this isn't a debate on the abilities of grimes which is a different question, it's that the pressing system was completely wrong for the opposition we were playing.

Our defensive shape was 5-4-1 but Onyeka was asked to push on and press the CBs alongside the striker. The issue is we then didn't move anyone else around to cover the gap so we ended up with only grimes in the midfield against the 2 Brighton midfielders and the 10 dropping in to there.

Grimes may not be of the level needed but we could have had Rodri in there and the issue is the same, 1 player vs 3 is a massive over load.

according to sofascore and Fotmob, Grimes was more advanced that Onyeka in the main, so not sure he was pressing that much further ahead than Grimes in all honesty. But i agree whatever the system is, these 2 together are not the answer.
 
From those heat maps it suggests a right side tendance so who gets involved on the left?

no, the issue is there is currently no one free to pass it forward to so it gets recycled around the defence but dropping deep to collect the ball is something virtually all teams have a player doing.

The "grimes issue" is not in isolation.
 
I saw at least 3 times rudoni come infield for a ball that needed to go only 15 yards between two players and grimes would only pass it sideways.

Then it gets recycled around the defence.

Grimes and Onyeka were pressing because EMC and Rudoni didn't really know what they were doing. Grimes was pressing more than Onyeka though and was often running up to press.

Then when a manager changes he wants a whole new squad because the current lot aren’t his style.

We didn’t recruit heavily under Lampard until this summer because King was convinced we had a “top 6 deck”.

I did go to the game but i thought they both pressed and both sat too deep at times. Heat maps proved this so i am not sure he was left on his own that much. I agree with @Nick that EMC and Rudi both didn't know what they were meant be doing. Rudi doesn't really offer any width in that position as he likes to come inside a lot which is fine if Milan was overlapping, which is something were doing well during that good spell in the first half. But there were times when he and EMC were on the same side together which caused problems in itself.
If you want to play 343/541 you need 2 outstanding physical midfielders.
 
Think people are starting to realise that the boo boy of the last 2 seasons is actually a pretty decent goal scorer…

An interesting comment from EMC in interview after BHA game that he was learning the new system etc. that is part of the issue. Too many moving parts.
 
Looking like our signings were over hyped hope they can show some qualities or we will struggle to recoup the transfer fees next summer

I don’t think I’ve seen a player whose delivered so much as Wright get so much abuse on here or at games - if you take Gyokeres out the equation he’s far and away the best forward we’ve had since PL relegation

I had this moronic conversation with this couple in front of me at the game Sunday - just kind boggling

Yes, Wright is better than Awoniyi. His injury has cost us a lot. Not least some cash for Simms..Wright is a quality operator.
 
I think Grimes and Onyeka isn't working, whether that is the players themselves or the system is up for debate. Against Brighton they were always too deep, often on the edge of our own penalty area. That allowed Brighton to pass it round in our half under no real pressure.
They have so far looked like they have been chasing shadows as the pace (and I mean speed of thought here rather than physical speed) is so much quicker in the Prem. In the championship Grimes was good at reading the play, intercepting or knowing when to tackle, in the Prem he's trying to do the same things but the ball has already been passed on to the next man by the time he's in the position to do any of that. Same with Onyeka.
Whether they can improve and adapt we will have to wait and see. Personally I would play one of them with Yirenki as he is much more dynamic and gets in quicker, although he's attack minded so it's possible he'll get caught out of position more.
