a bit cringey now, but they really should keep the same format for the football coverage.
The Monday fancast is a good meet in the middle approach I think to get younger listeners, but keeping to the same format

Yes. In its final few years Mercia started its own coverage with Dave Bennett as a commentator.

It wasn’t all bad, as it’s the only time I’ve ever heard a professional commentator refer to one of the clubs directors as a prat (Benno on Orange Ken when he sat in the dugout)

Its a shame Clive is gone and I wish him well in whatever he does next, I was making my way through the city centre yesterday past the HMV Empire after 5, as I was walking I noticed some bloke filming and was wondering what he was doing then I saw Clive taking some pictures of the venue, I stopped and asked if I could get a picture with him, got a few snaps and said:

'I'm gutted your leaving Clive, but good luck in whatever you do next'

He shook my hand and said thank you, I didn't press anymore as he was going in and looked like he was on a tight schedule, top bloke

Hits doing exactly what they promised the radio authorities they wouldn’t do when they took over so many stations.

Assume some sort of minimum legally required period has expired.

Pretty shit how little local radio programming there is now.
Yep, JD who does the announcing at The CBS was made redundant and hosted his final show last week I believe

His show was not my cup of tea, at all - But it is pretty bad what is happening to local radio

How can the council control what the BBC reports exactly?

I think the BBC Charter would be what’s stopping a presenter calling a local sports team a bunch of cunts TBH.
Maybe I am reaching but being as the council flogging the ground was local politics and BBC's policy is to remain strictly impartial maybe Clive was pretty restricted on what he could and couldn't say

You are reaching. FFS it was Simon “the council are evil wankers” Gilbert reporting for the BBC for most of it. He might know football but Saddles source is clearly making shit up about this.

Can definitely see Clive back- there is no back up anymore for Gurney. Especially if he has one of his sweary episodes again.
That Lorna had her show canned and made redundant a couple of years ago but now seems to be on CWR more than she ever was such is the lack of depth on local radio

Thought Clive was his typical self, humble and less than forthcoming . He seemed to be taken by surprise by the relatively obvious questions and hadn’t prepared any answers to most of them !
Best bits were the road trip stories with him, Oggy and Andy Turner in the CWRMobile to away games.

I thought the two biggest things they could have done was try and make the programme 90 minutes, and also take questions before so he was a bit more prepped. Although I do like the off the cuff stuff it would have been better if he didn’t have to think too much about some of the answers.

but it’s nice to hear someone who whilst is a professional in his own right, how starstruck he sounds when talking about working with Oggy, speaking to Lampard every week, and even Clive Tyldseley.

gonna be Lorna isn’t it I’d imagine, with Rob doing the commentary again and maybe young Will stepping up?

I'd like to see a duo of Oggy and Dave Bennett next year, I know Dave has done games over the years, he loves the city and is a top bloke, Rob will be there aswell so that would be a cracking team imo

No thanks.

Gurney himself is too emotional in my opinion.

Bennett would probably spend most of the game talking about how it wasn’t like that in ’87.

If we’ve learned anything from Clive it’s that we want a decent commentator probably with zero links to the club.
Oggy is the ex player / coach , Rob the life long fan, you just need someone who can actually commentate and isn’t afraid to ask proper questions in the post match managers interviews.
