So with rushworth inbound, and a few others in, i thought top wage was around £25k ish last season? what would we imagine we'd be paying these new recruits per week?

I'd have expected 50k p/w (ISH) to be our new ceiling.

I'm sure someone posted somewhere on SBT the wage bills in PL last season & I think £60m is lower than the lowest last season which was Burnley's. I think Wolves had the 2nd lowest at over £100m.

Yeah - mines a rough guess at £60m. The scary thing is it will probably be dwarfed by the teams in 16th and 17th

£60m would be low on the average wages to turnover ratio compared with most teams in the league, assuming turnover next season is somewhere around £120m (though not sure if it's greater still at group / arena level)

It was fag packet maths, whilst i'm confident we'll spend competitively, I'm not sure Doug will push the wages/turnover to the limit. We're operating towards 85% aren't we? that includes fees and wages.

But the AVERAGE wage in the PL is £80k pw!

Obscene as it is, I've been expecting up to be having to pay £50k pw just for squad players and possibly up to £75k for the 'star' signings.

The big thing isn't us paying these wages in the PL, it's making sure you have the relegation wage reduction clauses in the contracts. But even then if an average is £80k a week even halving it is £40k (or £2m pa) and that's not sustainable at the lower level. So in some cases you'd have to be looking at adding in clauses whereby players wages would have to decrease by 4/5 or 3/4, and would anybody accept that kind of reduction?

If you're signing someone for 20 million and giving them 50k a week on a 5 year deal you're probably not getting much change out £34-35 mil with the signing on fee etc. Get a free transfer in 100k a week over 5 years and we will be much better off. Even more so if we sell them after 4 years. Wouldn't surprise me if we pick up a free transfer on way over 50k.

A highly paid free transfer could be harder to shift if they flop, especially if we're also relegated.
No matter what fee we would be looking for, who would be offering them close to £100k to move in those circumstances?

There's more room to cut our losses if they are on a "reasonable" wage.

It depends on the quality of player. If they were on 100k at their last club and we can match that then the risk is negated. Look at Henderson now going to Chelsea. No resale value at all but worth it too them. That might be an extreme and I'm not saying sign Henderson but for the right player it's worth it.

You wouldn't be signing a 26 year old championship player on 100k a week but a proven Prem player you might as it negates the risk.

King will have been smart enough to put hefty wage cuts on relegation and relegation release clauses on some players so that we’ll have money to play around with in the worst scenario. He’s a very smart businessman and I trust him to keep the club afloat

Got to be £45k a week plus for any new signing otherwise they aren't coming

Give them a massive signing on fee and then cap weekly wages? There may well be ceiling but there are other incentives.

This is why the Premier League isn’t the golden egg it seems, it brings ridiculous transfer fees and ridiculous wages. I am surprised a few on this thread seem surprised at the level of wages required.
