Who is responsible for Recruitment (1 Viewer)

Said in another thread but it’s the persisting with Grimes that is our issue. Hes just not mobile enough or strong to compete at this level. All that money spent and we didn’t sign a proper no 6 Xhaka type signing to replace him with. Grimes and Onyeka was our championship midfield last season. Just simply not good enough for this league.

4atb or 5atb it simply doesn’t matter if it’s Grimes in front. Can’t offer protection and the game passes him by. The amount of times Brighton players received the ball unopposed 25 yards out Sunday was frightening.

Recruitment looks to have been ok to me. The only two that look a bit questionable are Hamer and Cherif. Cherif it’s obviously hard to say at the moment. Hamer - I’d love to know whose signing that was. I suspect it was more of a PR stunt than a football decision.

5atb won't work with two full backs who are as impotent going forwards as the ones we have got.

There needs to be wholesale changes to the team if we want to get better, but sadly full back was another position we didn't upgrade. We have many wingers but now we are not playing them as we've switched our formation after two games.

Time to get the chalkboard out.

grimes was the least of our problems Sunday

the full backs are fine for our original system of 4-2-3-1 and JDS has been probably our best player.

we'll also switch back to a back 4

Absolutely mate. Neither scored last season and Dasilva has never scored a single goal for us and tends to wrack up a pretty measly amount of assists. They aren't the right players for a 5, you lose too much threat.

He’s not HoR these days.
He is, the Director of Football oversees the recruitment department and the future development and direction the club is going on the footballing side. He will be less involved in the spade work of analysis and identification of players. But more time to be involved in the final say and negotiations to sign players. King has said in interview if we have an awkward agent I hand it over to Dean.

The final say is still very much a three way conversation between Austin (this is who we have indentified) Lampard (I’m happy with that and will have a conversation with them) and King (sets and signs off the financial side). Austin and King are the main negotiators. Lampard has a big say but has the least hands on involvement in signing players. Simply because his main role is to coach the players he has got.

He does at least look unfazed in these games, whereas MVE looks petrified.

Yes he's tidy in possession no argument, which has made him look relatively competent compared to certain others right now, but ESB is right in that he's pretty unspectacular. You'd want a LWB to carry far more attacking threat, but then I doubt we really planned to play that formation which just shows how much of a cluster fuck its been.

King would set the philosophy and Austin would have to implement it. Lampard's the coach - you can't expect him to be fully tuned into the European player pool we're shopping into.
What we've done is go down the Brighton, Brentford and a few others route of signing potential for "reasonable" PL money. What it hasn't taken into consideration is that those other sides are doing this with established better PL squads. We can't be looking at these youngsters we've brought in to be high-end PL quality straight away.
The thinking behind Pinnock and Awoniyi signings is reasonable but has to be tempered with that neither were likely to even make the bench for their former mid-table clubs this season.

At Premier League level I am not sure they are fine. To have JDS as our best player isn't a flex. It shows how under-par we have been.

As TomRad has said correctly, they offer very little in end product going forward, so a switch to 5atb makes even less sense.

It was presumably done to be defensively solid, which is the opposite of how it turned out in reality.

The alarming thing is how much time the club had to prepare its approach, and now that approach is being made up as we go along.

Derby’s points record is calling

We've still got some decent defenders, but I don't think our full backs are at the level. I would be using the Villa game to give more minutes to as many players as possible so we can find out who is stepping up or not.

I expect Villa to be looking at it as a pick me up themselves, I want to at least see some aggression and not necessarily in the tackle, but in committing players forward, shots at goal etc.

Exactly why we are in the current mess. What other “business” would be 100% owned and operated by one person who knows little about it?
The mess as in being a premier league cup for the first time in 25 years, owning the stadium for the first time in 21 years, and season tickets all sold out?

idiotic comment to make

That’s not how modern football works.

The theory is that if you allow managers to lead recruitment then they pick players for their specific needs rather than a long term vision.

Then when a manager changes he wants a whole new squad because the current lot aren’t his style.

We didn’t recruit heavily under Lampard until this summer because King was convinced we had a “top 6 deck”.
Which we did to be fair. We all laughed at him when he sat and did that extraordinary press conference after sacking Lampard, but it turned out he was right all along and we finished 5th that season (and should have been in the playoff final)

For me, in the situation we're in, we need to heed these wise words from the Beatles,

When I find myself in times of trouble mother Mary come to me,
4-5-1 out of possession,
In possesion 4-3-3.

Wise words indeed. But that requires 2 wingers who are prepared to track back and sit in and stay relatively disciplined when we don't have the ball. From what I've seen of Tchaouma he's not that type of player

disagree we had no midfield, Grob could stroll around at will
because he was on his own, the system meant that Onyeka ended up having to press the cb which meant that that as soon as Brighton moved the ball in to the midfield they had 3 people against just Grimes.

I think we need to look at moving away from grimes as a starter in all honesty .

Cant spend 25 million on a midfielder and have him sit on the bench , we need legs and aggression

But we also need 4231

Leeds played a 343 yesterday and battered Newcastle. Tanaka and Ampadu are big mobile midfielders that can get about the pitch. Grimes simply is not big or mobile enough to cause attacking teams problems. If it is tactical with Onyeka pressing then it's even more concerning that Frank thinks Grimes is fine on his own.

maybe we do but he can't really do anything if the pressing system vacates the midfield around him

We need to be rotating rudoni and hamer in the 8/10 role infront of yirneki and onyeka rbh , just my opinion
Think it'll come for Rudi. Taken up good scoring positions in just about every game which is a good sign imo, just needs to put one away. Needs to be in his natural position though.

All the pundits were talking about last night on MNF after the game was physicality. We just don't have that in our midfield at present. If that means bringing in Yiyrinki for Grimes then so be it, but we need to win that battle. We've been far too passive so far.

but their pressing system didn't leave any of their midfielders on their own against 3 people

this isn't a debate on the abilities of grimes which is a different question, it's that the pressing system was completely wrong for the opposition we were playing.

Our defensive shape was 5-4-1 but Onyeka was asked to push on and press the CBs alongside the striker. The issue is we then didn't move anyone else around to cover the gap so we ended up with only grimes in the midfield against the 2 Brighton midfielders and the 10 dropping in to there.

Grimes may not be of the level needed but we could have had Rodri in there and the issue is the same, 1 player vs 3 is a massive over load.

Or he dropped between Thomas and pinnock 3/4 times in the 2nd half leaving onyeka on his own
that's when we have the ball which is a completley different issue than the massive problem with our pressing scheme leaving him exposed

also why are people fixating on him dropping deep, he's done that all his career and has been great for us doing so

He drops deep then we loose it deep and he can't get out. We're not playing championship football anymore so he can't play how he has in the championship.
